25.01.2022 The Festive season brings about a large increase in household waste to our Materials Recovery Facility in Portsmith. Don't forget to place your recyclables in the correct bin, and remember that excess cardboard, paper and glass can be dropped off at the Transfer Station for free.

23.01.2022 Drop off green waste for free Cairns region residents are invited to get ready for the upcoming wet season by clearing excess vegetation and dropping it off for... free at one of Council’s waste transfer stations. The annual pre-cyclone season free green waste disposal will be available to residents of the Cairns region from 31 October until 8 November. Domestic green waste including tree clippings, palm fronds and grass clippings, will be accepted free of charge at waste transfer stations. Cleaning up your yard before the wet season can reduce the risk of cyclone debris as well as potential dengue breeding sites, Mayor Bob Manning said. It’s important that garden waste is disposed of correctly. Dumping green waste in drains or areas where it can be washed into drains can cause blockages that can lead to flooding during heavy rain. Green waste can be dropped off at the following locations: Portsmith Transfer Station, 7 days 8.30am to 5.15pm Smithfield Transfer Station, Monday-Saturday 7am to 5.15pm, Sunday 9am to 5.15pm Gordonvale Transfer Station, 7 days 8.30am to 5.15pm Babinda Transfer Station, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8.30am to 4.45pm Please note: this offer is only for domestic cars, utilities and/or trailers and light trucks (vehicle weight to GVM 4 tonnes). Normal rates apply for disposal of any other waste during this period, including green waste from garden maintenance contractors on behalf of residents. Green waste dropped at waste transfer stations will be mulched and offered back to the community at a later date. See more

21.01.2022 Garden mulch will be made available to residents free of charge from Cairns Regional Council’s waste transfer stations next week. The annual pre-wet season giveaway follows the recent free green waste disposal period, provided to help residents clean up their yards. The green waste delivered to our waste transfer stations has been shredded and is ready to be offered back to residents, Mayor Bob Manning said.... We’re currently under Level 1 water restrictions with the hot, dry weather likely to continue. Mulching your garden helps to hold in moisture for longer so you don’t need to water as often. Mulch will be available from the following locations from Friday 9 December until Monday 12 December or until supplies run out. Portsmith Transfer Station, daily 8.30 am to 5.15pm Smithfield Transfer Station, Monday to Saturday 7am to 5.15pm, Sunday 9am to 5.15pm Gordonvale Transfer Station, daily 8.30am to 5.15pm Mulch is available from Babinda Waste Transfer Station upon request. Please phone 4044 3044 to arrange collection. Please note that mulch consists of shredded green waste that has not been cured and quality cannot be guaranteed, as it may contain weed species and non-organic remnants. Mulch is for domestic use only and can be collected via utility, trailer or light truck up to 4 tonnes maximum GVM. For more information on how to help your garden survive and thrive through the dry, visit Cairns Regional Council’s website or download the Survive & Thrive app. - See more at: http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au//media-r/releases/free-mulch
20.01.2022 Did you know that household items such as fridges, washing machines, air-conditioners, barbecues and lawnmowers could be dropped off free of charge at our waste... transfer stations? Anything with recoverable scrap metal can be recycled, which reduces the amount of waste going to landfill. Check out our website for more info on what items can be accepted at our waste facilities. http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/water-waste-r/waste/facilities See more

15.01.2022 Pick up free sandbags, mulch Wet season preparations will get a helping hand next week, when sandbags and garden mulch are made available free to Cairns region ...residents. Free sandbags and sand will be made available for collection from waste transfer stations to help residents to be prepared for the possibility of wet season flooding. Being prepared for the wet season is everyone’s responsibility and by offering free sandbags in this early part of the season, we’re making sure residents are on the front foot, Mayor Bob Manning said. Many people wait until a cyclone is on its way or torrential rainfall has started before they think about sandbags. This uses up valuable time that could be spent on other aspects of preparing your home and family. If you live in a low-lying or beachfront area, we recommend that you pick up some sandbags and keep them in your shed or garage so they’re ready if and when you need them. Bags will be provided for residents to fill with sand on site. Scoops for filling will be provided. Sandbags are for residential use only and will be available until supplies run out. Limits apply. Sandbags can be stored in a dry place out of direct sunlight for several months. Mulch consisting of green waste delivered to waste transfer stations during the recent free drop-off period will also be offered to residents at no cost. Both mulch and sandbags will be available from the following locations on 4-7 December: Portsmith Transfer Station, daily 8.30 am to 5.15pm Smithfield Transfer Station, Monday to Saturday 7am to 5.15pm, Sunday 9am to 5.15pm Gordonvale Transfer Station, daily 8.30am to 5.15pm Mulch is available from Babinda Waste Transfer Station upon request.

11.01.2022 Sandbags available to help residents plan Free sandbags will be made available to Cairns region residents tomorrow only, Thursday 24 December, ahead of consiste...nt rain forecast across the coming week. Acting Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Terry James said the sandbag opportunity was simply a precaution at this busy time of year. The amount of rain forecast over the next few days would not normally be a trigger for sandbagging, but we know this is an incredibly busy time of year with a number of people going away on holiday and looking to prepare their homes and businesses, Cr James said. Residents, especially those in low-lying areas, are welcome to come and get some sandbags from our waste transfer stations from tomorrow morning for their own peace of mind and preparation. Those heading off on holiday may also want to look at lifting electrical appliances to above ground level, ensuring important documents are secure in a zip-lock bag or similar and making arrangements with family or friends to check your home if need be. Cr James said the Local Disaster Management Group is monitoring the weather patterns, but has not activated in response to the current rain. This is fairly traditional wet season rain for the far north which means that rivers, creeks and drains might sit slightly higher than they have been through the extended dry season, he said. Bags will be made available for residents to fill with sand on site at participating waste transfer stations. Scoops for filling will be provided. Sandbags are for residential use only and will be available until supplies run out. Limits will apply per person. Sandbags and sand will be available from the following locations tomorrow only, Thursday 24 December 2015 until supplies run out. Portsmith Transfer Station 8.30 am to 5.15pm Smithfield Transfer Station 7am to 5.15pm Gordonvale Transfer Station 8.30am to 5.15pm For flood warnings and advice, visit the Bureau of Meteorology website www.bom.gov.au and follow the Cairns Disaster Coordination Centre on Facebook and Twitter (@CairnsDCC)
