25.01.2022 Another update on Anna. She plays quite a lot now! she's showing herself to be a sweetheart and I do find it surprising at the amount of progress she has made. Beginning to love the wand but nervous if I open the gate at the side. She's o.k. if I open the front one and will even let my hand put food in AND come to eat while it's there. Touching is next step but going slow.
23.01.2022 Baby Tiger was adopted last year from us at Catmint Cottage. He grew from a sickly 400 gram kitten to a mischievous and affectionate boy and he's seen here with Arya, no relation, they just look very similar! Arya was adopted some time earlier from a shelter and at first she wasn't having this new kid on the block, she didn't think she needed company! Baby Tiger was renamed 'Bear' and one of his favourite pastimes is watching the fishies!! he sleeps next to them at night so... he can guard them! Thank you Belle and Scott for working through the initial problems and for also supporting us with donations to help others.
22.01.2022 Picked up from a group of strays that hang out together in Fairfield, 'Ben' is very lucky to still belong to the land of the living. Bronwen, a local rescuer, saw him on Thursday and contacted me to say she was taking him in to FRVH immediately. His eyes were glued shut, he was severely dehydrated, undesexed, assume unvaccinated, positive to Feline Immune Deficiency Virus and suffering with painful lesions in his mouth and rotten infected teeth.... To help us pay for his treatment please send donations to the link below or contact us for our bank details. No amount is too small and all greatly appreciated. https://www.catmintcottagestreetcatrescue.com.au/donate.html Bronwen named him 'Ben', describing it as 'a strong male name' in the hope it would give him strength and we both prayed that he would pull through. He was anaemic with flea burden and lice to boot, his fur resembled dreadlocks, his skin raw in parts and no doubt he was full of worms. Although very weak, 'Ben' displayed surprising strength by lashing out at those trying to help him. Fluids to rehydrate , pain relief, antibiotics and blood drawn for a profile were done that first day. We were told that initially Ben's vitals took a nose dive on that first night . He is now eating and drinking, is food responsive. Ben will remain in hospital until he has his dental on Tuesday.
21.01.2022 These two girls and their mother (not pictured) are currently boarding at Fairfield Road Vet Hospital. They have been desexed and vaccinated. We also have the five kittens from one of them. They have nowhere to go at present and therein lies the problem. If there are any people on here that have property, farms, agistment situations who would take the family on (minus kittens) to be mousers and ratters please please contact me.... Other than that, the girls look young enough to socialise if given the right circumstances and people willing to do it. Born as strays, they never had a choice in life. They were fed by an elderly lady who couldn't cope with them anymore due to illness and complaints from neighbors. Margaret
21.01.2022 Heres your Ben feel-good Saturday video. Our continued thanks to Lex for all that shes doing for this deserving lad.
21.01.2022 I guess here at Street Cat Rescue and Catmint Cottage 'headquarters' , the more things change the more they stay the same. Between all of our other duties for the many in care, we continue to support lone rescuers with whom we have a relationship. We honour your donations by paying for desexing, vaccinations, treatments, finding outlets for kittens when we can and often giving emotional support. There is a whole lot of activity going on that we never get time to talk about.... The boy in these photos was recently caught by Elizabeth Treccase from a colony in Fairfield that has been on our radar for a long time. Sick cats and kittens have been taken on by our group when that could be managed, many of them close to death's door. Very close in fact. The fight to help the street cats is an ongoing one but we like any other responsible group can only pace ourselves to what we have in the bank and what we can take on in terms of care. We have paid for this boy's vaccination, his desexing, his viral test and a shot for infected wounds. He needs a dental, he is FIV+ and that means he probably needs most, if not all of his teeth out. He has bite wounds and scratches from fighting. He needs a foster carer or an adoption once he is treated because Elizabeth cannot keep bringing cats in from the streets and keeping them, except for short term help. As a trapper she is performing a vital role already. Meanwhile I am told that he is living in bliss by having a warm indoor bed and plenty of food and love. He is very friendly and he deserves no less than this. If anyone can help please hit the link or pm us for bank details. https://www.catmintcottagestreetcatrescue.com.au/donate.html Straight after dealing with the 'farm cats and kittens' and their lovely farm helpers, we were involved with a local situation; a mum cat, two of her eight month old daughters and one little boy kitten, all of which we managed to trap for desexing and vaccination. They were subsequently returned to the people who had sought to help them and to stop their numbers increasing. Mum was actually on heat again. The cats were strays they had been feeding but they sought vouchers from AWL and we arranged rescue rates for vaccinations. We have continued to support them with advice, provided medications for flu and worming, the loan of crates, lots of reassurance. We received some very nice spring rolls as a thank you gift! :)
21.01.2022 We use your donations to rescue and treat cats like Quaddie. He came to us near death with a broken jaw. His recovery was costly and we couldnt have done it without the continued help of every single one of you, our followers. We hope seeing him curled up and comfy warms your hearts.
20.01.2022 More enormous thanks to Leisa Maree, Linds and Annie from Safe Rescue for running an online auction to raise funds to buy litter for rescue groups. As recipients of a share of this we are extremely grateful. It frees up funds which can then be applied to paying vet bills. Margaret
20.01.2022 This beautiful momma cat named Pussa :) has been running the roost for a while. After turning up in the yard of Barbara, a friend of Bronwen Stade with her four kittens in tow....we don't eat much:) Mumma didn't approve of the attention they were getting (insert shocked stares) so she moved the family to under the house and said take that! They were lucky they landed on the property of a kind lady who continued to feed the family. We were called in by Bronwen and set up so...me traps nearby. Mumma didn't like that and the whole family packed their little bags and went on the road again two days later, much to our disappointment. Not too long ago Mumma or Pussa as she is now called turned up once more, this time being heavily pregnant. No sign of her last family. So we took one single trap there and left it in the back room just in case and yesterday Barbara was eating chicken for lunch, put some in the trap and heard a bang not long afterwards. Pussa was in the trap!! Bronwen alerted us and she arrived with a huge cage on wheels. We set up a big cardboard box with a nice bed and towel, cut a hole in one side and John transferred her. As a very timid and shy cat Pussa took this quite well, seemingly giving her seal of approval to the new motel style birthing unit. Now we wait :)
19.01.2022 Simba returned to our vet yesterday for a test for Toxoplasmosis. Apparently the problem with his eyes is caused by HAWS syndrome but we want to rule out Toxoplasmosis in any case. The condition of his eyes is self limiting it is believed if this is indeed HAWS. Simba's though is a particularly bad case. Mostly his eyes are fully covered by the third eye.... https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx See more
19.01.2022 And who remembers Talouse from a couple of weeks ago? When we were asked for help we arranged his vet work before taking him to a foster carer. His previous people who had been trying to find help for him came with us to settle him in. A few days later those same people realised they were grieving for him and wanted to adopt him so today he was picked up and taken home with them. Talouse is a cutie pie who winds humans round his little paws :)
18.01.2022 Apologies for the terrible looking photo but we still don't have any to update with as yet. Ben had his dental on Monday, is eating, drinking, doing everything normal but now really needs a home where he can get some TLC. We are told he can come out of hospital tomorrow and are trying to cobble together a short term foster carer or an adoption. Having experience with street cats would help a lot, experience with the kinds of health and behaviour issues and the patience to go... with it are all things we would define as being optimal. We are told that Ben is now friendly, at least he is while on the pain relief so we would hope that continues. Meanwhile I'm told that Mickey, the dark grey boy, had his dental yesterday and is on the mend with Elizabeth Treccase. Mickey needs a home asap. He's a FIV+ boy also, extremely chatty and friendly! Donations that came in have been much appreciated. We are attempting to stretch the money out to pay for yet another dental for a rescued cat and have vaccinated three street cats, desexed two more, yes it doesn't seem to end. Most of all we really really want to thank the people who are supporting us, It is through you that these cats are not out in a cold winter windy night like tonight, suffering with such awful conditions. Many many thanks. <3 you all. Margaret x
18.01.2022 Pictured are three of our young rescues getting ready to go on the adoption platform. All three were rescued as very sick kittens. Charlotte is a sweet natured girl with markings that make her look startled. She has an endearing characteristic of sleeping with her paw over her eyes. It is the 'do not disturb' sign.... Rescued from a litter of three during the January Summer of 2019 as four week olds, these girls were in a state of collapse. Charlottes sisters have been adopted, Charlotte had an adoption trial some months ago but circumstance evolved that we felt she was vulnerable to so we brought her back. Jet Black is a large! boy only around ten months of age. He is very affectionate and we have problems still calling him a kitten! Jet Black came in as part of another litter last Christmas. He had the worst case of Ringworm I had ever seen! his little body was riddled with sores, he was underweight, undernourished and full of worms. In effect both he and his sister next to him were lucky to survive. Phantom (of the opera) got stuck with that name because she used to scream blue murder (not very operatic!) when I handled her to treat her. I have a very big soft spot for this girl, she has improved so much in her demeanour over the past few months and when I pick her up and sweet talk her before putting her to bed, she looks into my eyes and begins to purr. Margaret
17.01.2022 Anita is raising more funds for us and the work we do. We owe her so many thanks and what lovely items she is posting. I can feel. the Christmas Spirit seeping in. <3 Many thanks Anita.
17.01.2022 Featuring Dexter...like the song says...'if that old gang of mine could see me now!' Dexter appeared in the street as a stray some couple of months back. Elizabeth Treccase took him home and appealed for donations to help him so we took him on. His makeover has been considerable. A dental with quite a few extractions, Entropian surgery for his eyes, vaccination, microchipping, Viral testing (yes he's FIV+) desexing, another sedation to groom his dreadlocks with a deep clean...! Dexter is available for adoption now. He's super friendly and affectionate. Please pm or comment for details. Chip number is coming. See more
16.01.2022 Update on Pussa! she is the proud mum of these gorgeous kittens and this time we know where they are! Pussa is getting used to domesticity!
16.01.2022 The beautiful 'twins' Sparrow and Cricket with Jet Black and Phantom are four of the thirteen kitten intakes from last Christmas. Cricket had Pneumonia with ongoing breathing problems from severe inflammation in her pharynx, reason she made chirping noises like a cricket for some time. Jet Black and Phantom were from another litter. Jet was the scrawniest most Ringworm inflicted kitten with diarrhoea and worm infestation we had ever seen. His three siblings were not much ...better. Phantom, sister to Jet Black used to scream blue murder when handled. Yesterday she sat on my lap and purred. So there you go, there's hope for us all. All four are ready for adoption now, are ten months old and all vetwork completed. Margaret
16.01.2022 Ben has had a busy week and so have we. On Tuesday night his foster carer Lex asked if he could come back in for a checkup. She was concerned about his breathing. So on Wednesday morning Bronwen went up to Hazelbrook, collected him and we met them at the surgery. Ben had X-rays on his lungs, there was no fluid in them which was our fear but there was evidence of some infection in the tubes. So he was given antibiotics to take back home with him and Bronwen volunteered to... take him back up. I bet she slept well that night! Last night Lex became concerned again about him making noises while breathing so John and I did the trip, brought him back to see Donna and he is now in hospital for a couple of days observation while he is treated with an anti inflammatory and antibiotics. Ben also has a heart murmur, not sure what grade as yet. He needs Entropian surgery also on his eyes so maybe we can swing the two together. He sure is cute though. We wish to thank Lex for taking care of him so well and for contacting us with her concerns so quickly. Donations can still be made to help Ben with his medical needs. Please contact us if you would like to do that. Margaretxx https://www.catmintcottagestreetcatrescue.com.au/donate.html Or contact us for bank details. Photo is of Donna, our amazing vet from @FRVH looking through his blood results.
15.01.2022 Meet Tilley and Liz. We support Liz with her stray cats. Tilley is around 13 now and needs regular help.
14.01.2022 I can feel the itchy feet starting to be interested :). Might need a bigger bus though :)
14.01.2022 UPDATE ON MICKEY, thank you to those who donated. We have managed to accrue most of the costs through this and will be able to add some of our own. Mickey will have a blood test and a dental. See below. * * * * Some more information on our street cat. He's been roaming the streets for some time, not desexed, not microchipped and not vaccinated. He was called Mickey by his feeder and he's estimated to be around seven years of a...ge. We have paid for the desexing, vaccination, viral test, antibiotic shot for injuries and Elizabeth has him in care. He needs a dental fairly urgently, he is drooling. We would like to do a blood test too. Donations are tax deductible and small amounts will still help us. He needs a lap indoors somewhere as well so if you can provide that even short term please step up. Cost estimate is $550.00 https://www.catmintcottagestreetcatrescue.com.au/donate.html
14.01.2022 Ramina Yalda has very generously set up a gofundme for her birthday to assist us in the rescue work we do. Many thanks for thinking of us Ramina.xxx
14.01.2022 Revisiting our beautiful ex street cat named Frankie in her forever home. After a lifetime on the streets of Cabramatta N.S.W, having borne numerous litters that reportedly died in infancy, Frankie was rescued while heavily pregnant and just like our Mimi, her last litter was born in domesticity and survived. Frankie had six kittens, all beautiful babies, all soon adopted out. This time the little family were fed high quality food and Frankie was able to regain her health and... all her kittens survived. Frankie flew to Tasmania and landed on all four feet with Martin Connelly. Martin told me last night that Frankie loves cheese and the minute she hears him with the cheese she becomes a smoochy opportunist!! Many thanks to our member Linda and Uncle for the rescue, care and nurture of this girl. And her kittens I should add! I know it is no mean feat to look after a mum and kittens. Margaret
13.01.2022 An update on Ben, settling in to his foster home and looking pretty dapper. Hey lady! Come back! Did I say stop with the head rubs?
13.01.2022 Say hello to Quaddie. He's the former street cat that came in near death with a broken jaw. Hes currently doing it tough with one of our valued foster carers and committee members, Tu.
12.01.2022 Here is the update on Ben we have all been waiting for. Thank you Bronwen Stade for everything you did for him. Thank you to all our supporters for giving us the means of paying his bills. Ben was taken home from the surgery on Saturday. He was initially very depressed both in the surgery and at home with Bronwen.... This morning she told me he is a total lap cat and is purring on her lap! Ben will now go to a foster carer in the Blue Mountains so that he can get stronger and will be put up for adoption when that point comes. Meanwhile, enjoy these photos!
12.01.2022 Who's still hiring in the middle of a global pandemic and 6 week lockdown in Melbourne? Cats in Boxes, that's who. Meet Meaghan Meowkle, Signorina Fellini's new assistant. How do we fit in? Well Meaghan is one of our girls! She was one of the first cats rescued by our hard working committee member and foster carer, Linda, right here in Sydney. Meaghan has seen many of her fellow rescue friends find their new homes and she's often wondered when it would be her turn. Little ...did she know that she would be chosen by SF to help her with her worldwide box empurrrire. MM had to be flown to Melbourne because of the lockdown, and we've all had several months of planning and waiting, and keeping all paws and fingers crossed that the fight wouldn't be cancelled. MM arrived safely in Melbourne last Tuesday. Our thanks to Jetpets and Linda. Happy life Meaghan Meowkle! We look forward to seeing you on social media! See more
12.01.2022 We have had a very busy week, two events from left field to deal with but more on that at a later time. I have not had lots of time to work with the girls and Pepper still greets me with flat ears and a growl. That's o.k. Once the wand comes in to view, she seems to settle and enjoy what is happening. I haven't done much work on Penny but did so today and was amused to see Pepper turn around to watch her reaction.... I am told that Pickles is the mum of both girls. I don't know if true but if so she is mum to them and was mum to the five kittens also.#
11.01.2022 Tilley is the sweet girl on our header. We have financed Tilley's health issues for the past few years and she's very lucky that she landed in Liz's yard. Tilley has lung problems that need fairly regular medications. She had all her teeth out a few years back. We were also able to provide donated food which was donated to us and we can pass it on to those doing it tough. In Liz's neck of the woods there are many strays. In the other pic are a mum and her two daughters,... all of which SCR has been able to desex, vaccinate, viral test etc and give back to Liz to look after, a job she does very well. Donated funds are the tool that we use to keep working on things like this. Please consider a small monthly donation to keep us keeping on. Ask us how.
11.01.2022 Our boy Ben has arrived at his foster home and charmed the pants off Lex his new human! Could this be the fastest foster fail ever? Well keep you updated. Thank you Lex, we know Ben appreciates all your care and attention.
10.01.2022 The purpose of donations we receive through any format is used to treat, rescue, re home, desex and vaccinate cats that live vulnerable lives in street colonies. Some of these cats display injuries that were inflicted upon them. like Buster, who was burned. Others have come in near death, like Ben. Or starving for a regular meal they did not have to steal, and a safe place to call home, like Mr. Dickens.... Cats that are kindly fed by people can be burdened by fleas, lice, worms and be literally walking skeletons with rotten teeth, pain and such a huge fear of humans that they have to be trapped to be treated, like Sandy. Sandy, who now has a safe place and regular nutritious meals, the company of other cats that he does not have to fight. Some like Cathy and Carla were abandoned by their owner to live on the street and be fed inappropriate diets they were meant to be thankful for. Or Faith who lived with others in an abandoned house, suffering malnutrition, driven to produce litter after litter and suffering from mammaryCancer which had metastasised to her lungs. It's just such a huge job in our neck of the woods. We have to pace ourselves to continue to rescue these forgotten souls but to stay upright ourselves and to work with what money is available and to assist others that work alone. Donations through any form are invaluable and always used for this work. We just can't thank our supporters enough! Anita Coad has had first hand experience on the difficulties of rescue. We are indebted to you and all who contribute. Margaret
08.01.2022 Scarlett...or Scary Spice as I still call her. Now seven years of age and overlooked for adoption. She is a most pleasant girl who came from the pound, rescued with her half sister just in the nick of time as a terrified kitten. Some months ago she went on a trial adoption but was returned after two days. Yet she never missed a meal, allowed the adult daughter to pat her and was described by her as 'a beautiful cat.' Scarlett should have been confined in a small area or ...a crate (we did provide one) until she relaxed but that wasn't done. Scarlett deserves more love and attention than she gets here. I live in hope that she will find an understanding person in the future. We offer a two week trial and provide you with personalised support to make sure you and the kitty are happy together Adoption Fee: $175 includes lifetime registration Microchip Number: 900012000364281
08.01.2022 World Cat Day. Are the humans trying to be funny? Every day is cat day. #catsoftheworld #worldcatday
07.01.2022 Anita Coad is working hard to raise funds for us so that we can direct the money to the rescue, vetting and care of cats we are helping. These cats are strays from the streets and often they come to us in.a very poor state. Many thanks to Anita who continues to rescue cats by proxy :) There are some lovely items here! Margaretx
07.01.2022 Today we took Charlie, one of the Catmint cats in care, in to see Donna and whilst there went to visit Ben. Ben is the sweetest little boy, doesn't look very old but difficult to tell apparently due to having had rotten teeth and a mouth full of ulcers. No teeth left now. The vetnurse held Ben up for me to take a photo. I took a few but some are blurry and the flash made him close his eyes.... My photographer assistant said he hisses but never lashes out, is eating like a horse and is so very much better now. Ben needs a lot of love to make up for what he went through on the streets. How could this happen? it breaks our hearts to think of it but unfortunately far too common. Ben will be available for adoption to the right home, is in need of a foster carer from tomorrow. He is at Fairfield Road Vet Hospital in Guildford West NSW. Margaret
07.01.2022 I SAID no more photos!! Cricket being disturbed by my camera :)
06.01.2022 A huge thank you to Breeders Choice cat litter and to Leisa Maree being the go between for this donation to our rescue. Whilst our small team is over employed in rescuing cats and assisting others to do the same, having the support of companies like this and people like Leisa is invaluable. Many many thanks.
06.01.2022 These two lovelies were trapped by us very recently and returned to the yard of where they were living after being desexed and vaccinated. They were part of a family of four. The mum of these two was on heat again. Two were eight month old sisters, one of which is seen here with her little brother of four months.... The people are very caring so we helped out by loaning a crate for recovery. They want to keep them in the yard but are having problems working out how to enclose part of it. If anyone is handy with this sort of thing maybe you could offer some help? Fairfield area.
06.01.2022 Is there anyone who hasn’t done this?
05.01.2022 Stuck home in isolation? When you rescue cats, youll never drink alone again. Photo credit: unknown #redwine #winelover #wineoclock
05.01.2022 Doesnt this lovely photo of Ben just epitomise why we do this work. Our boy looks into the eyes of his foster carer Lex for the first time, and knows hes finally home.
04.01.2022 This lil guy is Garfield. He is one of 5 kittens which mumma cat Lily gave birth to a few weeks ago. Lily was rescued off the streets of Cabramatta when she was heavily pregnant. Lily and Garfield's siblings have been doing very well. She has been chowing down on Royal Canin Mother and babycat canned food - and kitties have started on it too. Garfield, on the otherhand, hasn't been able to compete for a feed against his bigger brothers and sisters so we've had to intervene. W...e've been supplementing him by giving him sub-q fluids to keep him well hydrated, probiotics to treat his diarrhea and special recovery food. He started off eating only 0.5ml of recovery food in one sitting to now eating 6ml of food - that's a great improvement. He still has a long way to go, but he's on his way to becoming a healthy bigger kitten. Donations are appreciated to help us continue to support growing hungry families like Lily's and care for lil ones like Garfield to give him the best chance in life.
04.01.2022 It is with great appreciation and honour that we receive the donation from Crafts for Paws this month in memory of this lovely lady. Seems to me that she is still working to help save the animals. <3
04.01.2022 We are extremely pleased to announce that Chloe is joining the family of Belle and Scott, sister to Bear (aka Baby Tiger) and Arya. Chloe has been desexed, vaccinated, viral tested and microchipped today by our vet and is now back home with her Mum and Dad. Thank you for rescuing this little girl from the street and for giving her a home.
03.01.2022 Talouse was taken to FRVH last week and added to our account to have his vet work done. He was desexed, vaccinated, viral tested, chipped, came home to us for one night before we took him to his foster carer at Gladesville. Talouse has been looked after by Tabee and her mum as much as possible and they came with us to help him settle at the foster carers place. An adoption is planned in the future for this boy. ... Please help us to keep working on the at risk cats by setting up a monthly donation. Ten dollars a month is a wonderful way of helping us. Ask us how :) See more
03.01.2022 Phoenix is a two year old male who we rescued as an eight week old. (Photo in the comments). He came extremely close to death with massive flu infection and an abscess on his shoulder. The abscess was treated but left him with a lame leg. When he runs you would not be able to tell the difference. He rumbles the other cats, is a cheerful affectionate boy that I ended up hand raising with a bottle, starting on Christmas Eve. He came to Christmas dinner with us to our son's house where he fed and slept in that order (a bit like us). Last year he needed some teeth out, a probably result of his bad start in life. Phoenix is available for adoption now. His microchip number is 991003000268942
02.01.2022 Happy Sunday everyone! This here is lil miss Daisy and her friend Autumn. Daisy and Autumn are both young kitties who have grown up in Cabramatta where they were regularly fed as part of a small cat colony. Today is an exciting day for them... They will be going to a foster carer which means they will no longer live on the streets and need to fend for themselves. Lucky girls. We'll let Daisy and Autumn settle in to their new home and once ready, they'll be available for adop...tion. Also, a big thank you to Olivia and her partner for offering to become foster pawwrents - I'm sure you'll show them the many joys of living in a home and having hooman servants. *Happy dance* Tu
02.01.2022 One of the situations from left field last week was the return of Simba. I was contacted by the people we vetted him for last year, asking for help. I was not impressed to say the least but in further talks it appears that Simba is a bit of a free spirit and refuses to stay indoors or on the property. He also went missing for a period of time and came back looking like this. Apparently they are dealing with a stray cat problem in that street and have had difficulty coping... with sick kittens being born to an uncatchable mother and daughter. We have promised to help by loaning traps and showing them what to do. Meanwhile John went to collect Simba once he had been secured in the house. Surprisingly he has been well fed by whoever had him, his body condition is very good, he is very happy although at this stage blind. The cause is his third eyelid which is covering both eyes. There is a tiny bit of eye showing at times right at the top corners. He spent two days in hospital, was sedated so that our vet Donna could have a better look and nothing was obvious. He had a blood test which was mostly normal with only one red marker. He was wormed twice as apparently intestinal issues can cause this too. He was FIV tested and is negative. He is currently at ours, crated. We are taking him back for another blood test for Toxoplasmosis. If positive we can treat that with antibiotics. If negative we wait a few weeks to see if it resolves on it's own as has happened with other cats on record apparently. If it doesn't we move into the area of a specialist consult. Once Simba is better we need a foster carer or an adaptor to take him on. He needs to be protected from his wandering ways. If anyone can donate to help us with Simba please contact us for our bank numbers or go here: https://www.catmintcottagestreetcatrescue.com.au/donate.html
