22.01.2022 Yep to be exact 66% of the seafood we eat is imported (Source: Australian Bureau of Agricultural & Resource Economics and Science, 2015) Can you believe that?...! I mean, if only Australia was a big island surrounded by ocean, huh!!!! Frozen, and then thawed, Basa fillets (catfish) from fish farms in Vietnam are our MOST COMMON import Make a determined effort to buy Australian Seafood? HOWEVER if you’ve ever eaten takeaway fish and chips or seafood at a restaurant or even a surf n turf at the pubWell, you’ve likely eaten imported seafood without even knowing! How? Because food services are exempt from product origin statements and allow us to unknowingly contribute to the high level of consumed imports, especially Seafood Seafood Industry Australia has campaigned the government to change this. Here is our chance to help Now, RIGHT NOW, our government is reviewing our new Country of Origin Labels (you know, those BRILLIANT labels on the back of the product that indicates the percentage of Australian ingredients ) and they are asking consumers (that’s US!) to contribute and have our say (link below). What does that mean?? It means WE have a chance to contribute to how our food is labelled and how our producers are recognised. If we do NOT participate in this discussion, we are simply telling our government we don’t care where our food comes from. But we do!! The link is below. There are 9 questions. One in particular (Q4) concerns the lack of labelling in food service sector. Your answer could be as simple as Food service should not be exempt from Country of Origin Labelling, I want mandatory origin labelling for Seafood (and of course any other industry you believe should be labelled) If it’s a bit confusing (you’re not the only one ) there is a short discussion paper (in the same link, before the survey) that explains the questions clearly. But feel free to send me a message if you need help https://consult.industry.gov.au//evaluation-of-country-of/ Also, for more info on the importance of this product origin labelling for the Seafood industry you can check this out http://seafoodindustryaustralia.com.au//country-of-origin/ Keep fighting the good fight, Swappers And remember even the fanciest of seafood platters should come with hot chips (and yes, yes, my Windows '95 Paint graphics are improving, thanks for noticing ) #maketheswap #maketheswapaustralia #eataustralianseafood @seafoodindustryaustralia
