24.01.2022 Mind Maps, when used effectively, can be one of the simplest yet most powerful way to help students visually organise their own thoughts to compartmentalise and... explore understanding when they would have ordinarily found themselves lost. 16.01.2022 A SIMPLE SELF-DISCIPLINE HACK TO GET KIDS ORGANISED When athletes are about to commence competition, they dont just get straight into it. They do some kind of ...ritual to get started. But thats to warm up their body like stretches right? Okay, then how about singing the national anthem at the start of a game - that doesnt warm up the body. So why do it then? Go to many family homes, and they wont start eating before saying a prayer. Whats the similarity? What about when you meet up with someone you havent seen for a while. You start by shaking hands. And then quite often, before saying god bye, youd shake hands again. But you wouldnt shake hands in the middle of the conversation. So whats this all about? So heres what Im getting at. The human brain learns by compartmentalising things into boxes in the mind. One of the ways our mind keeps those boxes solid is by knowing when to start something and when to finish it. Each culture has some kind of ritual to indicate the beginning of something as well as the end; these are the constants. What goes on in between - thats where the variables are. Dont get me wrong - we need a certain element of flexibility, creativity, spontaneity and adaptability in order to grow - otherwise we get bored and frustrated. But in order to maintain a calm and clear mind, we have to have discipline, and one of the simplest ways to instil healthy discipline, is to have a routine - especially one to get started, and one to get finished. In teaching, this is especially important with younger kids, kids who struggle with concentration and, just about anyone who might ordinarily be feeling a bit overwhelmed, uncomfortable or unfocused. This week at our Personal Coaching Centre, each group got to discuss and plan out a starting routine to begin the lesson. We decided that wed start by: * Taking a seat * Making sure that there is nothing on the table except the book and 1 pen * Placing hands flat on the table * Sitting up straight * Take a deep breath * Shake hands to welcome each other to the lesson * Take a moment to reflect on what we learned last week, taking it in turns according to who is asked. * Agreeing that whilst one person is responding, the others will give their attention to the speaker * Then to open a new page, write the heading of the lesson and the days date. Pens aside and sit up straight waiting to get started It doesnt need to be complicated or time consuming. In fact, a good starting routine should be simple and easy to achieve. Its purpose is to prime the mind to signal that it is time to get focused on the lesson is ahead. Without this signal, the brain is more likely to be bouncing thoughts all over the place, get distracted and lose focus. The homework this week is to think of one area of life where the student already has an existing routine, and to break down the steps in that routine. The second part is to think of an area of their life where they struggle to feel disciplined or organised, and to come up with a step by step routine to signal their brain that its time to stop, readjust their focus, and get started on the new activity. Its a very simple practice, but it is forms the basis for building more complex organisational skills later on like time management. Parents - your child is unlikely to learn this stuff at school, so they are likely to be confused about this and assume that theyre not learning, when in fact these are among the most important cognitive and behavioural skills to learn from a young age. So please reinforce this during the week by having a chat with your child about their routines, and how to improve, create and fine tune at least one other routine in their week. Look out for your childs weekly feedback report by email also for more tips, ideas and insight. Please also check out the video coaching program available here: http://hypnotherapist.sydney/parent-coaching-sydney.html Well done guys - hope youre feeling a bit more organised, focused and disciplined each lesson. 07.01.2022 COGNITIVE EMPATHY FOR KIDS: So heres a classic scenario any teacher, tutor or even parent will be familiar with: the perfectionist or kid whose confidence is s...hot to bits who is resistant to make a start especially with their writing tasks. Theres a bunch if techniques you can use to condition this habit out of them, so heres one of the easier ones you can do if you have another student or even a small group. The first step is to get the students to write at least 1 paragraph of text about something. Ideally an argument if youre focusing on persuasive writing, or maybe the scene from a story if youre focusing on creativity stuff. Ideally, they should write at least 3 solid paragraphs, each with a very different main point. On a seperate piece of paper, the student now needs to summarise each paragraph. The rules are a) the wording needs to be similar but not identical to the wording used in the original text, b) It has to address only the main point as being seperate from the more decorative detail, and c) It needs to be limited to 1 sentence with the aim to make the sentence as short as possible. So this is what happens next. Now each student hands their writing to another student. The other students task now is to summarise each of their classmates paragraphs, using the same rules for summarising. If you have multiple students, then it would be ideal to them repeat this process again and again. Once theyre done, you get each student to read out and compare their versions of the summary. Other than improve the summarisation skills of the students writing the summary, this does something very important for the writer whose writings are being summarised by the other students. Unless every single student comes up with the exact same summary, what it does is get them to see how the words theyre putting on the page can be interpreted (or misinterpreted) through the eyes of the reader. Its important that the teacher facilitates the dynamics of the group in a way to minimise it being a competitive exercise, or making the focus about whose summary was the best or who was right or wrong. Instead, it is purely for the writer to have a think about how their wording may have influenced the reader to come up with those summarise. If the summaries are a bit far off from what the writer intended them, then the aim here is to switch their thinking from everyone just misinterpreted it to how can I reword it so that their interpretation is closer to my intention. When facilitated in this way among students with an existing healthy dynamic, this exercise, with repetition, can be great for getting a young learner to practise their cognitive empathy skills by thinking outside of themselves and instead consider things from the perspective of the person on the receiving end. When this happens, they also become more receptive to constructive criticism, because the intention switches from making the writing about themselves, and instead making it about the reader. Over time, this skill can become transferred into all other areas of interpersonal communication, and forms the basis of some of the most highly valuable skills in the workplace.
