22.01.2022 SLS Launch Update This is one of the solid rocket booster aft skirts that will fly on EM-1, the first test flight of SLS with NASAs Orion Spacecraft in late 2018 and a key milestone on the NASA's Journey to Mars. The aft skirt was recently moved to NASAs Booster Fabrication Facility (BFF) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center after the refurbishment work was completed at Hangar AF by booster prime contractor Orbital ATK. The aft skirt assembly and testing operations are now in wo...rk in order to be prepped for integration into the full booster, which will happen once the booster segments arrive at Kennedy for stacking. #NASA #SLS #SLSFiredUp

13.01.2022 Great Quote: "The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space - each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision." - Randall Munroe

12.01.2022 SLS EM-1 Launch tour update. - Launch Pad 39 Subject: Orland Business Journal report on Launch Complex 39 progress Jim Carchedi of Orlando Business Journal highlights progress of at Launch Complex 39, refitting it for SLS . . .... History is fueling the future as Brevard County awaits the next generation of space exploration. A massive redesign has been underway around NASA's Launch Complex 39 - where the Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and space shuttle missions began. Facilities that serviced, assembled and launched the history of American space flight are being redesigned for the next generation of spacecraft. The Vehicle Assembly Building, where rockets have taken shape since the 1960s, is being refitted with specially designed access platforms for the new Space Launch System (SLS). Ten levels of form-fitting, retractable platforms will allow engineers access to the heavy lift rocket system while it is being assembled. Rocket stages will be lifted into place by bridge cranes inside the VAB and assembled vertically. Each access level will have two platform "halves" measuring 62 feet wide by 38 feet long. Each half will surround the launch system, giving engineers 360-degree access. And just as the garage needs to be prepped for NASA's new ride, so does its pad. Structural upgrades and a new layer of insulation are being added to the future SLS launch site, pad 39B. More than 100,000 new heat-resistant bricks will line the pad's 571-foot-long flame trench. Its funnel-like design diverts heat and exhaust pressure as thousands of gallons of water are pumped through the trench to help decrease heat damage. The first SLS launch is slated for late 2018.
