20.01.2022 Dear Friends, Today we celebrate the life of St Aidan om Iona and Bishop of Lindisfarne. (d 651) His first missionary work was in Northumbria, where he was sent, at the request of King Oswald, to strengthen the church there. Following his consecration as a Bishop he established his base on the Island of Lindisfarne. He made many journeys on the mainland to strengthen churches and establish missionary outposts. Aidan’s Christian practice was of the Celtic Church. He carefully ...trained a group of 12 English boys to be future leaders in the Church, amongst them was St Chad. His asceticism and gentleness won rapid success for his mission. Everlasting God, whose servant Aidan carried the good news of your Son to the people of Northumbria: grant that we who commemorate his service may know the hope of the gospel in our hearts and manifest its light in all our ways; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 14.01.2022 Today the Australian Church remembers the life and work of John Oliver Feetham, 18731947. Feetham was bishop of North Queensland from 1913 to 1947. His episcopate spanned crucial years in the development of North Queensland. In both world wars he was a vigorous exponent and supporter of the allied cause. In fighting for what he believed, in church and state, there could be no half measures, and like many other public figures, he was a pro-conscriptionist in 1916 and 1917. He... was favourable to the Labor Party at first, but by the end of the 1920s was critical of it. Feetham contributed much to the maintenance and vivifying of the Bush Brotherhood, and to the spread of religion in the outback. He inspired the Brothers to see country people as epitomizing the virtues of an Australian character partly formed by the bush itself. The success of his appeals for financial support from the pastoral companies indicates the influence of this outlook. He left a permanent imprint on the churchmanship of the diocese. As a priest, he had been at loggerheads with the evangelical Archbishop Wright of Sydney, and under Feetham's guidance the diocese of North Queensland became one of the most uniformly catholic in Australia. Far from being 'high and dry', the North Queensland Church was very much alive. He infected others with his own enthusiasm, and his personality, into which his Christianity was fully integrated, was colourful, attractive and eccentric. His outstanding achievement was the foundation of schools. They were primarily 'the bishop's schools', and he devoted tremendous effort to them, leaving a powerful imprint on them: All Souls and St Gabriel's, Charters Towers, and St Anne's, Townsville, are flourishing still, while St Mary's, Herberton, closed in 1966. His aim was to bring up the children of North Queensland in the best Imperial and church traditions. The patriotism of past and present pupils during World War II reflected his success'Church and Empire' were his watchwords. He believed in the Anglican Church and in the British race which produced it, and despite post-war changes the vitality of this ethos remains: the Church identified with him. It is probably this personal influence for which he is most remembered. by Alison Moore This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 8, (MUP), 1981 Feetham was obviously a product of his time, but the Australian Church has a great debt to hi9m and his work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ9j3e8_yQc

09.01.2022 Dear Friends in Christ, Today is The Feast Day for St Matthew, Apostle evangelist, and Martyr. According to Matthew 9.9 he was a tax collector, called by Jesus from his office to follow Him.... He was a Jew and is traditionally regarded as the author of the Gospel bearing his name. Little is known of him, but he is believed to have conducted his ministry amongst the Jews. Traditions vary and it is not known whether he died a natural death or was martyred. Almighty God, who through your Son Jesus Christ Called Matthew from the selfish pursuit of gain, To become an apostle and evangelist: Free us from all greed and love of riches So that we may follow the steps of Jesus in the way of self- giving love; This we ask through the same, Jesus Christ our Lord.

09.01.2022 Here is another offering from Kay: Galatians 3:1-5 Matthew Henry, in his vast commentary, observes that Paul is addressing those who, even though declaring faith in Christ, continue to seek worth and salvation by works. That is, by their obedience to religious laws and actions of moral value. It is a sharp rebuke indeed.... Paul makes no apology for the fact that it is not enough to say we believe or to talk as though we do. We are exhorted to walk in obedience, yielded to God’s will made known through Holy Spirit to our hearts. Our belief in God affects and effects the whole of our being and our life. F.B. Meyer states, Faith had underlain the commencement of their Christian life.Faith had been the means, too, of Abraham’s acceptance with God.Simple faith was the only condition that he had fulfilled By following the law, the Jews (and us) maintain our relationship with God. But by believing God in simple faith we are making an ongoing declaration of living in a relationship with God, present tense, current and active. This reminded me of this sweet yet simple chorus. The authors and the date of its writing are unknown. Into Thy presence, we come. Not by the works we have done, But by Thy grace and Thy grace alone, Into thy presence, we come. 08.01.2022 As we continue through the Covid 19 Pandemic I am finding more and more people are finding it all getting a bit hard; here are some prayers: Keep us, good Lord,... under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us to love our neighbour, and to care for those in need as if we were caring for you. In this time of anxiety, give us strength to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick, and to assure the isolated of our love, and your love, for your name’s sake. Amen. God of compassion, be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation. In their loneliness, be their consolation; in their anxiety, be their hope; in their darkness, be their light; through him who suffered alone on the cross, but reigns with you in glory, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

06.01.2022 We have a week full of commemorations, today Hidegaard of Bingen -abbess and spiritual writer d.1179. Here is a piece Kay prepared: Hildegaard of Bingen... A twelfth-century woman, mystic, and writer of beautiful music, poetry, contemplative insights, and theological discussion, Hlidegaard achieved so much in increasing understanding in Christian spirituality and still does today. For her, the mystical and spiritual life was a constancy of grace. That is, it is in our choices of everyday life that the experience of the incarnation of God deepens in ourselves, and within the church. Our lives, in relationship with God, should be expressive and experiential. Her story is a very interesting one and her music has been described as ‘heavenly’. ______ Most glorious and holy God, whose servant Hildegard, strong in the faith, was caught up in the vision of your heavenly courts: by the breath of your Spirit open our eyes to glimpse your glory and our lips to sing your praises with all the angels; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

06.01.2022 Speak, Lord, in the stillness, While I wait for thee; Hushed my heart will listen... In expectancy. Speak, O blessed Master, In this quiet hour, Let me see thy face, Lord, Feel thy touch of power. For the words thou speakest They are life indeed; Living Bread from heaven, Now my spirit feed. (E. May Grimes Crawford, 1864-1927) And here is a hymn to go with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7IEwZQqh2o

02.01.2022 ** LATEST ANNOUNCEMENT ** ** PLEASE SHARE ** Dear Friends... Hope you are well and enjoying the warm weather. Just a quick mid-week update following the recent easing of COVID19 restrictions. I have just measured the Cathedral and we can easily sit 108 congregants (based on the current rules and slightly being conservative too). Therefore, you do not have to go through the process of booking for this Sunday onwards. All you have to do is attend church, either 8am or 10am, register your name and contact details just like you would do at a café or restaurant. Please also be informed that we are not continuing on with the 5pm Said Eucharist on Sundays as we added the additional service primarily to accommodate more worshippers. However, this may change in 2021. What we are doing now and need to continue on : Please keep to 1.5 metres between individual congregants, and other individuals or domestic couple or family groups. If you see an X on a pew or chair, you can sit there. Sanitize before entering the Cathedral and before leaving the Cathedral. Please a wear a masks at all times unless you are given an exemption by an authorized individual e.g. doctor. Communion in one kind only. Please follow the direction of the ushers. After each service all areas must be sanitized with appropriate form completed. What is NEW and may change as we progress further : Singing is allowed but you must wear a mask. We will only resume singing as a congregation from 20th Dec (Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols) onwards. Choir and celebrant are allowed to sing without masks on but must be 2 meters apart and 5 meters from the congregants. Doors, windows and other entrances should be open to allow maximum circulation of air. We are allowed to have a cuppa afterwards but we will only resume this hopefully from 6th Dec 2020 onwards. Most likely we will have it outside either near the main entrance of the Cathedral or at the side. We are still trying to work this out and of course more details will come out soon. Since we are unable to use the Holy Water stoop. We are planning to reinstate the liturgical practice of sprinkling with holy water or "asperges" as a reminder of baptism. The term comes from the Latin version of Ps 51, "Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop." It will be done as a preparatory ceremony before the Eucharist, with the altar, clergy, and people all sprinkled with holy water. An aspergillum is used for sprinkling the holy water. Once again, thank you so much for being agile and for fully cooperating with all these changes. Please pass this message around especially to all those who are not on any electronic media. If you need more information, please contact Fr Martin, your Asst. Curate. Prayers from your Cathedral

01.01.2022 VP Day today. We pray for peace and justice for all

01.01.2022 9 years ago today we enthroned a Bishop. (I can personally think of at least one person who would've killed to be able to fall back on a COVID-safe 4sq metre rule as he tried to squeeze in all +GW's last minute guests... :) ) Happy Anniversary!

01.01.2022 Letter from our Bishop announcing the Appointment of Fr Michael O’Brien as our new rector effective from Jan 29th next year. Please uphold Fr Michael and Kerryn as they prepare to come to the Diocese.
