25.01.2022 Sabbath The mind that comes to rest is tended In ways that it cannot intend: Is borne, preserved, and comprehended... By what it cannot comprehend. Your Sabbath, Lord, thus keeps us by Your will, not ours. And it is fit Our only choice should be to die Into that rest, or out of it. Wendell Berry (born 1934) Poet, farmer, environmentalist. Even poppies need to rest :)
24.01.2022 Blessing for a new beginning In out-of-the-way places of the heart, Where your thoughts never think to wander This beginning has been quietly forming, ... Waiting until you were ready to emerge. Awaken to your spirit of adventure; Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk; Soon you will be home in a new rhythm For your soul senses the world that awaits you. John O’Donohue (Verses 1 and 6 of Blessing for a new beginning) It's one small step for... " whatever this bird is....

23.01.2022 "Purple is associated spirituality, the sacred, higher self, passion, third eye, fulfilment, and vitality. Purple helps one to align oneself with the whole of the universe. The colour purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic. The colour purple has a variety of effects on the mind and bod...y, including uplifting spirits, calming the mind and nerves, enhancing the sacred, creating feelings of spirituality, increasing nurturing tendencies and sensitivity, and encouraging imagination and creativity." 22.01.2022 For I tell you this: one loving, blind desire for God alone is more valuable in itself, more pleasing to God and to the saints, more beneficial to your own growth, and more helpful to your friends, both living and dead, than anything else you could do. Anonymous, The Cloud of Unknowing A catspaw, newly emerged at Wireless Hill Park; first of many hopefully.
22.01.2022 The universe conjured up for us by our senses is not the Universe. We know that the ears of the bat, the eyes of the bee, the nose of the dog, the sensitivity of the bird to magnetic fields ... shape a perception of the world wholly different from our own, yet no more or less true. Don Paterson And we know that this spider orchid is saying "Ta da :)
22.01.2022 A prayer so delicate it's almost just a breath God Help us to live slowly To move simply... To look softly To allow emptiness To let the heart create for us. Michael Leunig

21.01.2022 The Feast of Christ the King Father Rod challenges the interpretation of this week’s gospel as being about individual/ personal sin and righteousness, as being about the behaviour of nations. https://www.facebook.com/anggos/videos/2784914931829039... I suggest you listen to the sermon without watching, as the sound is out of synch with the vision.

20.01.2022 Sweep Clean the Rooms of Our Heart A Year with Thomas Merton In recent times the pandemic has affected us all. Some people expressed how it mentally affected th...em, others shared their joy for the quiet life. Most of us would have experienced a mixture of experiences. The writings and spirit of Thomas Merton can be a guide to shine light on the multiple rooms and ways of our mind, heart and soul. The aim of this reading group is to grow deeper into our personal spirituality, into deepened inner freedom. The group is suitable for everyone who has been put on a spiritual journey, and wants to further explore the dialogue between our inner and outer Source. Following Mertons example, we will practice self-reflection by ways of journal writing, and creative journaling. When: Once a month, for a year, on Thursday mornings from 9-11 am, in Beaconsfield. In case of renewed social restrictions, we will continue via Zoom. Costs: donation please send a PM if you are interested

19.01.2022 May today you have peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be confident knowing you are a child of God.... Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. Saint Theresa's Prayer A an azalea exactly where it is meant to be (lucky for me, in my courtyard)
18.01.2022 Ever in my life have I sought thee with my songs. It is they who led me from door to door, and with them I have felt about me, searching and touching my world. It was my songs that taught me all the lessons I ever learnt; they showed me the secret paths, they brought before my sight many a star on the horizon of my heart. Rabrindranath Tagore... 18.01.2022 Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting: The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star, Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar: Not in entire forgetfulness,... And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come From God, who is our home: Heaven lies about us in our infancy! Wordsworth - Intimations of Immortality Iris, youngest member of our congregation - heaven lies about her in her infancy
17.01.2022 May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow, May the soft winds freshen your spirit, May the sunshine brighten your heart, May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you And may God enfold you in the mantle of his love.... (Traditional Gaelic blessing) See more

16.01.2022 "Somewhere out in the infinite distance lay the spring, at least in Gods mind, like the babies that are not yet conceived in the mothers womb." From Fish can sing by Halldor Laxness Spring is not so far away in WA; we are getting bits of it swirling in and reminding us that warmth is on its way. This sentence is by the Icelandic author, and I imagine it must seem like infinite distance up there. Couldnt resist sharing the imagery.... Love the glow-in-the-dark translucence of these petals
16.01.2022 All that is sweet, delightful and amiable in this world, in the serenity of the air, the fineness of the seasons, the joy of light, the melody of sounds, the beauty of colours, the fragrance of smells .... is nothing else but heaven breaking through the veil of this world, manifesting itself in such a degree and darting forth in such variety so much of its own nature. William Law, English mystic 1686-1761 Heaven breaking through in Orkney
15.01.2022 Maybe - Mary Oliver Sweet Jesus, talking his melancholy madness, stood up in the boat ... and the sea lay down, silky and sorry. So everybody was saved that night. But you know how it is when something different crosses the threshold the uncles mutter together, the women walk away, the young brother begins to sharpen his knife. Nobody knows what the soul is. It comes and goes like the wind over the water sometimes, for days, you don't think of it. Maybe, after the sermon, after the multitude was fed, one or two of them felt the soul slip forth like a tremor of pure sunlight before exhaustion, that wants to swallow everything, gripped their bones and left them miserable and sleepy, as they are now, forgetting how the wind tore at the sails before he rose and talked to it tender and luminous and demanding as he always was a thousand times more frightening than the killer sea. Part of an icon of Jesus walking on water.

15.01.2022 Our life is a faint tracing on the surface of mystery, like the idle, curved tunnels of leaf miners on the face of a leaf. We must somehow take a wider view, look at the whole landscape, really see it, and describe what's going on here. Then we can at least wail the right question into the swaddling band of darkness, or, if it comes to that, choir the proper praise. Annie Dillard

14.01.2022 Thank you to Peter Smith who found the book "Gifts with no Giver", poems by Nirmala on the internet. According to an entry on the net she is a spiritual teacher in the Advaita tradition. There are a number of ways to read the poem, all of which are valid - the addressee is my lost self (found at the centre referred to in yesterdays lines), the Great Mystery some call God, a lover, a much-loved friend. The language of the mystic and that of the lover is equally intense, tend...er, vibrant and numinous. your hand is always in mine your whispered endearments are my constant companion you have never turned your face from me no matter how many times I have turned from you now I vow undying love I meet you in the secret places I used to hide from you in I hold you with tenderness I used to reserve for my pain I would give you my life and my breath in an instant for you are my true love the one with no form the one who has never been anywhere, but right here The image is one of my favourite sculptures at the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo.
13.01.2022 A Future Not Our Own This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted knowing that they hold future promise.... We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. Oscar Romero The poppies are out again - an annual gorgeous display. Think they planted themselves though - we didnt really have to do very much!

12.01.2022 WONDER MOMENTS The actual sense of wonder does not have to be grand; maybe one kangaroo... outlined above the dunes at sundown; a few seconds of melody from Grieg or Haydn; a bare wintering tree lifting arms to the moonlight; a phrase from a psalm not heard for some time. Little glimpses of the kingdom can be born in a moment, unexpected as a Christ, unearned as grace bud-bursts of wonder-praise tingling in one's being and focusing on the Mystery greater than the stars! (From More Australian Psalms by Bruce D. Prewer) My yearly fascination with all the Variations on a Theme of Poppy. First one is a double which I havent seen before - black design at the centre of the main part can be seen in the petal behind; black pollen. The second one, pink, with white centre and yellow pollen. Tears of joy from the mornings delighting. And the bees are busy mixing up all the genes for next years crop.
11.01.2022 Your Presence like treasure hidden in a field. Your Glory like gold... buried on the pathway of every moment. Your Wisdom like the finest oil waiting to be pressed from the human heart from every nation from every people from every child. Your Wisdom, O God, to show us the way. 06.01.2022 Timely words from a heroic American I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... 06.01.2022 As I begin this day, dear Lord, and I plug in and switch on my kettle, remind me that you are the source of all energy, all life, all connectedness. Let me make contact with my little universe.... As the steam rises from the spout, may my prayers rise to you. As the tea brew, may I rest and reflect in you. As I drink may your spirit refresh me. Bless all those who share the pot with me. (Not sure where this little down-to-earth prayer comes from)
06.01.2022 I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz, or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off. I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul.... I love you as the plant that never blooms but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers; thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance, risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body. I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; so I love you because I know no other way than this: where I does not exist, nor you, so close that your hand on my chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep. Pablo Neruda

05.01.2022 I am being driven forward Into an unknown land. The pass grows steeper, The air colder and sharper. A wind from my unknown goal... Stirs the strings Of expectation. Still the question: Shall I ever get there? There where life resounds, A clear pure note In the silence. -- Dag Hammarskjöld, Markings --
04.01.2022 Job keeper is a modern day parable of the Kingdom. We have, in the past individualised profits and socialised losses. The Jesus vision for the world is differen...t. The last shall be first and the first shall be last. To live in an economy of Justice we have to change the way we see the world. We humans are programmed, born with a sense of fairness, but fairness is not justice. It's as if we have to be born again with different programming. The Kingdom, Jesus' vision for the world, is "Just" not "fair". Fr Rod See more

03.01.2022 Finding the centre Our culture has made a virtue of living only as extroverts. We have discouraged the inner journey, the quest for a centre. So we lost our centre and have to find it again. Anais Nin Yesterday I discovered this lovely flower on a succulent Ive heard called pig-face, though I cant think why. Mesembryanthemum is its family name.
03.01.2022 We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things? Dietrich Bonhoeffer Thanks for this "ordinary, small gift" Found a pupa of a cabbage butterfly and kept it for a few days protected in a bottle. It became a butterfly on Saturday and here it is newly hatched (they obviously get paler as they mature). Even though they are in plague proportions this year, I let it fly off.

02.01.2022 Within each of us lies a power greater than anything we will ever have to face. Sometimes it reveals itself as a great force at other times as a deep, unfolding stillness. For centuries it’s been described as a burning fire. Yet this power never imposes itself. Each heart decides to its presence - and that decision sets the course for everything that follows. Paula D’arcy This is one of the roses around the archway leading into the amphitheatre (I thought the pink edges captured to some extent the idea of power greater than we are aware of). Note the two aphids posing shamelessly for selfies.
02.01.2022 The Beginning of Wisdom - Denise Levertov (1923-1997) You have brought me so far. I know so much. Names, verbs, images. My mind... overflows, a drawer that cant close. Unscathed among the tortured. Ignorant parchment uninscribed, light strokes only, where a scribe tried out a pen. I am so small, a speck of dust moving across the huge world. The world a speck of dust in the universe. Are you holding the universe? You hold onto my smallness. How do you grasp it, how does it not slip away? I know so little. You have brought me so far. Seed pods aglow!

01.01.2022 A leaf fluttered in through the window this morning, as if supported by the rays of the sun, a bird settled on the fire escape, joy accompanied me as I walked. Anais Nin The first image is of a sundew flower, the sticky leaves which are shown in the second. The sticky leaves attract and trap tiny insects which provide a source of nitrogen to the plant.
