16.01.2022 1963 was a significant year for Studebaker in Australia. The Lark range was the best selling V8 in the country. It was also the lowest priced, undercutting stiff competitors like the Chevrolet Belair, Pontiac Laurentian, Chrysler Royal, Ford Fairlane and even the 6 cylinder Rambler Classic Canada Cycle assembled 1441 Lark Cruiser sedans, Lark Daytona Wagons, Lark 2 door sedans (for police use) and GT Hawks. This was approx. 6% of total Studebaker production that year. In Bris...bane there was a six month waiting list for Granturismo Hawks. Customers were being quoted prices and delivery dates for both locally assembled and fully imported models. The Ipswich City Council placed an order for a fleet of 7E Champ pickups from Howards Ltd. Hunter Brothers (waste management) also placed an order for a fleet of Daytona Wagonaires Some vehicles from both fleet orders still survive By 1963 all mainland Australian state capitals and some provincial cities used Studebaker vehicles for police work. The state of Victoria (home of Studebakers assembly operations) had the largest Studebaker police fleet in the world. Studebaker was also making a name for itself in Australia's greatest motor racing event, at the time known as the Bathurst 500. The future was looking bright.
