25.01.2022 WHAT A BLESSING LAST WEEK’S TALK WAS FOR ALL WHO CAME OR JOINED IN Last Thursday 5th November Professor Philip Kariatlis of St Andrew’s Theological College spoke on the ever-timely theme THE CREED - ITS RELEVANCE FOR EVERYDAY LIVING. As usual, Dr Kariatlis made a very deep subject as understandable as possible. What a breath of fresh air. Tonight, at St Spyridon Church from 7.45-8.45 pm, Dr Mario Baghos who is a Lecturer in Patristics and Church History at St Andrew’s Theoo...logical College, will be speaking to the theme Our Relationship with the Saints in Light of Orthodox Tradition. SEE YOU TONIGHT FOR THE ORTHODOX RENEWAL SYMPOSIUM

25.01.2022 ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS SPOKE ON BIOETHICS WITH COURAGE AND CONVICTION His Eminence Archbishop Makarios kindly accepted an invitation from St Spyridon Fellowship earlier this year to speak at our Orthodox Renewal Symposium on Bioethics last night and it was well worth the wait. Given the maximum number of faithful who attended the talk at St Spyridon Church under the current Covid restrictions, our people responded with enthusiasm to the opportunity of listening to an authorita...tive talk on such a challenging topic that affects the lives of ordinary people in so many ways and the course of humanity, more generally. Our Archbishop who, apart from his considerable theological qualifications, also holds a Doctorate from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete is currently the President of the Synodal Committee for Bioethics at the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Archbishop Makarios whose talk was titled Bioethics - The Emerging Frontier from an Orthodox Standpoint spoke with courage and conviction, defending the sacredness of life, standing firm on Orthodox teachings and building a bridge between theology and science. On behalf of St Spyridon Fellowship and on behalf of the faithful who attended, we extend to our Primate and Father our sincere gratitude for his acceptance of our invitation and for his openness with our youth and our people. May God continue to bless His Eminence Archbishop Makarios with health and steadfastness to rightly teach the Word of His Truth. THANK YOU, YOUR EMINENCE, FOR YOUR LOVING AND FEARLESS EXPOSITION ON BIOETHICS

24.01.2022 IT WAS A PLEASURE TO HAVE HIS GRACE BISHOP ELPIDIOS OF KYANEON AT ST SPYRIDON TODAY All of our Bishops are a blessing to our Archdiocese in Australia. Today’s visitor to St Spyridon Church in Sydney, His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon, is a graduate of St Andrew’s Theological College and was hand-picked by our Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, ordaining him a Bishop in January of 2020.... Bishop Elpidios was enthusiastically received by the congregation at St Spyridon today. His bilingual Service was a ‘hit’ especially with our younger generations. He has been in Sydney due to a prolonged lockdown in Western Australia. He returns to Perth in the next few days. MAY GOD GIVE HIM STRENGTH IN HIS EPISCOPAL VOCATION AND MAY HE ALWAYS BE WORTHY

23.01.2022 OUR ELDERLY RETURNED TO THE SENIORS GROUP WITH CONFIDENCE AND JOY There’s no doubt about the resilience and staying power of our elderly parishioners. Having sustained months of isolation from familial and social interaction, they came to our Senior Citizens Group in droves, making an unmistakable statement that they’re not prepared to wither away due to Covid.... The President of the Philoptochos Ladies’ Auxiliary Miss Patricia Sofios welcomed the elderly back to the Group with the positive outlook of a great year. The Greek Welfare Centre which collaborated with all parishes to draw up the year’s social and cultural activities was represented by Mrs Dimitra Micos who was also on hand to wish our elderly well. Father Steven managed to visit the Seniors in between Services upstairs in the Church and was acknowledged by our elderly with spontaneous joy and acclamation. Our Parish Priest congratulated our Seniors for their patience and perseverance during this Covid-19 period and assured everyone that the Senior Citizens Group is as strong as ever and will make sure it is a great year. WELCOME BACK SENIOR CITIZENS - THE YEARS ON YOUR BACK CANNOT DIMINISH YOUR YOUTHFUL SPIRIT

21.01.2022 INTENSE WORK IS PROCEEDING SYSTEMATICALLY WITH THE $1 MILLION REPAIR AND RESTORATION WORK ON OUR CHURCH Architects, engineers, waterproofers, specialist builders and painters have been busy for weeks repairing and restoring the left bell tower initially, before moving to the right bell tower and eventually the rest of the church.

19.01.2022 OUR PATRIARCH HAS BEEN AT THE HELM OF THE CHURCH FOR 29 YEARS On the 29th anniversary of His ascension to the Throne of the Mother Church of Constantinople, St Spyridon Parish expresses respect, admiration and loyalty to His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for His wise Leadership and Vision in such a challenging period of history for the Orthodoxy and the world. We recall with humility the honour granted to us by His All Holiness when He visited our Parish and... College in 1996. It was an honour which remains indelibly etched in the history of our Parish. MANY YEARS, YOUR ALL HOLINESS Polychronion Lord, our God, we pray for length of days of His All-Holiness and most Venerable Master and Bishop our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Safeguard Him for many years, for many years, for many years.

19.01.2022 THANK YOU, FATHER AMPHILOHIOS, FOR A VERY COMPREHENSIVE TALK It was our very own Father Amphilohios Papantoniou’s turn to present his talk this evening as part of the Orthodox Renewal Symposium, and he excelled. What a pleasure to listen to Father’s talk entitled Pagan Myth - Christian Mystery - The Uniqueness of the Christ Event. ... His thorough research and honest presentation of certain Christian concepts as they have manifested in other traditions from antiquity to the present, were very much appreciated by his attentive audience. MAY GOD BLESS FATHER AMPHILOHIOS AND KEEP HIM ALWAYS WORTHY

18.01.2022 HIS GRACE BISHOP EMILIANOS CHALLENGED HIS AUDIENCE The inaugural Orthodox Renewal Symposium organized by St Spyridon Parish was honoured by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese, His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloe, who presented the first talk Humility - the Mother of Virtues. His Grace challenged our perception of humility by commencing with a question to the audience Is it humble to give a talk on humility?... Our Chancellor who was a monk at the Monastery of Simonopetra on Mt Athos for 14 years and Abbot of the Holy Monastery of St John of the Mountain in Western Australia, showed his deep spirituality by prompting us to think more deeply about true humility. Our Parish expresses deep gratitude to His Grace for his time and wisdom in the presentation of his talk. NEXT THURSDAY - Father Dimitri Kokkinos, the Parish Priest of St John’s Parish at Parramatta, visiting medical officer in Neurology at Bankstown Hospital and lecturer in Neurology at the University of New South Wales, will speak to the topic Vigilance - Wisdom in Spiritual Wrestling.

09.01.2022 END OF YEAR LUNCH FOR OUR SENIOR CITIZENS The elderly of our parish are respected and revered by all, not only for their longevity and survival through life’s many challenges, but mainly for their integrity of character and the wisdom they impart to anyone prepared to listen. During this Covid-affected year, our weekly Senior Citizens Group was sidelined for several months due to restrictions imposed everywhere by the government.... Just four weeks ago, the elderly were invited back to their weekly meetings under very strict conditions. Nonetheless, most of our precious members returned after enduring lockdown at their homes, away from children and grandchildren, and away from Church Services and their Senior Citizens Group. Many thanks go to the President of the Philoptochos, Miss Patricia Sofios, and the women of our Ladies’ Auxiliary for their tireless work once again during the year. This is such a loving mission of the Philoptochos that provides an outlet for the elderly each week. Many thanks also to Mrs Dimitra Micos and her co-workers Eleftheria and Nikos from the Greek Welfare Centre for their specialized training in Covid hygiene and practice which enabled the Senior Citizens Group to recommence its weekly meetings in the Church Hall. Meetings will resume in February next year when, we hope and pray, all of our seniors will be able to attend. WISHING OUR BEAUTIFUL SENIORS A WONDERFUL ST SPYRIDON’S FEAST DAY SOON, A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND A HEALTHY NEW YEAR

06.01.2022 COVID REGULATIONS STILL RESTRICTIVE FOR CHURCHES Whilst it is very welcome news that the NSW government has now permitted churches to accept up to 300 worshippers per Service, this does not mean that all restrictions have been overcome. All churches must still adhere to the regulation of one person per 4 square metres.... This means that St Spyridon church which is one of the larger Greek Orthodox churches in Sydney can only receive 200 worshippers at the most, per Service. Therefore, it will still be necessary for parishioners to contact the church on 9663 5147, Monday to Friday between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm, to register allocation of attendance. Allocations will only be accepted up to four weeks in advance, allowing for directives of the State government which might see the permissible number of 300 worshippers, currently, increase or decrease accordingly. St Spyridon Church will be giving priority to parishioners who are holding Memorial Services for loved ones. Every attempt will be made to accommodate the attendance of between 5 and 10 family members, depending on the number of Memorials. ‘THANK YOU’ TO ALL OUR PARISHIONERS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING DURING THIS CHALLENGING PERIOD FOR ALL OF US We look forward to all restrictions eventually being lifted and our parishioners free to attend Church without prior notification.
