24.01.2022 Do BJJ it's good for self defence. Bullshit Yes it will help you move on the ground, wrestle an opponent or deal with some holds.... It will develop you movement and grappling skills. But in its current form sports combat it is not a self defence. And right now there are hundreds of people saying shut up you dont know what you are talking about. You should do BJJ for self defence. Dont get me wrong BJJ is a worthy sport. How do I know, I have been training in it for 17 years at least twice a week (often more) i teach it 4 times a week and hold a purple belt under Adam Metcalf of the Academy of Mixed Martial Arts in Balcatta Western Australia. I love it its like a game of 3D multi level chess. Moves can be made and then countered. So what's wrong with it as a self defence - it has aspects we use in self defence but it has rules and limitations. Here are a few * You can't run away * You can't use weapons * You can't strike, kick, scratch or bite * You end up on the ground * You only fight one at a time * Your training area is flat and padded * You try to gain points by advancing position * You try to get you partner submit to show he's in danger and you could have severely hurt him * You fight one on one until someone taps and you restart Yes originally it was designed to deal with an attacking opponent that may be punching or kicking, but the training reflected that. Okay your opponent pushes you to the ground, then tries to mount and punch you in the head. So you learnt breakfalls, use guard to stop them getting on top or how to cover up to avoid the blows raining down on your skull. And how to escape the mount without getting your head caved in. MMA came along, and we used jui jitsu to control the person and BJJ took less of the street survival. And more sport feel. I know that in reality my opponent passes guard then would look to score and punch me in the face. But I am in the BJJ class so NO punches thrown, no problem All I have to do is stop him from getting on top. And we start playing the game. I have 9 or 10 escapes from stopping someone next to me getting the dominate position on top mount position. If it was MMA I might use 3 because the other 6 result in me eating a knuckle sandwich. Learn BJJ for Self Defence. No Learn Self Defence for Self Defence and ask them to show you how to escape locks and holds, get out of the grapple and what to do if you end up on the ground. Its a totally different game. One which we will explore in the next posts. Only a small fracture of BJJ will deal with this. Stay tuned and Stay SAFE.

23.01.2022 Your BJJ (brazillian jiu jitsu) is crap So, I see people say is oh I am in a arm bar oh I will just bite them or poke them in the eye Do you know what my coach said, if I have you in an arm bar and you bite me I will still break your arm True you are on the ground in their domain, like stepping in the ring against a boxer or into court against a lawyer.... The odds are not in your favour if you play their game. Don’t box the boxer, don’t wrestle a wrestler and don’t ground fight a BJJer. We teach people to survive on the ground We teach hitting, gouging, shredding, bicycle kicks and get up and go. So, I went looking for people defending against wrestlers and BJJ. If you wrestle with them in their field of battle you are going to lose, if you are striking hitting and ripping their eyes out, then you have a better chance. And only if you don’t stop, you keep going until you can safely escape, no quarter given. You do not want to give them a chance to use their skills. They have been training at it a lot longer and are more proficient. It’s not a wrestling match, there are no rules, no ref and most likely if you are wrestling on the ground with them, they are aiming to sexually assault or rape you. And I tested it, I had beginners do our ground survival stuff while I and several high level BJJ practitioners wrestle them. Many of the said we would have resorted to striking or pulling away as was the devastating result I wrestled people and looked for the opportunity to stick fingers in eyes. I had other do the same. Yes, it is a skill to develop, but I am not teaching them BJJ, I am showing them ground survival, so they can go home safely. Don’t get me wrong, you need to be explosive and rake and rip and don’t stop. Cause if they get you in an arm bar they are likely to break you arm, even if you find they eyes. I witness beginners, dealing with larger and better skilled opponents, when I attend my friends at RSDA (Reality Self Defence Australia) run a basic seminar for beginners, that included utilising the skill taught on the ground. I have had beginners defend a full ground assault against a full padded purple belt trying to control and apply submissions and punch them in the head. We teach a different skill set for a different situation. Yes, if you play their game you are going to lose, yes you could get injured. But you body and life are worth fighting for. We apply different strategy to give you the edge, even slight one. Be aware, avoid and apply shredder.

18.01.2022 When your solution is wrong. I remember when I first started training at AMMA. The coaches were looking for some sparring partners for some fighters. I thought hey yeah I'll give it a go, it was going to light/ medium sparring working on their cardio. I am in good shape, done some martial arts for 8-9 years and I dont mind a bit a sparring. But heres the catch I was coming from a Karate background, but this kick boxing rules. We never dealt with kicks to the legs, th...at wasnt in the the karate rulez. Now I couldnt complain about the rules, I was in a the squared circle and rules were kicks to the legs allowed. Now you dont need to be a genius or go to heaps of classes to realise that you need to stop some one kicking you in leg and if your skills aint cutting it, do something else. So each time they would kick my leg, I would rise my knee to block with my shin. It stopped some, some hurt but it did stop them from smashing my leg most of the time.. After sparring I was humble enough to ask how to block the thigh kick. So off to a few muay thai classes. What has that got to do with BJJ and Self defence. You skills could be top notch, but use the wrong skills in the wrong place and you may not make it home. Bjj is kinda like a games of chess. Self defence is like a game of ludo. Both have a board, pieces and their own set of techniques and a whole different outcome. You dont want to be playing chess on the ludo board, even through the queen is all powerful and moves in any direction. She is thwarted if the dice say you cant enter the board. In BJJ you can only wrestle, you can't run away, no strike, kicks or dirty tactics and your aim is to accumulate points or submit you opponent. In self defence its to get home safely. In self defence I only use 6-8 concepts of BJJ. We will examine them in the next post. In ground survival what should I use. I can hear people say BJJ has hundreds of moves and for self defence you are only using 6. How on earth are you going to get home with that. I partnered with you in the BJJ class on Saturday and the coach covered 5 techniques and multiple concepts and now saying can protect yourself on the ground with only 8 BJJ chess moves. Yes added with self defence ludo tactics.

14.01.2022 The goal in self defence is to get home safely. The goal in BJJ is to control your opponent, score points and submit your opponent. That two very different goals... BJJ there mats, refs, time limits, rules, illegal moves and if you are in danger of your arm breaking or you are being choked unconscious you can tap out and opponent lets go or the ref steps in to stop the fight. Can BJJ help in you in grappling situations Yes You know how to move, you can use this knowledge to escape, get away and go home. However this is not your training, you are not trained to escape and run. You train to escape and advance position. Why in Bjj if you run away you are penalised with warning, point awarded against you or even disqualified. I am starting to see it more and more even in things like Krav Maga (Israeli self defence) that more and more BJJ is sneaking in. People say you get here then do mount arm bar or triangle choke. Pictured below. What the Hell, thats not escaping and surviving. That BJJ - combat sport. And in BJJ that's your goal Bad spots on the street, vulnerable to attackers from others, concert is hard when you fall on it and open to an assault case as you didnt disengage and escape, you ripped their bloody arms off and now you have to deal with their lawyers. BJJ is not self defence, the basic principles and movements in BJJ can assist self defence, but you need training in street usage. We will be looking at this in follow up posts

13.01.2022 my friends rich and chris explain this very well

10.01.2022 So lets go to Wimbleton. So now I have only three responses for edge weapon attack. There is only three possible outcomes for me. 1. Run 2. Baseball bat grip... 3. 2 on 1 This is my primary go-to moves how do we get there 1. Avoiding 2. Blocking 3. Passing 4. Striking We dont care what angle, what grip or craxzy combos We are ready, having drilled the forehand, backhand, serve , volley, fitness and application. We have played in the local tournaments, A-grade, state comps, national league and heading to worlds championship So what do we do once we do our three responses - run, baseball bat grip or 2 on 1. 1. Escape 2. Grab equalizer 3. Repeat the above if secondary attack 4. Command - verbal tactics like drop the knife 5.Control - to arresting positions, takedown or slam into objects 6. Knees 7. Short sharp hammerfists 8. I-shred - see Richard Dimtri's THE SHREDDER including Biting (no not vampires, think puppy nips) 9. Switch to one of the other 3 - got baseball bat grip switch to 2 on 1 or run How do we get there. We take a leaf out of military, elite sports and other learning avenues. 1. Isolate - here how to do baseball bat grip 2. Implement - heres how to do baseball bat grip from a high block. 3. Intergrate - here how to use it with your other skills from a straight thrust, downward plunge, sewing machine stabbing or threat to neck with blocking , passing and striking. Then we layer this in with other skills, problem solving and pressure drills. Then we rep it out until its a default setting where you don't think about it. Like being in the zone or going with the flow.

10.01.2022 this is a awesome awareness game

09.01.2022 My good friend Julian from Safe international perth is holding a 3 hours self protection workshop on Saturday the 3rd November Stay safe by learning life saving skills... https://www.facebook.com/events/1166810976825160/

07.01.2022 Out on injury spend hours watching cctv and phone footage of fights, pub brawls, street attacks and party beatings. Weapons were often pulled on people, it surprised them almost as many times as the sucker punch (but thats another story) Three things usually happened... bad guys brought weapons bad guys discover a weapon in battle or bad guy took weapon away from defender And in 9 out of 10 times the weapon was used immediately, was used savagely, was used to turn the tide of the fight or aid the bad guys escape. Knifes, bats and hammers most commonly brought weapon, often concealed from defender. remember if you cant see both hands assume weapon and assume its a blade. It often was, it often was deployed without the defender seeing. Then a rapid assault of multiple strikes, slashes or stabs. Impact weapon most commonly found weapon. Bottles, bricks, glasses and chairs most easily accessed weapon. Not hard to imagine, you are at a bbq with friends or christmas party table chairs in your back yard, people drinking put their beer down to say hello, bit of back yard cricket happening on a tea break while everyone get another cold one, tables of chips dips and empty bottles. These are weapons of opportunity. You push someone against the table, next things he swinging a beer bottle at your head. Its there. and in a ego driven world where people dont like to lose, getting an equalizer or advantage people with take it every time Attacks with weapon were frenzied and savage. Non stop pummelling of defender, overwhelming hastly erected weak defenses. Defender that had weapons, often presented the weapon out front, like a shield, and not a very strong barrier. Allowed attacker to grab or brush it aside. There is a funny things that occurs with human, once they grab something they dont like to let go. So they hang out they beer bottle, try talking (dont get me wrong talking and descalatiing is an extremely good idea) It not strong, its not guarded and they have no idea how to use it, even in the most primive way. Its either snatched from hand or push aside as the attack enters in their zone and smashes them in the face. Or the defender gets weapon and has no idea how to use it. Loop a big arm over and try to smash it on their head or use it incorrectly like they get a bat and swing it like a bat. Taking out the lamp, hitting the wall or tangled in the curtain, xmas tree or light fixture. Brawlers dont train tkd or judo, they grab it and let it rip. caveman style and the keep beating you until you are unconscious, someone pulls them away or the cops/security show up and they leg it. And they do it like they have trained everyday with it and often the used it more than the defender.

05.01.2022 Now I have been back to ISR Matrix many times. Yes its the same course, its that good. The second time I participate in the course it felt like the attackers were moving in slow motion or fighting in treacle. I said to the instructor have them go hard. They are he said. He showed me the vision it was hard and fast and several of the guys had instructions to take my head off.... So how does this fit into knife defense. I ask the instructor about it. He explained that this course is about the physical management. And because a lot of the first course is design to showcase this to law enforcement and security groups. The physical management course is complete. Also the jumping of point for all the other modules. So he goes through a little, hold on its the same moves used a slightly different way in slight different environment. He tells me that they are ready to teach the other module to civilians yet. Having shown some snap shots. I actually had lots of conversations about it and he was happy to share, just not in the basic platform seminar, yes I understand. He points me to STAB and Red Zone. I look them up, hold on here its the same moves. Applied to knife defense. and he was correct the basic physical management course was the jumping off point, not because the moves then change. No because the moves need to be understood. And with that the fusion of what I had merged with the most simplest system. What I had is now used to get only 3 solutions. Only 3, yep regardless of the type of attack or angle of attack. I just go to 3 places. Thats what makes its so effective. Its effectiveness is based in its simplicty. We line up for the championship matches now

05.01.2022 Lets have a look at ground defence and ground survival In ground defence you are on the floor they are still standing There is like four basic things they can do, kick at your legs, footy kick you in the side or head, stomp body or head and punch you.... In ground survival both you and your opponent are on the floor and there is 2 thing he can do. Ground and pound - pin you down, kneel on you and/or the floor and punch, kick elbow and knee or just straight wrestle you. Now I only have two things to do, ok three 1. Bicycle kick 2. Shredder 3 Get up Okay I hear you say that not BJJ, no this is self protection So which BJJ moves are we using 1. Breakfalls - keep you safe when you hit the floor, good for trips and falls 2. Rolls - as above 3. Hip escapes - basic movement on the floor 4. Top control 5. Bridge and roll mount escape 6 Basic understanding of guard passing What where the arm bars, the triangles, the berimbolo, de la riva guard, figure fours, take downs and cross lapel choke. We dont need them, you do need them in a BJJ match, their counters to other moves. Not required to defend yourself. What we add in is 1. Ball defence 2. Shell and cover defence 3. Elbows 4. Knees 5. Hammerfist 6. Shredder 7. Bicycle kicks 8. Tactical get ups Remember I am trying to go home safetly, and I am playing self defence ludo not BJJ Chess Know if you have BJJ training you will find that you know and have trained the BJJ/wrestling moves so its easier for you to do. What you need is the self defence that most BJJ clubs have removed to more sport orientated. It take time and training to deal with attacks on the ground. BJJ practicators have an advantage. In knowing how to move. But they dont practice against hits, footy kicks to head or multiple attackers. Two different realms.

03.01.2022 People with Bjj come up with BJJ solutions (not alone karate come up with karate solutions and kung fu uses kung fu ideas) So BJJ is about control and submitting you opponent. Using wrestling and grappling skills. As I have already mentioned this is not a put down of BJJ. I hold a Purple belt in BJJ and still training, (not as much as I would like as I am recovering from shoulder and knee injury.) The problem I have BJJ saying it's for self defence then teaching BJJ.... For example Hair grab BJJ solution learn to do a guard arm bar. Yes the technique can be used. But why is it being used? and is it the most effective escape? So then I hear everyone out there say but what happens if someone tackles you and you find yourself on the ground wrestling around. Will BJJ help? Yes it will. Self Defence is not a boxing match or wrestling comp. Objective now is stop the person hurting you, stop them getting in a dominant position, breaking dominant position, get up off the ground safely, getting the hell out of there and going home. So someone grabs you hair, what if you strike and attack the attacker, not go to the ground. What if I am on the ground, cover up to avoid getting hit, move position to where you can kick or hit, move to a position you can get up off the ground and run away. Thats very different, use of skills and yes we will use same BJJ techniques and concepts, but we have a different outcome. Next time i will deal with on the ground and wrestling and how to use BJJ

01.01.2022 Less is more I don’t have 3 plus years, with 4 classes a week to teach you to be a blue belt BJJer (Brazilian jui jitsu) To be a blue belt in BJJ you need to learn and master 70-90 moves... You need to be able to get to the right position, do the move and learn to problem solve under pressure. And to your need roughly 10000 repetitions. If you did 2 classes a week for 50 weeks on average we teach 3 techniques a lesson, you practice each one 10 -30 times, the lesson are similiar for the week so you get 60 to 80 chance to improve you have learnt roughly 50 moves in 4 months lets say we repeat the same techniques every 4 months however you only retain 10 moves of those 50 and use only about 5, until you get enough reps throughs. Then you start to Wrestle (applying what you know). I have great a mount bar but seem to be caught in everyone’s guard, So now you are spending time learning to pass the guard, but my mount arm bar is invincible. Yes I got some neebie white belt, bingo I am on top and mount arm bar is perfect. Switch partners and the big guy who got me squashed into a small package, is not letting do my super awesome mount arm bar, First you learn to survive all submissions from guard, learn not to get swept and then learn to pass, however class may be focused on mount attacks. You learn some stuff by experience and necessity. Welcome to wonderful world of BJJ, and you start master the guard pass, side control and hold the mount and now you can apply your arm bar, its not working well people are starting to defend it. But you are growing but it taken 6 months. Now we start running into body types, personality, personal preferences and game play. When I first started learnt BJJ I was white most people I wrestled with were bigger than me and blue belts. So I developed a guard game in order to combat them, guard stopped them getting on top, but that was a lot of work to get to that level. Lots of getting beaten, tapping out, starting again, refining moves, learning counters and timing. Now switch to self defence, I am not looking to rack up points or submit my partner. I am looking to get out, get up and go home. I also don’t have to play only legal BJJ techniques Yes you need a basic understanding of ground tactics and basic BJJ moves. Can I hit him?, can I kick him?, can I elbow him?, can I knee him? can I rip his face off?. This is simple moves, now we train to apply this from any position. So I teach you ground survival in 8-10 hours not 3 years. Remember I am not sending someone to the world BJJ championships, different training required. Stay safe, and tune in for ground survival meets BJJ practicitor. Now what.
