12.01.2022 Did you know? The Jury Fountain in the Big Quad was erected in 1919/1920 following the passing of George Rischbieth Jury (old scholar 1909-1913) who died serving in France during WWI. He was 21 years of age. In his Will, GR Jury had left funds requesting that a drinking fountain be erected in memory of his beloved Headmaster, Henry Girdlestone. On the inside of the fountain the inscription reads:... THIS FOUNTAIN IS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE LONG AND FAITHFUL SERVICES OF CANON HENRY GIRDLESTONE MA OXON HEADMASTER OF THE SCHOOL 1894 TO 1915. IT IS THE WISH OF THE COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS THAT THE FOUNTAIN SHOULD ALSO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THE DONOR WHO WHILE SERVING HIS COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR WAS KILLED IN FRANCE IN 1916. BY DESIRE AND BY GIFT OF GEORGE RISCHBIETH JURY: SOMETIME SCHOLAR OF ST PETER’S COLLEGE. DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI. DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI is a line from the Roman lyrical poet Horace's Odes (III.2.13). The line translates as: "It is sweet and proper to die for one's country."
