24.01.2022 You may see a familiar face in today's Courier Mail. Our Year 5 student, Lyric McMillian and Mrs McMillian, were interviewed yesterday to find out how they felt about being able to see their family in Greater Sydney now that the border is set to reopen. We think it's safe to say that the McMillians, like so many of our SPS families, are excited and feeling blessed to be able to spend Christmas with their loved ones who live in NSW.

24.01.2022 Year 4 IST | This semester our Year 4 students have been looking through an entrepreneurial lens to examine ways to strengthen their communities. Last week the students presented their two minute pitches, demonstrating their ability to identify and articulate their community problem, their customer and their innovative solutions. Well done Year 4s and we look forward to seeing your ideas put into action in 2021!... Here is some short snippets of a few of the student pitches. You can read more about this IST project on our website here, https://www.stpauls.qld.edu.au/year-4s-strive-to-strengthe/.

23.01.2022 Our Year 9 students expanded their understanding of what it means to be a servant leader during their RAVE excursion to the Brisbane City Tabernacle and Synagogue on 29 July. The students learnt about the history of the two places of worship and listened to a 1915 organ being played. Read more about their experience in this e-news issue with a student article by Grace.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to our First Girls Basketball team who placed a fantastic 6th overall in last week’s Champion Basketball Schools Queensland tournament. Our girls were unseeded for the tournament and produced an absolute Cinderella story. Matched against highly fancied teams from basketball-specialist schools, our team performed incredibly well. Special congratulations to Georgia Woolley who led the entire competition in scoring, averaging 43 points per game (301 points total...) including one game where she scored 54. According to the team’s Manager, Mr Wong: I’m so proud of the girls. They dug deep and played their hearts out. To think that we only got into the tournament via a wildcard entry, with just 4 hours of preparation time, and to finish 6th in the State is just amazing. After she finishes Year 12 this year, Georgia is relocating to the USA to take up a basketball scholarship with a college. They will be lucky to have her. Well done, St Paul’s!

22.01.2022 Our Year 6 students held their annual Cookie Business Showcase today. These young entrepreneurs are in charge of the whole process from creating a business name and brand, applying for a 'loan' to buy ingredients, designing a cookie recipe and then marketing their sweet treats to their peers. The students also repay their 'loans' and use the profits to fund their end of year celebration marking their graduation from Junior School. All of our students had a blast selling and eating cookies today with their peers and Paul the Puma. Well done Year 6! We can't wait to see how you continue developing your entrepreneurial skills as you transition in Secondary School in 2021.

22.01.2022 It was great to see our year 10 students shine in their performance of Miranda and The Magic Sponge on 25 August 2020 in the Walker Centre Drama Rooms. In such a difficult year for the arts sector due to Covid-19 restrictions it was wonderful that our students had the opportunity to perform. You can read more about this performance in our latest newsletter here https://www.stpauls.qld.edu.au/newslett/2020-term-3-week-9/.

22.01.2022 Our Headmaster, Dr Paul Browning, was quoted extensively in yesterday’s Australian Financial Review discussing how COVID-19 had presented challenges for schools but also opportunities for innovation. St Paul’s School is described in the article as being at the ‘leading edge of what is achievable’ in terms of innovation in education. The newspaper refers to the School’s approach of providing students with complex problems and provocations, and then forming teams of students t...o solve those problems. Dr Browning is also quoted discussing how students have developed self-discipline and motivation, and have often bounced back strongly from the many disappointments the year has caused. The article is behind a paywall but can be accessed here: https://www.afr.com//covid-prompts-a-revolution-in-thinkin Thanks to the AFR’s Education Editor, Robert Bolton, for reaching out to St Paul’s for this article.

22.01.2022 As part of our Remembrance Day service we paused to observe one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Thank you to the St Paul’s Cadet Unit who formed the catafalque party as part of the service. Thanks also to our Wind Ensemble for playing the national anthem and Callum Heard, Year 11 for playing the Last Post. Well done to those students and staff who worked together to create a beautiful display which consists of small p...aintings of poppies created by students from Years 7-11. Lest We Forget.

21.01.2022 Thanks for watching Celebration of Achievement 2020! A massive thank you to all who were involved in the show’s production. If you missed tonight’s show, it’s available to watch anytime here: https://youtu.be/Wm_F2FOMFyo

21.01.2022 This morning our Year 12 students gathered together for one of the last times as a cohort, to share stories, memories and a good laugh over breakfast. Some of the students reflected on their time with their fellow classmates saying, It’s mornings like this that will make me miss my cohort and the further we go, the closer we get. In a challenging year for students everywhere due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was great to see our Year 12 Seniors enjoy their opportunity to relax with their classmates for one of the last times.

19.01.2022 The National Education Awards were conducted via live stream yesterday where St Paul’s School was a finalist in two categories; Junior School of the Year (non-government) and Secondary School of the Year (non-government). St Paul’s won excellence awards in both categories, recognising us as one of the top four independent Junior Schools and Secondary Schools in the country a fantastic achievement after such a disrupted and challenging year. This was the third consecutive year St Paul’s was a finalist in the Junior School of the Year category (which we won last year) but the first time we were a finalist for Secondary School of the Year. Congratulations to all members of the St Paul’s community on this well-deserved recognition. A wonderful accolade to finish the year with.

19.01.2022 Congratulations to the St Paul’s School Captains of 2021! At a special end of term assembly this morning, the 2021 School Captains were announced. This took place a little earlier than normal to allow for a proper handover between this year’s and next year’s Captains. Our 2020 Captains are finishing their schooling a little earlier than in past years due to the introduction of ATAR. We wish all of our Captains the best for next year.

18.01.2022 SPIS and Year 2 | As part of a blossoming friendship with the Year 2 classes, the St Paul's International School (SPIS) recently held round two of their presentation about festivals around the world. Thank you to Lee Li, Joy Raminai and Nunu Kwon who all did a wonderful job of presenting to the students and talking about special celebrations and other things that are unique to their home counties. The Year 2 students loved hearing about K-pop and Korean food from Nunu, the Sp...ring Festival from Lee and they learned a new game (6 stones) from Joy. This was a great experience for our students to continue building better connections with their peers and exploring what it means to be a global citizen.

18.01.2022 Last Friday evening was a little surreal, as Mr Paul Sullivan coached his final game of touch football for St Paul's School. Even though TAS sport finished a while ago, the St Paul's Pumas touch team has continued to play in South Pine Touch Association Womens' A grade, with Mr Sullivan and past students Riley Yorston and Brooke Carson coaching. The team included a mix or Year 10, 11 and 12 students. On Friday they played their Elimination final and while the result didn't ...go their way, they have put up an incredibly strong showing all year long. According to Mr Sullivan: "It's been great fun coaching several generations of fine young athletes over the years ; it has been a pleasure to meet, and teach our game to, lots of talented young people, and many of their parents. "Especially good when past Pumas keep playing touch when school finishes, and also when they come back to school to coach younger teams. Hope to still see many of you around the touch fields." Thank you for everything, Mr Sullivan!

18.01.2022 From today the St Paul's office will be closed for the Christmas holidays. We'll be open again on Monday, 4 January. We wish the entire St Paul's community a very Happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in 2021!

17.01.2022 We had ABC News visiting the School today to interview some of our Year 12s and the Headmaster about our upcoming online Celebration of Achievement. The story will likely go to air on Monday night (16 November) so be sure to tune in. Thanks to Lachlan, Gracie and Michaelyn for dusting off their uniforms and coming back into School even after they had finished exams. This year's Celebration of Achievement will be broadcast next Friday, 20 November, at 7pm and will feature lots of fun and surprising elements. Look out for some more previews next week.

17.01.2022 DLV PITCH NIGHT: Our RACQ Free2Go and Anti-Ordinary Teams had the pleasure of delivering their client pitches last night. Over the past 15 weeks, 20 students from St Paul’s School in Years 7-12 have been engaged by two companies to help them solve business improvement challenges as part of the second ever Design Led Venture at St Paul’s School. The two companies were RACQ’s Free2Go Program, which specialises supporting 16-24-year-old Queenslanders take on life’s big adventure...s, and Anti-Ordinary, a startup which has designed a beanie as safe as a helmet. The students formed two teams (to work on a client each) and went through a Design Thinking process that was borne out of the School’s Realms of Thinking teaching and learning model. The process included extensive client consultation, market research, ideation, prototyping, revisiting ideas, and solution finalisation. The process this moves into the St Paul’s Centre for Innovators and Entrepreneurs territory designing an implementation plan, sourcing costs and delivery schedules, and ultimately presenting ideas to both clients that potentially transform their entire businesses. Well done to our two DLV Teams and thank you to our clients, RACQ and Anti-Ordinary for the opportunity to work with you. A big thank-you also to our parents and staff for your support of the program.

17.01.2022 Yesterday, students in the Junior School dressed in red to support Year 5 student, Charlie White, who has started the Red for Dyslexia initiative. Charlie has been working with his teachers to organise a day to raise awareness of Dyslexia in our community. Charlie says ‘It’s important to help people understand the impact that Dyslexia has on people like me’. Well done Charlie! We look forward to seeing how our students continue to support each other and serve their community.

15.01.2022 Welcome to the second episode of SPS Insider! Having profiled School sport in their first episode, the Insider team this episode turns their focus to Music and, in particular, SPS Fest which launches today. Well done again to Deana Martinelli and Elka Van Eden (Year 12) who scripted, filmed and produced this episode, and got it finished during their holidays.... If any students in Year 10 or 11 are keen to be involved with the next episode, contact Deana or email [email protected] and we will pass your details on.

15.01.2022 There’s just one sleep until Christmas! Each of our Houses and the School choir have a special Christmas message for our community. Who’s going to a Christmas Eve service this evening?

14.01.2022 During Weeks 6 and 7, our Interact Committee reached out to the St Paul’s School community to donate old spectacles, sunglasses and glasses cases to support Rotary Australia’s ‘Donations’ in Kind’ program. A total of 319 glasses were donated and handed over to Rotary Pine Rivers by Sameel Deoji, Taylor Trost and Mrs Jenny Svehla last week. The glasses will be graded, and re-grinded if necessary, by opticians before being given out to those in need in developing countries. We are proud of the St Paul's School Interact team and their continuing display of servant leadership in our community.

14.01.2022 Our Service Learning team is determined to reduce our community’s environmental impact by implementing a number of waste management initiatives around the School. Earlier this year, students placed 10 blue recycling bins around the School and they have recently decorated another 3 organic waste bins which will be positioned around the school in the coming weeks. These new bins will help reduce the amount of organic waste going into the standard litter collection bins and will also be used to collect coffee grinds from Sippers and green waste collected by ground staff. These initiatives have been a great opportunity for students to develop a heart for servant leadership and get involved in projects that serve our community well.

12.01.2022 Our Early Learning Centre got into the Christmas spirit late in the term by partnering with Encircle Ltd., a neighbourhood centre in Lawnton. The ELC donated 4 hampers of festive treats to families in need along with a number of handmade cards to elderly citzens who might be doing it tough in our local community. Great work, ELC!

11.01.2022 There's still time to visit the candy bar. Get your snacks and popcorn ready, the Celebration of Achievement Starts in 1 hour! Here is the viewing link in case you missed it. https://youtu.be/Wm_F2FOMFyo.

11.01.2022 Our SPS Community continues to show just how resilient and supportive they can be. The Moon Festival is a Chinese Tradition which began as a thank you to the Autumn moon for the harvest, and is now often used to celebrate family reunions. While our International students weren’t able to travel home to celebrate with their families as they normally would, they made sure to celebrate with their SPS Families! Our International Students held their own Moon Festival celebrations during the school holidays by decorating the International School with paper lanterns they had made, and baking their own Moon Cakes and festive food to share with each other.

10.01.2022 We are proud to have many talented musicians at SPS including Callum Heard, Year 11 who played the Last Post for our Remembrance Day service today. Here is a video from the service.

08.01.2022 Earlier this term the Year 9 History students engaged in a World War One unit where they were given printed artefacts to represent an actual Australian who fought in WW1. These artefacts were the starting point of a Historical Inquiry into the personal story, and the meaning behind the artefacts they were given. Students were then encouraged to delve into their research and find a topic that intrigued them, to then create a museum exhibit to be displayed in the ‘trenches’ on ...the school grounds. Many incredible exhibits were made - with posters depicting the role of WW1 photographers (seen here with Liana, right) through to the creation of the desk and contents of Gallipoli senior officer General Sir Henry George Chauvel (seen here with Brandy, left). This was a great opportunity for students to take a step back in time and find an innovative way to display their research so that future students can learn from their studies.

08.01.2022 We hope that you enjoyed this year's Celebration of Achievement! We certainly had a lot of fun making it. Here is the opening Microsoft Teams Call segment, available for you to watch at anytime. If you haven't already, you can still download a copy of the program by visiting our website. https://www.stpauls.qld.edu.au/celebration-of-achievement-/

07.01.2022 SHARE THE DIGNITY | A big thank you to the many staff, students and families that dropped off toiletries and bags for the 2020 Share the Dignity - It's In The Bag collection. This morning we were able to drop off over 70 very generously packed bags of supplies for women in need. A special thank you also to the students who took the time to write notes of affirmation and encouragement to place inside each of the bags. We are very proud of your service to our community and we look forward to seeing how your heart for servant leadership continues to develop.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to St Paul's twins, Max and Emily Hering (Year 7) who recently competed in the Australian Taekwondo QLD State Tournament with great success. Max and Emily participated in both individual events and pairs events with each other . Overall, Max won 3 Gold Medals and Emily won Gold, Silver and Bronze. ... What an amazing achievement!

06.01.2022 If you open today’s Courier Mail you’ll see a number of our Year 2 students! The students have drawn pictures and written reflections about what they want for Christmas. The responses are quite moving - particularly the desire to be reunited with family who live in different States or overseas. Thank you to our Year 2 students for their compassion shown towards their family and society more broadly.

06.01.2022 In a Design Thinking session, our Pre-Prep students are encouraged to think innovatively about shapes, movement and the effect that force has on an object. On Tuesday 8 September, our students were asked to identify the shapes that make up familiar objects and the direction they would move if pushed or pulled.

04.01.2022 Our Year 3 students have been collaborating with Wendy Rix (Wensart) over the past few weeks to create a large Acknowledgement of Country sign to display in the Junior School. The students spent time learning about indigenous culture and art this term including designing their own rock paintings to place in the gardens around their classrooms. This has been a great experience for our students to continue developing their global citizenship.

01.01.2022 We had the Courier Mail visit the School today to speak with some of our Prep and Year 6 students about this year's online Celebration of Achievement. The students were very excited to be part of the photo shoot (the popcorn was very popular!) and are looking forward to seeing themselves next Friday at 7pm where they feature in the special show. This story is scheduled to appear in Monday's newspaper so keep your eyes out for what should be a very cute photo.
