According to his convict records his occupation was Morocco (Leather Maker), on August 4th 1834, at St. Leonard, Shoreditch, he stole 6 sover...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Painting progress! Artist Ray Thomas and his team have started painting the mural on the side of the new rail bridge over the Avon River, and it's coming al...ong nicely. The mural honours the Brayakaulung clan and their connection to the Avon River, and features Gunaikurnai ancestral totems and cultural practices including scarred canoe trees, stone grinding grooves and bush foods.

21.01.2022 Again thanks Shirley McNally, Does anyone know the actual location where these events were held?

19.01.2022 WE FOUND SOMETHING INTERESTING. Going back to a town map, looking for another item, we came across a TEMPERANCE HALL! Located between Jones and Niel st. Heading north, turn right from McFarlane st. (Now vacant council property) Also behind Wemyss house. Daniel then found newspaper item. June 1907

19.01.2022 ** DALGETY CATTLE YARD, LOOKING NORTH ** Discovered this gem on Tuesday at the Museum. Image is taken in about 1950, written on paper is "start of working bee on Dalgety Cattle Yard, in background is Police Station, Eric Lees Fordson tractor, former state school house, Simons Rabbit Freezing Works, Bill Taylors house (Chandlers)" - Dalgety Cattle Yard now Bowls Club. - Police Station same location just new building. - Rabbit Freezing Works now private residence. ... - House, no longer there. Interestingly this is the only image we have of the Rabbit Freezing Works so it was a wonderful find. Cheers Daniel

19.01.2022 WE HAD A LOVELY TRIP LAST NIGHT ON THE LAST TRAIN TO MELBOURNE TO USE THE OLD BRIDGE. This took approximately 5/6 minutes, and it will be interesting to see the travel time on the new bridge. The video clip gives a clear view of the nearly completed works.

Fathers day and Mothers day are good opportunities for us all to look back at our history and remember those who came before us. Pictured is Jim Estoppey on the shoulders of his father Rod Estoppey at "Culloden", north of Briagolong in about 1929. Cheers Daniel

16.01.2022 Our #WADayHero is Bessie Flowers, a Menang Noongar woman who was born in King Georges Sound, Albany sometime in 1851. Bessie was educated at Annesfield, an Ang...lican School for Noongar children run by Anne Camfield, where she acquired a love of music and reading. When aged about 13, she was awarded a certificate of proficiency and in 1864-65 she attended a Church of England model school in Sydney where she trained as a teacher. In 1866 Bessie returned to Albany to become Camfields assistant and also played the organ at St Johns Church. The following year Bessie accepted an offer to be the teacher at Ramahyuck mission station in Gippsland, Victoria, run by Br. Frederick Hagenauer. On 4 November 1868 at the chapel at Ramahyuck, aged 17, she married Adolph Donald Cameron an Aboriginal man from Wimmera. She and Donald were given the responsibility of managing the missions boarding school and she began to bear and raise her eight children. The Aborigines Protection Act of 1886 was to have a great impact on Bessies family. The Act determined that Aboriginal people who it defined as half-castes should be separated from full blood Aboriginal people and merged into the general population. It forced Bessies family to fragment and two of her daughters were apprenticed as domestic servants. Bessie focused much of her energies helping her daughters and other Aboriginal women to keep their families together. Bessie died on 14 January 1895 at Bairnsdale and was buried in the cemetery there. Her husband, three daughters and two sons survived her. In Albany on 24 February, 2013 during a moving ceremony of song, smoke and sand members of her family and the Noongar community welcomed home the spirit of Bessie Flowers.

13.01.2022 AIRLY LOOKING ACROSS TO REDBANK These pics were taken this morning of the flats along the Avon River at Airly.

12.01.2022 We recently transported 60-tonne beams nearly 300km from Melton to Stratford and have started to lift them in place as part of the new rail bridge over the Avon... River. The massive beams will form the superstructure of the new bridge, which will allow trains to travel at up to 90km/h in this section.

12.01.2022 How did the Victorian Railways keep its passengers from freezing on chilly winter days? With foot warmers! From 1889 through to the 1930s, these stainless steel... canisters filled with salt crystals, were boiled up, placed in canvas sleeves and distributed throughout the carriages. After about 10 hours theyd start to lose their effectiveness, so staff (and sometimes passengers) would give them a good shake, whereby the cooled liquid would reform into a solid mass of hot crystals. At the journeys end theyd be boiled again for the next trip. View the photo in high resolution here: https://beta.prov.vic.gov.au/collection/PID2171900821 #TrainsPlanesAutomobiles Tuesday! See more

12.01.2022 ** EARLIEST MAP OF STRATFORD PLAIN FOUND ** Thinking this map may date from about 1850. Found last Tuesday at the museum in the bottom of an unsorted box, this is so far the earliest map of the Stratford Plain area. I have spent some time numbering the second pic to make the map easier to understand. #1 - Grass Paddock & huts (north of current Weirs Crossing) #2 - Laborers Huts #3 - Woolshed & yards... #4 - Original Stratford Burial Ground (On Stewarts Lane) #5 - Avon River Crossing (Weirs Crossing), first flour mill was built just south of here not long after this map was drawn #6 - Track to Alberton via Sale #7 - Laborers Huts #8 - Cultivation Paddock #9 - Paddock (Became Hobsons Paddock) #10 - Small Yard (Became Hobsons Garden) #11 - Shakespeare Hotel (Edwin Hobson operated not long after this map was drawn) #12 - Stratford Homestead (Became James Duncans Store after W. O. Raymond moved to Strathfieldsaye in 1848) #13 - Edward Cliffe, ? Tanner, Lubin Slater, Edward Hazlett & James Dargan Families Huts Location (now the corner of McMillan & Merrick St) #14 - Track from Stratford Plain to Bushy Park Interestingly 2 years ago in 2018 I drew a map of the Stratford area by putting together fragments of different maps from the mid 1850s and none showed the track from Weirs Crossing south to Alberton. All showed the track from the township to Alberton, my suspicion is that the Weirs Crossing track was only locally used as the track through the town became the main route through to Omeo. Cheers Daniel

12.01.2022 Hi all, I have created a separate gmail for Convicts of Gippsland due to increased need, it is.... [email protected] or ... [email protected] as Convicts of Gippsland is affiliated with the Stratford Museum (Stratford & District Historical Society Inc). Cheers Daniel

12.01.2022 HAPPY MOTHERS DAY A shout out to all the amazing parents out there and those who are no longer with us. The pics are of Grace Lloyd, her husband Thomas and their children. The family built & ran Lloyds store on the site of the current motel from the early beginnings of Stratford. Cheers Daniel

12.01.2022 While these are not technically fishing photos, I thought they fit in with the fishing theme as they show two locations relevant to the early history of profess...ional fishing in the Gippsland Lakes - the Perry River Landing at Strathfieldsaye and Hollands Landing. The boat in both pictures is also a retired fishing boat, which my grandfather got from Paynesville in about 1961, but which was already quite old at that time. The engine is visible inside the boat in the first photo. If anyone is able to tell me anything about the boat I would be most interested. See more

09.01.2022 The original Llowalong homestead was split into sections and the pieces scattered around the district. Most are gone now but recently returning local Gavin Dwye...r has given new life to the remainder. Gavin purchased the deralict and tumbled down structure recently. Not only is it being lovingly restored, but Gavin located the original kitchen up at Shannyne and Tom Stothers and has reunited the pair. I just think this is wonderful! Gavin says the house was moved during the Spanish flu and the kitchen during COVID. See more

04.01.2022 Following an article we did for the 'TownCrier' in August, we wrote of the three Mitchell brothers who all paid 'The Supreme Sacrifice' in WW1. It was always kn...own their sister Alice lost 3 brothers and a fiance during the Great War. Following many enquiries we finally found the name of her 'lost fiance', HERBERT JOHN PETERS', who was killed at Gallipoli,a few weeks after his 'cobber' William Mitchell. Here are a few excerpts from a letter he wrote home and was published in the "STRATFORD SENTINEL AND BRIAGOLONG EXPRESS. Friday 8th October 1915. 'IN THE FIRING LINE' Letter from Private Herb Peters. The following interesting letter has been received by Mr A. Ducret, of Stratford, who at the time of writing was serving in the trenches. Anzac 10/8/15 Dear Alf, your very welcome letter received last mail. I am in good health, excepting a slight crack on the head soon after we landed here. I feel very much broke up at present, poor old Bill Mitchell has been missing since last Saturday. I've given up hope of ever seeing him again.Charlie Garden got hit in the leg in the same attack, and our fourth man of the section is also missing. I alone remain. I feel real broken up over losing my 'cobbers',I don't feel like writing to Bill's people just yet, but I must do later if I am spared.I have some letters he wrote and did not post, one to you among them, which I will enclose with this. There are tons of shells flying over us, mostly from our own guns. They are plugging away from both land and sea, and I can tell you there is an awful din.(D--- that gun, she sent a handful of dirt down the back of my neck that shot.) 'Stewie' is not too well, and seems to be very nervous. He is the only old sergeant we have left in our squad. I am very much obliged to Miss Riley and yourself for taking care of the poor old maters's grave. I often feel glad of late that she is not alive now to worry over me. It must be a very anxious time for those women who have relatives at the war. Well Alf., I'll have to close this. Try and break the news to Bill's people as well as you can, they will be informed officially before they get the news from me. I know it will break his mother up. Good-bye old chap, and goodluck. From your cobber H PETERS P.S. Remember me to all the boys. HERBERT PETERS was killed on the 30th August 1915, and is buried on Hill 10 Cemetery, Suvla, Gallipoli. LEST WE FORGET L

04.01.2022 We hope to all stand in our driveways tomorrow @ 6am. WE WILL REMEMBER

03.01.2022 A move is afoot to do some restoration and preservation of a lone grave at Seaspray. Mary Ricketts was buried out on the ridge overlooking Merriman's Creek, su...rrounding farmland and the ocean in August 1870. She had been the faithful housekeeper of Patrick Coady Buckley for almost the whole of his time at Prospect. Her husband George and daughter Eliza also lived there and worked for PCB. Mary's imported headstone has weathered well and is still very readable. The wrought iron fence, presumably erected by PCB, has fallen into several pieces although the footings are still secure. In the 1980's a treated pine fence was erected around the grave to protect it from stock. The grave is situated on private land which is currently up for sale. We are wondering about the logistics of lone graves on private land and whether the landowners have the right to demolish or move them. Does anyone know any information and the rights of landowners. Also is there a bucket of money anywhere which assists with the restoration of lone graves? Would appreciate any assistance with these two issues. See more

03.01.2022 On behalf of Marg Robbins for Stratford Cemetery Trust - Thanks to Susan Neeves for making these 200 poppies out of recycled plastic bottle bases. If you are o...ut exercising you can see her work on the RSL fence and in the median strip. It is a reminder that August 15th 2020 marks 75 years since "Victory in the Pacific" You will have to tune in to the ABC to hear the bagpipes as the restrictions means the earlier messages about a piper in our park and at the cemetery have had to be altered. Pipers are now only permitted to play on their own properties. Our planned commemoration of service for our WW2 men and women interred at Stratford Cemetery has been postponed indefinitely, but here are their names. Remembering all who served and are serving in all conflicts in defence of Australia. See more

01.01.2022 The Avon River rail bridge has served Gippsland for more than 130 years. It’s time for a well-earned retirement.
