04.01.2022 FIND TIME TO REFLECT Moments for reflection deserve to be valued highly and protected. They can easily be lost or forgotten if taken for granted. These photos... from the talented Ridhwaan Moolla give us a chance to reflect on the show garden Velvaere seen at Perth Garden Festival last weekend. The detail of design seen throughout ( Urban Journey Design Studio) and with the support of many to make it possible being so appreciated along the way... it's a time to be thankful and take a breath. We look forward to seeing future show gardens, mindful of the heart and love that goes into each of them. 02.01.2022 FAQ's I'M TERRACING A SLOPE, HOW FAR APART SHOULD THE STEP UPS BE? Ok so here's the thing, loose sand naturally has an angle of repose of 34 degrees. This is t...he angle the sand naturally settles at on a slope. Allowing for that is a handy guide as to how far apart the steps should be, because it means if one wall fails they don't all go! This means the distance from one edge to the next should be atleast 1.5 times the height of the retaining edge. So if the edge is 400mm high, the gap between the step ups should be atleast 600mm. Easy as that! As for the plantings, they certainly have a role to play in stabilising the soil and beautifying too. The cascading varieties look great don't they? This garden design is by Brendan Moar and is a great example of terracing done well, build by Design It Landscapes. Please note this info is for retaining, not structural load bearing situations.
