23.01.2022 Just dropping the kids off at school! Local photographer Paul Thomsen captured this beautiful moment of a male comb-crested jacana with his chicks at Yellow W...aters Billabong in Kakadu National Park. The comb-crested jacana is an Australian native waterbird and can be spotted around Top End wetlands. They're also known as lotus birds or Jesus birds for their ability to seemingly walk on water. Male jacanas are like stay-at-home dads, as the mother disappears after laying the eggs, leaving him to look after the chicks. When the father senses danger he will bundle his chicks up in his wings to carry them to safety. A reminder of our amazing native wildlife!

21.01.2022 Sharing from the World FB page because there is no share button.... Stratfords of the World Connecticut bid a reluctant, albeit loving farewell to Matt Catalano July 9 on the grounds of the Shakespeare Theatre lost to fire in 2019. For many years, Matt worked tirelessly for the redevelopment of the theatre, producing successful outdoor summer festivals celebrating the works of William Shakespeare. Catching Sister Cities passion from his parents, Hugh and Mary Lou, he participated in Stratfords of the World activities and reunions with them and his brothers Mark and Michael. Matt lead the Connecticut delegation to PEI in 2012. Matt leaves our Stratford and the rich Catalano legacy here for his new permanent home in Indialantic, Florida. Thank you, Matt, for all you have done.
20.01.2022 Friends, it's that time of the year when joeys emerge from pouches and start to explore the world outside it. During this time, they learn many things with thei...r mums, especially how to hang tight while climbing trees. Watch as my ex-girlfriend Ngardang move around with her tiny joey-backpack. Ngardang is a super mum, she had five joeys since 2016! No wonder why her name means mother in the Wathaurong Aboriginal language of the You Yangs/Geelong/Ballarat region. https://buff.ly/35TtHwo
20.01.2022 Some fabulous photos of our region
19.01.2022 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT Over the past few months, we’ve been waiting to re-open. And now that we're open, we are very proud to announce we have not one, not two,... not three, but four more Koala Joeys here at the Billabong Zoo. Our world-renowned Koala breeding Centre has been successfully breeding Koalas since 1999 and it’s so exciting to see four new smiling faces out and about here at the Billabong. We made a quick little video of them getting weighed so you can get a chance to meet them. And one lucky fan will get the chance to name one, so stay tuned for that. A big thank you to everyone for all your support. We really appreciate it. See more
18.01.2022 On This Day - 19th June (1954) - The iconic Tassie Devil character made his debut in the animated film 'Devil May Hare" starring Bugs Bunny (we have also in...cluded 11 gorgeous photos of real Tassie Devils) 66 years ago today the iconic Looney Tunes character of Tassie Devil made his debut in animation history. In short, Bugs Bunny is surprised when a group of fleeing animals runs by, but soon discovers the reason, a Tasmanian Devil is on the loose! And, driven by a voracious appetite they love to eat everything in their path including rabbits! Thankfully for cinematic history Tassie Devil (simply known as Taz) failed in his bid to catch Bugs Bunny. At the time he also failed to impress Edward Selzer, the head of animation, as he regarded Taz too voilent for children and he decided to shelve Taz. However, after literally thousands of fan letters wanting to see more of Taz, the decision was overturned by studio owner Jack Warner and the rest is... as you say HISTORY. Although Taz can be very devious, he is also very sweet at times. Taz continued to make guest appearances in Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartonns before our iconic Tassie Devil was given his own show. In 1991 the animated series Taz-Maniz debuted to the love of audiences worldwide. He also appeared in feature films such as Space Jam with the best basketbaler of all time Michael Jordan. Taz, the Tassie Devil, has inspired generations to worry about the fate of the real Tasmanain Devils. Real Tasmanian devils are nothing like an adorable cartoon character. The carnivorous marsupial is anything but cute, looking like a small black dog with an oversized head and nasty teeth, is so antisocial it cannot be domesticated, is notoriously ill-tempered, and has a mean case of body odor. They have been decimated by a horrible facial tumor disease that wiped out 80 percent of them. Together with hunting (aborigines collected their teeth for necklaces, and European settlers killed them to protect livestock), the disease nearly sent the species the way of the dodo. Today the little Tassie Devils are among conservation’s great success stories. There have been sanctuaries established to provide large quarantine facilities, where the animals could multiply and thrive free from the disease. A species previously listed as endangered has now been declared recovered. Healthy animals are now being inoculated against the disease, reintroduced to the wild, and flourishing. There is also a totally disease-free population thriving on Maria Island. Today the Tassie Devil is an iconic symbol of Tasmania, who has not only to a degree put us on the worldwide map, but many organisations, groups and products associated with Tasmania use the Tassie Devil symbol in their logos. It is seen as an important attractor of tourists to Tasmania and first came to worldwide attention when the Looney Tunes character debuted with another legend in Bugs Bunny. Here are a few facts about our iconic Tasmanian Devil (we have also included 11 gorgeous photos in this series): The Tassie Devil is incredibly well suited to its environment with a number of adaptation that allows it to fill an important niche in the environment. 1. The white blazes that appear on their chest and rump help break up their shape and assist with camouflage. 2. Their ears allows for heat dissipation and also contributed to their name as the looked like glowing horns in low light. 3. The incredibly wide gape in their jaw assist the devil with crushing bones that make up a large portion of their diet. The devil’s jaw pressure is considered one of the strongest for an animal of its size in the world. 4. The Tassie Devil is the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial. 5. The Tassie Devil's spine-chilling screeches set it apart from other wildlife.
