24.01.2022 North Stradbroke Island fire: latest update 7 December as at 2:15pm - https://redlnd.cc/nsibushfire2018 North Stradbroke Island residents may notice fire applia...nces leaving the island this afternoon. This follows overnight patrols to ensure any hotspots/flare-ups within the burnt out area of the recent fire were extinguished. The reins have now been handed over to Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) Rangers and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, who will work jointly to monitor the area for the next week. Island residents may experience some intermittent electricity outages as Energex removes its temporary generators on Sunday. Beach access via the causeway at Main Beach is now open.

23.01.2022 QYAC REQUESTS STATE GOVERNMENT TO EXTINGUISH COMMUNITY RIGHTS OF OBJECTION AND APPEAL IN HEADLAND PROPOSAL A Public Notice dated two days ago reveals the whale ...skeleton building proposal for the Point Lookout Headland Public Reserve will become more controversial. It is also expanding, with lectures and events for up to 100 people proposed. But the undemocratic reaction from the State Government and QYAC to widespread opposition (over 24,000 have now signed a petition - http://bit.ly/PLheadlandpetition) to the building plan from Straddie Lovers and community members is shocking. The smaller print at the bottom of the public notice holds the key. Our investigation shows QYAC is requesting the State Planning Minister to make a "Ministerial Infrastructure Designation". This is a fancy title for fast tracking the plan, bypassing the usual Local Council planning and decision processes, and taking away from the community its usual formal rights of objection and appeal to the Courts. Eg the Government 'fact sheet' states "There are no appeal rights applicable to infrastructure designation decisions" - https://dsdmipprd.blob.core.windows.net//FACTSHEETInfrastr The community has until 18 February to object to QYAC's request to trample over the usual community rights, and object to the proposal itself. Those whose rights to appeal would be removed include Aboriginal Elders and other native title owners opposed to the Headland building plan, including for cultural heritage reasons. Beware of misleading and inaccurate media reports (e.g. one yesterday in local media) quoting the CEO of QYAC and which do not mention the real purpose of the public notice and its impact on community rights if the Minister grants QYAC's request. To find out more, click on Images 2 & 3 to expand and read the Public Notice. In our comment we will also provide a clickable link to the web address referred to in the public notice, which exposes the true nature of QYAC's 'small print' request. Save Straddie will have a draft submission available soon for people to use to attach to submissions. We will post on our page when available.

19.01.2022 SAVE OUR HEADLAND - HELP STOP THE BUILDING PLAN! The few people behind the plan to build in the iconic Point Lookout Headland Public Reserve are ignoring the ...massive opposition (on and off Stradbroke Island) and have requested the Queensland Government to FAST TRACK their building proposal and remove community rights of appeal. Only people power can stop this attack on hard won democratic rights. You can help by making submissions opposing the fast tracking and removal of rights of appeal. If you need more info about the issue, see - http://bit.ly/RequestToRemoveRights Over 24,000 have signed a petition opposing any building in the Headland Public Reserve, but this is being ignored so far. Opponents of the plan include many Aboriginal residents and Elders. A draft submission is now available to be sent by copying and pasting into an email. It has been drafted with the assistance of a former Planning and Environmental lawyer with a close connection to Straddie.

17.01.2022 CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TOONDAH WETLANDS AND STRADBROKE HEADLAND CONTROVERSIES The Palaszczuk Government's controversial Toondah Harbour 'reclamation' proposal... to replace Ramsar protected wetlands with high-rises, and its Point Lookout headland building plan are both part of Labor's questionable "Economic Transition Strategy" (ETS) for North Stradbroke Island. The Headland plan is directly linked to the ETS and the multi-million dollar funding package. But Treasurer and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad has stated in a letter from her office (see our comment for link) that "The proposed Toondah Harbour project is fundamental in supporting the economic transition of North Stradbroke Island ...to eco-tourism". Labor is ignoring reality. People are coming to Straddie NOW, and in greater numbers to escape the pressures of crowded urban life. The "transition" started years ago and is well ahead of government planning. Projects to attract tourists are not needed, especially at Point Lookout. The real challenge is to properly manage the increasing crowds of visitors and holiday makers. Providing more rubbish and recycling bins and emptying them more often would be a good start! The activities of the Palaszczuk Labor Government and its refusal to even meet to discuss its tourism related proposals have made people feel like second class citizens. It appears Labor is more interested in representing the interests of property developers and doesn't give a hoot about ordinary people. Sadly, the Palaszczuk Government also appears to be using QYAC, Stradbroke's native title corporation, to help it steamroll the rights of others, including First Nation aboriginal people on Stradbroke. QYAC has close links to the Labor State Government and particularly Deputy Premier Jackie Trad. The Palaszczuk Government and QYAC are behind the plan to commercialise the iconic, heritage listed headland with an unwanted building housing a whale skeleton. If you doubted the headland's natural beauty and its ability to arouse widespread support for its full protection, consider the petition against a building signed by more than 18,500 people so far (see our comment for link), and watch this video and be convinced by the stunning scenery of the headland -https://vimeo.com/310239572 On the other side of Moreton Bay at Toondah Harbour, the Palaszczuk Government and the Redland City Council appear to have used QYAC to advance the Toondah wetlands destruction plan and seemingly the interests of a "developer mate" the Walker Corporation. QYAC is one of few organisations which has publicly supported the Toondah wetlands plan. But many Stradbroke aboriginal people oppose the ecologically destructive proposal and have made strong submissions against the latest version of the scheme (see our comment for details). Support for QYAC on the Island appears to be in sharp decline. The Palaszczuk Government's controversial Toondah wetlands plan is contrary to long-standing Queensland Labor Party policies and Labor Governments' actions to protect these wetlands. And it involves unexplained backflips by Labor (and Jackie Trad in particular) on previous strenuous opposition to Priority Development Areas (PDA's). When attacking the LNP's then new PDA legislation, used to declare the Toondah PDA, Jackie Trad accused the LNP of wanting to line the pockets of its "developer mates". People are naturally wondering what is now motivating Labor? Instead of revoking the Toondah PDA, Labor massively increased the proposed number of units by 450% to 3,600 (see our comment for details). If the plan proceeds, the potential profits are astronomical. Labor may have banned property developer donations to political parties in 2018, but obviously there are other ways of gaining and rewarding "favours". Walker Corp is a controversial company which is owned by Billionaire Lang Walker. The company has a poor environmental record and for at least the last four years has paid no income tax in Australia on hundreds of millions of dollars in earnings in each of those years (see our comment for links). Walker Corp has declared large political donations to both Labor and the Liberals over many years, including $225,000 to the Federal Liberal Party before Josh Frydenberg's controversial decision to ignore expert advice to immediately stop the Toondah proposal under federal environment laws. Fydenberg was encouraged by the Palaszczuk Government to favour Walker with his 'controlled action' decision. See our comment for details. The Palaszczuk State Government doesn't seem to care what offence it causes in the local LNP held State electorate of Oodgeroo - even though large numbers of the people it is offending traditionally vote Labor, as they do in the over-lapping LNP held Federal seat of Bowman. But the problem for Labor is that the offence it is causing is spreading well beyond the local electorates. The Toondah issue is now in the national news, and Labor's Toondah plan is "fundamental" to the "transition" of Straddie. A month ago Annastacia Palaszczuk refused the ABC's request for an interview about her Government's decisions favouring Walker Corporation. What happened to our Premier's promises of honest, open and accountable government?

14.01.2022 #LIVE: A fire is burning on North Stradbroke Island. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services - QFES says its crews are on scene at a bushfire burning in an inacc...essible swamp area west of Peat Mine Track, approximately four kilometres north of East Coast Road, North Stradbroke Island. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and QFES crews are working to contain the fire, which is posing no threat to property at this time. Nearby areas may be affected by a smoke haze. If affected, residents are asked to close windows and doors, and keep medications close by if suffering from a respiratory condition. Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions. We're getting live footage from the chopper now.

13.01.2022 INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM, (AND A WHISTLEBLOWER) START TO UNRAVEL THE TOONDAH "DEVELOPMENT" RORT The Federal Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, has been exposed by the... ABC for favouring a political donor property developer when rejecting (at least twice) expert scientific and legal advice to end the Toondah proposal at Cleveland. The developer wants to dredge internationally recognised, Ramsar "protected" tidal wetlands around the North Stradbroke Island ferry departure point and build 3,600 units. After reading our post, if you want to do something to express your concern, add your name to the Birdlife Australia email action (see below) - and support growing demands for a Federal ICAC. The ABC has revealed that when he was the Federal Environment Minister, Frydenberg was advised by his own public servant experts to immediately reject the Toondah proposal as "clearly unacceptable" under federal environment laws, and that the plan would breach the international Ramsar wetlands protection agreement, signed by Australia. Instead, Frydenberg declared the proposal a "controlled action" - one huge step towards approval. Frydenberg's decision to reject the experts' advice favoured a large political donor property developer, the Walker Corporation, which donated $225,000 to the Federal Liberal Party prior to Frydenberg's decision. But Frydenberg is not the only politician with serious questions to answer. On Thursday, the ABC attempted to put questions to Annastacia Palaszczuk about Deputy Premier Jackie Trad's (together with then Environment Minister Steven Miles) letter of support for Frydenberg's "controlled action" decision, but the Premier "declined" to be interviewed (see updated news story linked below). The State Labor Party declared that it received $23,000 from Walker Corporation in the same year as the larger donation to Frydenberg's Liberal party. Information about normally secret processes in the federal Environment Department, including from the whistleblower, can be heard on Sunday morning at 8am on the ABC's Background Briefing program (Radio National), or you can listen to it here, now - https://www.abc.net.au//the-bird-and-the-busines/10588700 There are some more extraordinary revelations in the Background Briefing story. It is well worth listening to. 08.01.2022 North Stradbroke Island fire: latest update 4 December at 9.00am.

07.01.2022 RECONCILATION OR DISCRIMINATION ON STRADDIE/TERANGERI? These photos were taken at the same event on North Stradbroke Island on 12 December, although the peacefu...l 'protestors', which included Aboriginal Elders, were kept 50 metres from the official event, and the cutting of the cake. If you are an Aboriginal Elder and you go along with, or stay silent on, the Palaszczuk Governments horrendous "development" plans for Cleveland's Toondah Harbour and for North Stradbroke Island e.g. the proposed whale skeleton building in the Point Lookout Headland Public Reserve, then you are treated well, and even given cake - all in the name of "reconciliation". But you are put in a different category if you are an Aboriginal Elder who does not agree with the State Government's environmentally destructive, 3,600 high-rise unit plans for Toondah Harbour. And you are put in this same category if you disagree with the proposed building in the Headland, even though it would destroy the Public Reserve's peace and tranquility, and disrespects Aboriginal cultural heritage - the view of some local Aboriginal Elders. And even though nearly 24,000 Straddie Lovers (still growing) have signed a petition against a building in the Headland Public Reserve - http://bit.ly/PreseveTheHeadland The same applies if you disagree with the Government's other misdirected 'Economic Transition Strategy' (ETS) plans for the Island. If you do not agree with the Government's plans, there will be no cake for you! The State Government and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad have form when it comes to dividing the Stradbroke Aboriginal community Eg - http://bit.ly/divideandrulequandamooka Even if you want to pause the State Government's development plans, pending thorough consultation and a whole Island Management Plan, you are kept at a distance - and watched over by Police (image 3) to make sure you keep your distance from official events. The Premier and the Deputy Premier attended this event on 12 December to confirm sand mining would end on 31 December and to re-state their (more than) $40 Million plans for the Island. But the most interesting fact to emerge was that 30 sand miners would lose their jobs when mining ended. That's right - 30, not "hundreds" (up to "650" the lies extended to) falsely claimed by politicians and others. But 70 people will be employed de-commissioning and rehabilitating mined landscapes destroyed or damaged by sand mining (ABC News see - http://bit.ly/SandMiningEnds). That makes 40 additional jobs according to accepted maths! Yet these facts are being ignored by some sections of the media! This jobs information confirmed a 2015 economic analysis by the Australia Institute that the hype around ending sand mining on Straddie in 2019 was a storm in a teacup. Sand mining has been winding down for years. There used to be three sand mines. Since 2015 there has been one. A highly respected Elder from the One Mile Aboriginal Community on Stradbroke, Dale Ruska, wisely told the attending media (who approached the protestors) "We don't want to see one destructive industry, sand mining, replaced by another destructive industry, tourism". He also spoke of the need for a comprehensive Management Plan for the Island. A few days after the media event, Dale Ruska and others who disagree with the State Government's plans were attacked in a Courier Mail article by those in control of the Government funded Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), including CEO Cameron Costello. Costello and his group have supported the Government's over-the-top plans for the Island and Toondah Harbour. Understandably, the newspaper article has caused further frustration and discontent. This is a link to Dale Ruska's self-published, lengthy response to the Courier Mail attack - https://medium.com/@da/sands-have-been-shifted-88b8891e3556 Importantly, Dale Ruska and many others want to see a comprehensive Management Plan for the Island drawn up, with full community involvement, before any 'development' proceeds. One reason this makes sense is the Island's water bodies are drying up, due to the drought, water extraction to the mainland and years of pressure from sandmining. How can you argue with the sensible suggestion for a Management Plan? Now that we know about the "gross exaggerations" (some dishonest) spread over the ending of sand mining, there is time to pause. There is time to listen to those Aboriginal Elders, and the rest of the Stradbroke community, who so far have not been properly heard. The loss of 30 sand mining jobs does not justify what appears to be an irrational rush by the State Government and by those who control QYAC, to turn Straddie into an international tourist destination - without good cause and without a proper plan, and at the expense of the Stradbroke community and those who want to protect and preserve Straddie for current and future generations to enjoy.

03.01.2022 PRESSURE MOUNTING TO DUMP TOONDAH WETLANDS PLAN The ABC's recent investigation and exposure of Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg's decision favouring a politica...l donor when he was Environment Minister has increased the pressure on politicians to end the controversial Toondah Harbour plan. Frydenberg chose to ignore the Government's own expert scientific and legal advice to immediately refuse federal approval. More people are finding out about the proposed rort, which is clumsily and unconvincingly connected to a planned upgrade of the North Stradbroke Island ferry terminal at Cleveland. For example, our post about the ABC's investigation has been liked and/or shared by over 1,000 and has reached nearly 40,000 people. Our post links the ABC's investigative reports, including a television interview with Frydenberg - https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2312791135460045&id=123257177746796&__xts__[0]=68.ARANphcL4vg4YRGhoSjuW7FYc3jqj4l7szkvFZpr011EQEgtJgnZPEZUNlB6hxzB1i7Yu1s32YGiAdmlE1j07oBx3Zpx3rV6zE_aEj0oI6NVU-qfdQHOph6Nw2duqRGbdd2JqZ8PJ7of8sNBTlJ6VkuB970YPH1Yq0R3WMd4AI3Eg64B-jyd8BnmHHiWd9T0zioA11mqp8wsYZDY8i2yYiWM6PG6-I31IriLdK9caVbYILinZPCIonSfciCIzxQOkI8rOpc9daz1zO7EfPJxm1YnMX-kD4dAcOCU3aR5aigThmhFUfS2Wwl5P0VZh0OxIqNKDaeuXX0I4RwQdHo15nEATQ&__tn__=-R Many other FB pages also have helped spread the ABC's excellent investigation of Federal Government involvement in the plan to allow a property developer to make a fortune from dredging over 40 hectares (100 acres) of internationally protected and publicly owned Ramsar listed wetlands and replacing with high-rise units. The developer, Walker Corporation, is a long term political donor to both major parties. Prior to Frydenberg's decision, Walker donated $225,000 to the Federal Liberal Party. In the same year the Queensland Labor Party declared it received $23,000. The ABC also reported that Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and then Qld Environment Minister, Steven Miles sent a letter to Frydenberg encouraging him to make the decision favouring Walker Corp. Trad was the Minister in charge of the State Government controlled Toondah plan when it was announced in late 2015 that 3,600 units were proposed - a massive 450% increase from the 800 previously announced by the Redlands Mayor, Karen Williams. The ABC reported that the Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, refused to be interviewed about her Government's decisions favouring the developer. When are the politicians going to get it? People do not accept the Toondah Harbour plan to destroy Ramsar protected wetlands to line the pockets of a billionaire developer and his cronies. It is also contrary to ALP policies of protection of Ramsar wetlands and flies in the face of Labor's previous "proud history" of protecting these same wetlands. As our December 16 post revealed, in the same year that Walker Corp made the donations totalling a quarter of a million dollars, Walker paid ZERO income tax. The ATO revealed earlier this month that its earnings last year exceeded $438 Million. For at least the last four corporate tax years (since the ATO's annual corporate transparency report began) Walker Corp has paid nil income tax on total earnings of over $1.5 Billion! The company is owned by Billionaire Lang Walker, one of Australia's richest men. The view in the first image would disappear behind a forest of high-rises if the Toondah plan is allowed to proceed. The second photo, taken a few days ago, depicts a critically endangered Eastern Curlew (large bird at the back), several whimbrels (smaller down-turned beaks) and endangered Bar-tailed Godwits (slightly upturned beaks) on a tidal feeding ground which would be "reclaimed" under the State Government's Toondah Priority Development Area (PDA) plan. All three species breed in the Northern Hemisphere and annually fly thousands of kilometres to Australia for the summer months.

01.01.2022 Please slow down and take care when driving on Straddie's Main & Flinders beaches at the moment, so these little hatchlings can make it to the water safely Many thanks. Please share.
