22.01.2022 Announcement regarding the Celebration of Theophany in Australia The Holy Archdiocese of Australia, assessing the special circumstances prevailing due to the pa...ndemic and taking into account the advice from experts and the current regulations for the protection of public health, announces with regret, but also with a sense of pastoral responsibility, that the combined celebration of Theophany at Yarra Bay in Sydney will not go ahead this year, nor will the traditional services of the Sanctification of the Waters and the Throwing of the Cross within the states of Victoria and Western Australia. On the contrary, the corresponding ceremonies for the celebration of Theophany are planned to continue as normal with the presence of faithful on Sunday 10 January in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, the Gold Coast in Queensland and in Darwin.
22.01.2022 Saint John the Baptist About Saint John St. John was the son of the Prophet Zacharias and Elizabeth, who was a kinswoman of the Virgin Mary. St. John is known as the Forerunner and Baptist. He is known as the Forerunner because he preceded Christ and taught repentance, which prepared men for Jesus’ teaching and His ministry. He even recognized Christ as the Messiah as early as when they were both still in their mothers’ wombs. According to Holy Tradition, the Virgin Mary ...went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and when they embraced John leapt in his mother’s womb, which is considered his first acknowledgment of Christ as Messiah. After his birth, St. John’s father Zacharias was murdered in the temple. He and his mother fled to the desert and he was raised there. Thus he lived as an ascetic from the earliest part of his life. He ate plants and roots and wore rough clothing. When he grew, he baptized people in the Jordan, teaching repentance, but also saying that someone greater would come after him and baptize with the Holy Spirit. St. John always spoke the Truth and because Herod did not appreciate his criticism, he was imprisoned. Later he was beheaded, as the result of a promise Herod gave to his step-daughter to give her anything she asked. The daughter was convinced by her mother to ask for John’s head on a platter. Our parish celebrates the feast of St. John’s Beheading as our patronal feast day. It is a strict fast day in recognition of the way in which he died, but it is also a joyous feast day because John’s life was such a luminous example for monastics, martyrs and all Christians to follow him. Hymn of Saint John the Baptist The memory of the just is blessed, but the witness of the Lord is sufficient for you, Oh Forerunner. For you have shown forth as more venerable than the prophets, and found worthy, to baptize in the waters Him who they proclaimed. Therefore you were a champion for the truth. And pleased to bring good tidings even to those in Hades. That God made manifest in the flesh, takes away the sins of the world, and granting to us great mercy. 21.01.2022 Patron Saint we celebrate today: Saint Iakovos For a man whose kinship with Jesus Christ was so close that he was referred to as the Brother of the Lord, when actually it is generally believed that he was a cousin to the Savior, surprisingly little is known to detail a full account of his life. The holy memory of his life was assured, if by nothing else than the simple fact that he was related to the Nazarene. But enough is known of the life of St. James to establish him as a...Continue reading

19.01.2022 Today we Celebrate SAINT STYLIAN the Paphlagonian Son of wealthy parents (who was probably born in Paphlagonia, without this being certain, because his sacred relic was kept there), was taught early by them to be restrained and to consider money as a means of relieving and the poor and the sick. After he was raised that way, and his parents died, he divided all his inheritance and went as an ascetic in the desert. There he met other ascetics, where he lived with them with br...otherly love, Christian condescension and mercy. He never saddened anyone, his great joy in fact, was to restore peace to troubled souls. The fame of his wonderful ascetic life reached the cities, and many rushed to find him to ask him for his spiritual instructions. Saint Stylianos, despite his deserted life, nurtured affection and sympathy for the children, whom the Lord loved so much. "If, he said, humility is the foundation of virtue, or childhood is by nature more virtuous than the greatest of philosophers." Many times the parents brought their children to him, and then the joy of the saint was very great. God, rewarding this sacred feeling of his, endowed the saint with the gift of healing sick children and making childless women childless. He died full of days and virtues. 16.01.2022 SAINT AIKATERINI or Great Martyr Saint Catherine is a jewel in the dance of the martyrs of the 4th century AD. She came from Alexandria and was the daughter of noble parents (of King Constantius). She was beautiful in body, but also in Christian piety. He had excellent intelligence and at the age of 18 he had excellently studied all the Greek sciences, as well as the doctrines of Christian truth. So, when the Christians were severely persecuted by the emperors Maximian and...Continue reading

St. Dimitrios was the only son and was, because of this, most carefully cherished and educated. When his father died, Dimitrios was appointed by Emperor Maximian to take his place.
