25.01.2022 Sharing a conversation - Artists in isolation... Shakira Dugan in Stratford.....https://www.victorianopera.com.au/virtual-victorian-opera

25.01.2022 Earlier today I put up a post of my long lost brother Ray. Gavin Donghue answered to tell me he had one of Rays poems and had published it in the Stratford Tow...n Crier and he graciously emailed it to me so that I could share it with my family and friends. Ray was a larrikin in his younger days, but reading this I know he also has a soft and human side. I hope you all enjoy it.Thank you Gavan Donoghue See more

22.01.2022 Ok so here’s an update on what’s been happening with the future of The Stratford Courthouse A small team worked on the business case and it was sent to council staff on Monday this week. Basically the business case asked for support from council for $30,000/annum over two years to support The Stratford Courthouse proposed a model of operation which includes a community committee of management, a partnership with Regional Arts Victoria, money to cover the lease of the court...house and the employment of a part time artistic director/venue manager. The aim being in two years the venue would become self-sufficient and no funding would be needed from Wellington Shire Council to continue operating the space. The business case had to include budgets, a plan of action, support letters and other support materials. It was a comprehensive document with lots of work put into the submission from the community committee. The committee have asked for your support on Tuesday and if you’re able to attend the open council meeting on TOMORROW NIGHT: Tuesday, 17th December, 6.00pm at Port of Sale/Gippsland Art Gallery & Library STRATFORD WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!! The Shire has to be shown that we care about the future of the Stratford Courthouse Theatre. This is your last chance to keep the venue open in the short term so once again I would encourage all of you and your friends to attend the council meeting on Tuesday and make sure your voice is heard.

19.01.2022 Australians in Wellington worth recognising Nominations for the 2020 Australia Day Awards are now open.... Now is the time to start thinking about a person, event and/or community group that has made an exceptional impression on you and deserves acknowledgement. Council is inviting nominations across four categories: Citizen of the Year: aged 25 years or older and have made a significant contribution during the year and/or given outstanding service to the Wellington community over a number of years. Young Citizen of the Year: aged 24 years or younger who have made a significant contribution during the year and/or given outstanding service to the Wellington community over a number of years. Community Group of the Year: a group that has made a significant sustained contribution to the Wellington community Community Event of the Year: the person or group who has provided the most outstanding community event during the year. Winners of this year’s awards were Citizen of the Year Laurie Smyth, Young Citizen of the Year Tilly Korbman, Community Event of the Year Stratford Victoria Sister Cities Committee and Event of the Year Yarram Centenary of Flight Airshow. The Australia Day Awards recognise important community members who make a positive difference to the vibrancy within the municipality through business leadership, innovation, arts, culture, sport, social aspects and improving the lives of Wellington residents and the community at large. Wellington Shire Council Mayor Alan Hall encouraged Wellington residents to nominate or self-nominate a person or group who is deserving of recognition. This is the perfect opportunity to nominate a person or group you think is making an amazing contribution to our way of life here in Wellington, he said. It’s always tough choosing the winners because we have so many wonderful people in our community who do so much, not seeking recognition or thanks. The awards will be presented during a luncheon in December. Nominations must be submitted using the official forms. For more information or to submit a nomination visit www.wellington.vic.gov.au/ausdayawards2020. Applications close Thursday, 31 October. For further information phone Council’s contact customer service on 1300 366 244.

19.01.2022 Our apologies but we omitted a special article that needs promoting.............. From the STRATFORD R S L SUB BRANCH INC. This has certainly been a different year to any other for the local RSL Sub Branch. Having to go into lockdown in late March meant we knew ANZAC Day was immediately in jeopardy as far as being the usual community commemorative event weve had in past years was concerned. However we were able to honour the day and those fallen with our street candle, and ...one minutes Silence event . Thank you to all who participated, and for those of you who rang and asked for ideas. Sadly , we have lost two valued members in this last six months, David Bretel and Stan Kerr, both of whom were very valued members of our small veteran community. They both struggled with very debilitating illnesses and their courage and determination shone through until the end. Vale boys. The Stratford Cemetery Trusts Commemorative Day, now due to be held in October may at his rate be held off once more if the virus cannot be subdued. Our members have not been able to hold meetings and have tried to keep their social distancing protocol going in daily life. On August 15th you may hear a piper playing at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park. Pipe Bands Australia, the national governing body of Pipe and Drums Bands in Australia has called on its members to attend local cenotaphs and War Memorials on August 15th at 0930 hrs to play the Lament, V. P. 75 Lest We Forget. It signifies 75 years since the signing of the peace for the war in the Pacific. It will be a very small commemoration with the President of the Sub Branch laying a wreath. Shortly after , piper John Hanlon who regularly plays at our Dawn service, will go out to the Stratford Cemetery to honour the more than 150 veteran members from WW2 buried here in Stratford with the playing of the Lament. Later that morning some members will attend a combined service in Sale for the Lament and also the commemoration of Vietnam Veterans day which falls on the 18th August each year. Stay safe everybody, Michael Hutchison. See more

14.01.2022 Artwork by Shakira Dugan 1 hr As a resident of Gippsland it has been so sad to see the flow of packed cars go through our town as they are evacuated from their homes because of the fires. My family and Town is safe but I have friends who have been affected. So weird to see and hear the world talking about the communities and the country you love and live in and what is happening to it. I know so many have donated so much of their time, money and strength in helping battle ...the fires and keep everyone safe so until I can do more I want to do what I can now with what I have now. I know the bigger known charities are going strong with donations but can people tag some lesser known ones around the skirts of West East Gippsland that give sanctuary or aid to wildlife? Im currently generating some prints of the koalas and kookaburras and would like to sell and donate! Please tag places or people that need help #australianwildlife #koalas #kookaburra #art #drawing #fineart #eastgippsland #bushfiresaustralia #endangered #donate

11.01.2022 The Stratford Elephant has brought together two long lost brothers! Many locals know a version of the Stratford Elephant Mystery and that Gavan Donoghue wrote a series of stories on the subject for the Crier, followed by a book published last year. Well here is an amazing and happy outcome! A young lad ran away to the circus many years ago and changed his name. Through Gavan’s writing, the younger brother of the circus runaway has found his long lost sibling and the two are making up for lost time.

08.01.2022 The Stratford Town Crier will be in your letterboxes and usual distribution points as normal this week. The Crier is a monthly publication so it hasnt focused on the evolving virus, as that situation is changing daily - scratch that - hourly! And it is hoped that the Crier will give welcome relief from 24/7 virus news. Having said that, weve uninvited our usual volunteers who kindly help sort and distribute and just the tiny committee will do that this month and for however long this situation lasts. We will continue to produce hard copies and digital versions as normal, just as long as we all stay well, as we hope you all do too.

If you would like to express your interest please call either school and leave your name and contact details along with the days you would be... interested in using the program. 05.01.2022 From Destination Gippsland....... Much-loved Gippsland local DJ, DJ Nige (Nigel Beck) has been hitting the streets with his vivid vintage Kombi (Deidre) in their home-town of Warragul playing tunes and entertaining passers-by to brighten the days during Covid-19 restrictions, and now he is planning to take the music to the people with a tour of Gippsland. ... DJ Nige’s infectious (pardon the pun) joy sparked interest with the Herald Sun, SBS The Feed, The Warragul Gazette and various online publications & sites (clippings below), and with Wellington Shire dates already locked in, we thought it might be of interest to the Stratford Town Crier? Local dates are as follows: ROSEDALE 10 October, Princes Hwy, Main Street. YARRAM 17 October, Commercial Road. HEYFIELD 24 October, Temple Street. LOCH SPORT 31 October, town centre. PORT ALBERT 7 November, Tarraville Road/Wharf Street. MAFFRA 14 November, Johnson Street. Please see media release and high res images attached, plus more information on this Facebook event: https://fb.me/e/1KP5cOwME More dates are being confirmed across Gippsland, if you have any questions or would like to tee up a chat with Nige please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
