24.01.2022 Friends, Wo-mans, Croydon-men, lend us your ears, as we lend you our beers, and not so subtly employ Antonian rhetoric to tell you the tale of "Le Baladin". "Le Baladin", or "wandering entertainer" in old French, is the Italian craft brewpub of Teo Musso. Teo grew up in the commune of Piozzo, in northern Italy’s Piedmont. Despite being surrounded by wine-making and wine-drinking, being just a stone’s throw from Barolo and the likes, a rebellious teenage Teo defied his father ...by opting to drink industrial lagers at mealtime, rather than his father’s home-made wines. Fortunately summers spent working with his uncle, a pastry chef in Monte Carlo, introduced the young Teo to Belgian Trappist dark beer, the Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue Cap), and the aromas and tastes change his life. Teo returned to Piozzo with a Monte Carlo Opera ballerina and a dream to open a bar, and Le Baladin was born in 1986 with its own troupe of wandering entertainers: 200 beer labels selected by Teo from across Europe, each with their own story to tell the wine-swilling locals to try something new. After 10 years of expanding the palate of his patrons, Teo decided it was time he made his own beer. He travelled to Belgium to learn from Christian Bauweraerts, co-founder of Brasserie d’Achouffe to study a more skilled, technical approach and from Jean-Louis Dits of Brasserie à Vapeur, with his production linked more to philosophy and emotions. In 1996 Teo started testing out his creations on his regulars, and slowly built up a fan base. Teo is passionate about creating beers from locally sourced products, some farmed on his own land, and above all, creating beers that can be enjoyed with good food. Teo’s Baladins now wander around the globe, and tonight for your entertainment at Strand Cellars, we present the following performances: Wayan Saison Isaac Blanche Birra Nazionale Blonde Ale Nora Egyptian Ale Super Bitter Belgian Strong Amber Ale Come run away* with the circus tonight from 5pm, The Strand Cellars Team (*But please finalise any purchases before you run away)

19.01.2022 Gin Tasting Thursday: Taste of the Bush, Mountains, Meadows & Sea 19 November 2020 Happiness is a warm gin.... With an ice cube or two. Maybe some tonic... This Thursday at Strand Cellars we present a line-up of gins that explore the flavours of Australia. "Dasher + Fisher Tasmanian Gin" from Southern Wild Distillery in Devonport source local botanicals from the Mountains, Meadows and Oceans of Tasmania, namely Pepperberry, Lavender and Wakame, respectively. The names Dasher + Fisher come from two of the wild rivers that channel the pure waters from the snow-capped Cradle Mountain through the rich soils, eventually out to the sea in Tasmania's North West, providing life and nourishment to the foraged flora on its way. Back on the mainland, for 70-odd years, Ballarat was home to the first distillery of the pre-federation colony of Victoria, the Warrenheip Distillery. An excerpt from the then local paper, The Star, dated Monday, 24th October 1864 reads "the Warrenheip distillery, has commenced the manufacture of a new description of spirits, namely, gin. It is made from rye, barley malt, and juniper berries imported for the purpose. The new spirit has been brought into the market, and a tolerably competent judge who has sampled it at the distillery, assures us that it is a more pure and wholesome liquor than most of those imported under the same name, and has the genuine juniper aroma." (Trove, National Library of Australia) Closing its doors in the 1930s, Ballarat remained "dis-distillered" during the uncool decades of gin where it fell out of favour. Finally in 2016, Kilderkin Distillery was established to continue the city's next chapter of gin production with its "Larrikin Gin". The Sunburnt Country - Bush Tucker Gin is a truly Australian spirit: like the other gins in the range, it is distilled with a selection of indigenous botanicals such as Lemon and Cinnamon Myrtles, Roasted Wattle Seed and Pepperberry Leaf. However it is bottled at a hot 50.7%, a reference to Australia's highest temperature in recorded history. Let's hope in our true Australian spirit of the tall poppy that we don't let the mercury beat that record this year! Come join us tomorrow (Thursday) evening to be a "tolerably competent judge" for yourself with the following gins: Dasher + Fisher Meadow Gin Dasher + Fisher Mountain Gin Dasher + Fisher Ocean Gin Larrikin Gin Scoundrel - London Dry Larrikin Gin Sunburnt Country - Bush Tucker Larrikin Gin Barrel Aged - Limited Edition Larrikin Gin Buccaneer - Navy Strength Please note: This is sure to be another exciting experience in our Tasting Room. Please contact us on (02) 9747 5438 or [email protected] to book your limited place in one of the following Gin Sessions this Thursday. Tickets: $15, payable on the night. Session times: 5pm : 6pm : 7pm : 8pm Cheers, The Strand Cellars Team

18.01.2022 Beer AND Wine Tastings: To Balter in The Old Clare 3 - 4 December 2020 ***Beer Tasting Thursday: Balter Brewing Company***... As of next week, the NSW Government has advised that we can dance if we want to. We can leave your friends behind. ‘Cause your friends close dance, and if they dance closer than 2sqm, well they’re no friends of mine. But even with these government regulated Safety Dance measures in place to lift the dance ban, you may not feel your out of practice skill set and post-lockdown bacon-laden body are ready to join everybody to cut footloose... May we suggest you ease your own dance restrictions at home with a Balter. Balter (v) to dance artlessly without particular skill or grace, but usually with enjoyment. Balter (n) a beer that tickle(s) your tongue and put(s) a grin on your head. 14.01.2022 Wine Tasting Friday: Henri & Ernie 23rd October 2020 Christian Pol-Roger mused that "Champagne should be cold, dry and preferably free".... Tomorrow at Strand Cellars, it will be. Friday, October 23rd is World Champagne Day! #ChampagneDay To celebrate, our Friday tasting will see us "breaking the ice" with a Champagne famous for being served on the Titanic. Founded in 1757, Maison Henri Abelé is the third oldest Champagne House in Reims and in 1884 were pioneers in adopting the frozen disgorge method (the technique used to remove the dead, floaty bits that have imparted all of their complexities to the bottle after aging on them for 3 years, without losing too much of the said bottle- complexed wine). With the signature toasty, spiced notes of honey found in the Brut, and the delicious bouquet of strawberries and raspberries from the Brut Rosé, both of these NV Champagnes are based on a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and start their bottled life in an underground 2km maze of caves dug out of the solid chalk under the city of Reims. Oscar Wilde noted that "pleasure without Champagne is purely artificial". He also made some point about being "ernest". Ernest Schuetz's point of being is to make wine. Adding to the pleasure of tomorrow night's tasting: Ernest Schuetz Estate Wines. Nothing artificial. Ernie and his wife Joanna purchased their "Mudgee" or "nest in the hills" in the local Wiradjuri language, in 2003 on Ernie realising that some of his favourite wines were coming out of the Mudgee soils. Known for his Amarone and Ripasso-style wines, Ernie personally delivers his wines to our shop and we are privileged to enjoy a special friendship with him. Join us tomorrow (Friday) from 5pm to taste: Henri Abelé NV Brut Henri Abelé NV Brut Rosé Ernest Schuetz Terra X Chardonnay 2019 Ernest Schuetz Family Reserve Chardonnay 2017 Ernest Schuetz Terra X Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Ernest Schuetz Family Reserve Black Merlot 2015 Ernest Schuetz Family Reserve Black Syrah 2016 We look forward to celebrating World Champagne Day with you. 14.01.2022 Wine Tasting Friday: Charles Melton Wines Friday, 28th August from 5pm If you can cast your mind back to a not-so simpler time of one fortnight ago, you might remember our little tasting that explored the memorable 2016 vintage of the Barossa Valley through the wines of Grant Burge.... This week at Strand Cellars, we continue to focus on the vintage that challenged old vine Grenache and Shiraz to produce outstanding fruit with the wines of Charles Melton. Charlie Melton fell into winemaking in the Barossa in the 1970s by way of a broken-down Holden ute. In the 1980s he joined his mentor, Peter Lehmann, as well as Grant Burge and a small select group of rebels in ignoring the then Government's call to rip out the unfashionable, "underperforming" century-old Grenache and Shiraz vines under the "Barossa Vine Pull Scheme". Travels through France had revealed to Charlie the possibilities for these undervalued old vines in Australia, the fruit at home used mainly in cheap fortifieds. Inspired by the Southern Rhône, Charles Melton wines developed a reputation for championing the blending of Grenache. The flagship GSM, the "Nine Popes", took its name from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, fortunately the bad translation saving Charlie any troubles with stealing the name from the AOC. Friday night's line-up includes: - "Rose of Virginia" Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 - "La Belle Mère" SGM 2017 - "The Father in Law" Shiraz Barossa 2017 - "The Reformation" Old Vine Grenache Barossa 2016 - "Voices of Angels" Shiraz Adelaide Hills 2016 - "Cabernet" Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa 2016 - "The Mystery" We hope to see you tomorrow evening from 5pm. - To encourage social distancing and remind you of good hygiene practices, our Tasting Room is limited to 6 people at a time. - To keep your community safe and well, if anyone in your home is showing COVID-19 symptoms, or has recently visited a hotspot area, we ask you to stay at home. We appreciate your patience and understanding if you arrive and the Tasting Room is at capacity. If you would like to book ahead for a tasting session at a particular time, call us 02 9747 5438 or email [email protected] and we will do our best to accommodate. Cheers, The Strand Cellars Team

Our flightless wine flight begins in South Australia's Barossa Valley, with the Rhône-style wines of Torbreck. We then head to France, but before taking you to the Grenaches and the Syrahs of the Rhône, we make a quick but delightful stop further upstream to the Saône with a cherrybomb of a Gamay from Beaujolais. Whilst Syrah gets its own day on the international wine calendar in February, this day is all about the pizzazz of the Australian Shiraz. The first plantings of Shiraz in Australia are believed to date back some 200 years, with Australia now boasting some of the oldest vines in the world. It is no secret at Strand Cellars that the varietal is a family favourite, whether it is Anthony encouraging you to expand your Shiraz palate across the many varied regions of South Australia, Victoria and NSW or his daughter Stephanie, or as you may know her, Rhône Girl recounting her many adventures tending to the Syrah vines that trellis the steep slopes of Hermitage. This week, both our Beer Tasting Thursday and our Wine Tasting Friday will be dedicated to Australian Shiraz, exploring regions and styles, including dry, fortified, sparkling, distilled and even brewed.
