22.01.2022 Self Myofascial Release Self myofascial release is a becoming an increasingly popular intervention used by those involved in sports, weightlifting and general fitness. It is commonly performed with the use of tools which range from a foam roller to a trigger point or lacrosse ball. It can be implemented as part of a rehab or training program before, during or after a session. Although the mechanism behind how self myofascial release tools work is not yet fully understood, ...some potential benefits include: Improving joint flexibility and range of motion Reducing muscle pain and soreness Stress reduction through CNS input and psychological factors Increasing blood flow and circulation It is important when deciding to use self myofascial release tools to get appropriate advice and learn how to use them safely and efficiently. 22.01.2022 Low Back Pain The prevalence of low back pain within Australia is significant, with an estimated 70-90% of people suffering from lower back pain in some point of their lives. There a number of issues which contribute to low back pain, ranging from disc herniations, muscle strains, ligament sprains and muscular imbalances within the lumbar region, pelvis and hip complex. It can be difficult to definitively diagnose due to the amount of structures present and variety of mechanisms within the region. It is important to find a practitioner who understands the primary underlying causes and that can provide an evidence based road for rehabilitation. 20.01.2022 Rehab Exercise As part of any remedial treatment, rehab exercises are extremely important in the recovery from pain and movement dysfunction. Manual therapy itself can provide relief from pain and a window of opportunity whereby the patient is able to perform corrective exercises in a safe and productive manner, to build upon the work done in a treatment. If your therapist or practitioner provides no exercise prescription or advice as part of their treatment protocols, it may be time to look for a different opinion, as it makes up a large part of getting out of pain and improving movement patterns.

05.01.2022 SLEEP Sleep is one of the most powerful, (yet undervalued) recovery tools we have! While our modern world makes getting a good nights sleep difficult, here are some tips to optimise the time you spend snoozing ... ROUTINE - set a regular time you go to sleep and wake up- and stick to it ENVIRONMENT - your room should be dark cool and clutter free CHILL OUT - try to avoid exercise late in the evening, and have a 30 min wind down time to calm your nervous system DEVICES - reduce blue light, switch off at least an hour before bed CAFFEINE - avoid drinking coffee in the second half of the day Happy sleeping!

Ventilation is a requisite in maintaining life and optimal human function, however correct breathing patterns and mechanics have long been undervalued within the health and fitness industry. The control of breath is one of two ways we are able to tap into the autonomic nervous system, which consists of the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous systems. Due to excessive stimulus and stress in current modern life, we spend a dispr...oportionate amount of time in a sympathetic state which can lead to sleeping problems, negative health markers such as high blood pressure and consistently elevated blood glucose levels, as well as mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. There are a variety of tools and resources covering the use of breath to increase parasympathetic tone, however the simplest methods are to create awareness of the breath throughout the day and using slow and controlled nasal only breathing to down regulate and restore calm to the system. In practice, I use breath both within a treatment and exercise session, but also as a point of education for clients, to use as part of their day to day life. See more
