25.01.2022 In Mathematics, Year 5 were presented with a challenging launch task. They were only given 20 straws to construct as many 3D objects as possible. We were having so much, Mrs Boulis had to see what was going on! #launchtasks ... #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool #sydneycatholicschools See more
24.01.2022 At St Pius, we love recycling materials to be used in the classroom and then turning them into something new and exciting. Our love of STEM has grown as we have learnt to use materials that would often be thrown out. We have learnt to use newspaper in different ways and have also learnt new skills and ways to make it stronger. The Nguyen family were given a tricky challenge to make a structure using newspaper that was the same height as Adam. Here, the planning and designing ...stage is so important because a well designed and thought out plan can help ensure that it is strong. Sometimes when building, changes need to be made based on the testing that happens throughout the process. The Nguyen family thought that the challenge was a fun one but did run into a few problems along the way as noted by Adam (Year 2). Well done to the Nguyen family for such a creative response to your challenge this week. We are excited to see what the Naidoo family create next week for the 'STEM Family Challenge'! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
23.01.2022 The second family to participate in the STEM Family Challenge this week was the 'Low Family'. Their challenge was to build a fort using newspaper and masking tape. They began the process by making triangles out of newspaper as they thought this would be a great foundation for their fort. This was a labour intensive job as they were rolling newspaper into long tubes that were then connected to each other. A key component of STEM is to continually test and adapt the design as... many factors can contribute to the success of the structure. The Low family were a perfect example of this, as their original design needed to be changed and altered many times, as aspects of their structure didn't work. Their teamwork, persistence and hard work saw them successfully complete the project with a huge mess but smiles on all their faces. Aleister (Year 3) was asked what the best part of the challenge was, he said " I enjoyed building the structure with my family and also the challenge because it was hard". Oliver (Year 5) said when asked what he would change next time, that "Next time I would make the newspaper rolls thicker so they are stronger". Thank you to the Low Family for your commitment, hard work and for 'thinking outside the box' with your design. You most certainly got our school community very excited at Morning Assembly! Next week we welcome the 'Sartor Family' who will be solving another exciting challenge! Good luck to the Sartors! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool

16.01.2022 Over the last two weeks, we have seen our littlest members of our school community participate in the STEM Family Challenge. It is often mistaken that science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are subjects for the older children-however, it's our smallest children who equally benefit from a high quality STEM program. STEM taps into all ages, ability groups and learning styles as it ignites a spark of curiosity, use of imagination and a solution to a problem that is en...tirely unique. The West family tackled our problem of creating This week we had the 'West family' show us what they could achieve with only paddle pop sticks and masking tape. Their challenge was to build a bridge of any design. Jacob was busy helping his family design their structure which is an important part of the process. Here, the ideas of the family members come together to create their final design. Jacob (Kindy) shared his family's page in the learning journal with his class alongside his creation. He spoke about his family's design process as well as the problems that they faced and any changes he would make for next time. Just like Ronin from last week, he was so proud to share his learning with the class. Well done to the West family for a terrific solution to your challenge! We look forward to the Nguyen family who will attempt St Pius' STEM Family Challenge. #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool

14.01.2022 Fathers Day is a day where we celebrate how lucky we are to have such great fathers and father figures in our lives. Without these great men in our lives, we would not be where we are today. Thank you for everything you do for us. We love you very much! We also love a good dad joke: My friend Jack claims that he can communicate with vegetables.... 14.01.2022 The Plaza/Stewart family's challenge this week was to design and create something that would not only float in the water but also hold a handful of coins! The only resources they could use were foil, straws and tape. This was a challenge in itself as they needed to think of a design that was waterproof and keep the coins dry. STEM challenges see families bring their ideas and embrace the endless possibilities to their design. Working with others can be challenging as there ar...e often a lot of ideas being discussed-finding and sticking to the one solution is something that many find hard. The Plaza/Stewart family worked hard together to ensure that their solution fitted the brief and was also very practical. Well done Skye (year 3) and Cassidy (Year 5) for leading your family through the STEM Family Challenge this week! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool

14.01.2022 This week it was the Sartor family's turn to participate in the STEM Family Challenge. Their challenge was to design and create a structure that was the same height as Jimmy in Year 1- only using newspaper and masking tape. The Sartor's successfully created a tower which they named 'Sydney Sartor Tower' by creating long tubes out of the newspaper which they connected with the masking tape. This ensured that the tower had height, but proved to be challenging when connecting al...l the tubes together. Jimmy (Year 1) said that he would change how tight he made each newspaper roll next time as he thought the rolls were harder to connect this way. The STEM Family Challenge aims to bring families together to problem solve and create. St Pius understands how busy our families are and appreciate how much time, effort, patience and hard work goes into completing the challenges each week. Thank you to the Sartor family for their creative design and successful solution. Next week the Shockair family will be beginning their STEM journey by participating in a new and exciting challenge. #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
14.01.2022 It has been so wonderful for our school to share our love of STEM with our families this year. We have seen our children thrive in learning experiences that cater for a range of thinking styles and we also enjoy seeing them take on challenges with positivity and excitement. This week, the O'Cleirigh family had the challenge of building something that would keep an egg safe after being dropped from the height of 1metre. There is a lot to consider with this challenge as you nee...d to be mindful of the force that the egg hits the ground. The O'Cleirigh family were not given many resources, so therefore, needed to put their heads together to think of a practical solution. Ronin (Kindy) was so proud sharing his final solution with his class and spoke about the process his family took when solving the challenge. He noted that they didn't have much time because anything STEM related needed to be done when his baby sister was asleep! Thank you to the O'Cleirigh family for showing how with teamwork, anything can be achieved! We welcome the West family who is up for the next 'St Pius STEM Family Challenge'! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
13.01.2022 Kindy were so excited to get back to learning in the classroom yesterday! We began our exploration of area and worked super hard to cover the surface of objects with informal units. 12.01.2022 This week, we welcomed Mr Scott Hansen from Sydney Catholic Schools to teach Year Five an Year Six how to code Sphero Bolts. Year 5 and Year 6 were challenged to code their Sphero to make a perfect square. We found out that the acceleration of the Sphero and the friction of different surfaces heavily impacts on making a perfect square. Thank you for your amazing lesson Mr Hansen!... #stpiusprimaryschool #sydneycatholicschools #science #spherobolt

12.01.2022 St Pius' had our very first whole school 'STEM Family Challenge'. The first family to participate were the Cusacks whose challenge it was to create a structure out of straws and masking tape. They had complete control of their design, however needed to ensure that it could hold the weight of a tennis ball! They had a blast designing and making the solution to this challenge and worked very hard as a team to make their structure. Ava (Year 3) said the best part of the challeng...e was "building the top of the tower and coming up with the ideas on the way". This is an important aspect about STEM, as the original design isn't always the final one. Changes are made along the way and are adapted accordingly. Cooper (Kindy) thought that next time they could "followed the base pattern all the way to the top". A huge thank you to the Cusack family for being the first family to complete the challenge. We love your hard work and think you problem solve so well together. Next week, the 'Low Family' will be solving a brand new challenge. Good luck to the Low Family! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool

10.01.2022 It was the Marcon family's turn to take on the 'St Pius Family Challenge' this week. They were given the challenge where they needed to build a water slide using only paddle pop sticks, foil and a tube. This challenge tested the family's creativity, as a water slide sounds simple to design and make, however it not only needs to look interesting, but also be functional in it's design and be strong enough to hold people and water . The Marcon family were successful in their sol...ution and they were able to create a waterslide that nailed the brief. The family explained that the challenge required all members to listen to each other's ideas which at times can be a challenge in itself! Collaboration is vital in the STEM process as there are many possible solutions to a challenge and each member is encouraged to participate and contribute to the 'brainstorming stage'. Allegra in Year 2 said that "the best part of the challenge was working together with her family" to problem solve. Well done to the Marcon family for listening to each other's ideas and creating a very functional solution. Good luck to the Plaza-Stewart family next week who are ready to take on the next challenge! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
10.01.2022 Today, Year 5 estimated and measured the perimeter of the block surrounding the school. We used digital trundle wheels and our devices to record lengths and calculated the total perimeter. 10.01.2022 This week, it was the Shockair family's turn to solve the new challenge: To build something out of foil and newspaper that could hold MAB equipment while floating in water. There were a few elements that they needed to consider here-the weight of the MAB equipment as well as ensuring that the blocks would stay dry while in the water. The Shockair's successful solution was carefully designed and very well made to ensure that the equipment was kept dry and it stayed afloat in ...the water. The STEM process highlights the importance of not only designing a unique solution, but also desiging and making a practical one that fits the criteria. Well done to the Shockair family on a very well designed solution to this week's challenge. Next week, it will be the Bekes family's turn to attempt their new and challenge. Good luck to the Bekes family! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool

07.01.2022 Remembrance Day Commemoration Assembly. At St Pius’ each class presented their own wreath in remembrance of the fallen soldiers. Lest we forget. ~ In Flanders fields the poppies blow... Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. 06.01.2022 This week, Year 5 used Beebots for Mathematics and Science. The students were challenged to code the Beebot, design and build a maze that would allow the bot to proceed through without touching. Then the students made observations on a Beebots movements on different surfaces such as carpet, polished wood and floorboards. We learnt that friction from carpet really affects the Beebots ability to make turns.... Year 5 certainly proved that learning can Bee fun! #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool #Beebots #year5 #maths #STEM

03.01.2022 In small groups, Year 5 recently completed their planets assignment. Students had to choose a planet in our solar system, research historical, mathematical, geographic information about their planet and complete a compare and contrast to Earth. They were tasked to create a Google site and some even made a diorama for their planet! Fantastic job Year 5, your assignments were sun-sational!... #planets #solarsystem #assignment #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
03.01.2022 The Bekes family this week were given a challenge with only two resources to use-these being spaghetti and blu tak! As many great STEM learners do, Tilly and Maddie began their process by researching possible building frames that could support their structure. They needed a design that would be stable enough to support an entire structure. Spaghetti is delicious to eat, but tricky to work with because it is so delicate and fragile and using blu tak to connect the spaghetti t...ogether was always going to be challenging. This was something that the Bekes family learnt as they designed and made one structure but it collapsed during their hard earned lunch break. This meant they needed to readjust their design and make changes to their original plans. During a STEM challenge, the 'trialling' and 'adapting' stages are very important in the process because when a solution is trialled, it needs to pass certain milestones to ensure it is on the right track. If it doesn't pass the trialling stage, changes need to then be made to either the design or resources. Thank you to the Bekes family for your hard work preparing the challenge, your design process and for the huge amount of creativity shown during the week. Next week we welcome the 'Marcon Family' as the next participants in 'The St Pius STEM Family Challenge'. Good luck! #stem #stemchallenge #familytime #learningtime #strongstructure #trialanderror #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #stpiuscatholicprimaryschool
