25.01.2022 Aboriginal Ways of Learning In line with our philosophy of individualised learning support comes another consideration: cultural preferences. It is so important to engage all students in learning which is meaningful to them. 8ways is a great resource to assist in creating meaningful learning for First Nation students based on Aboriginal ways of learning. We all learn in different ways. The only way to reach every student is to be fully versed in a variety of different frameworks and apply them according to the individual needs of those students. https://www.8ways.online/about

20.01.2022 So true for teachers too. Every time we say You’re so clever or All your hard work has paid off or You’re getting there, keep trying, children start to internalise the messages. The more they hear genuine encouragement, the more they believe it. The more they believe it, the faster they improve. They build a resilience in the learning process which carries through to adulthood. All it takes is a few positive words from their teacher.

19.01.2022 Some excellent tips for beginning readers. As always the key is knowing your student to discover what works for them.

19.01.2022 Teacher Quotables: This is the third in our series of teacher quotables. This one highlights the fact that academic ability and self esteem go hand-in-hand. When self esteem is raised through some academic success, that success is accelerated. Increasing skill levels start to snowball with increasing self esteem and can increase success exponentially. So often, it all begins with a little boost in self esteem.

18.01.2022 Am I Clever? It's a question many adults and kids alike ask themselves everyday. It is a question which nags at the core one's self esteem. Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences says 'Yes'. There are many types of intelligences, including interpersonal, bodily-kinesthetic and naturalistic intelligence. When your individual strengths are not verbal-linguistic (reading and writing) or logical-mathematical, school can be a difficult place to form a solid self esteem. A good teacher must teach according to their student's natural intelligences in order to facilitate a quality and uplifting learning journey. https://www.institute4learning.com//multiple-intelligences/

10.01.2022 All of us here at Cultivating Crossroads aspire to be that inspirational teacher. It is so important to all of us that our students understand their unique potential. We are passionate about what we do and that translates to our students as self belief as much as skill development.

07.01.2022 Maths Difficulties Sometimes the difficulties children have with maths are deeper than they appear. This is a great diagram outlining the signs of dyscalculia, a lesser known mathematical equivalent to dyslexia. As teachers we need to truly understand the nature of the difficulties children have with maths in order to help them. It requires quality, individualised and sometimes innovative programs.

07.01.2022 Hope at last...! Finally, an initiative to ensure that ‘no child is left behind.’ It breaks my heart when I have children coming to me for tuition in reading who are many years below their age level. The worst I ever had was a Year 5 student who could not read the word ‘cat’. He had misbehaved at school to cover the fact that he couldn’t read and was doomed in terms of his future. Clearly this child had learning difficulties which were not identified. He was labelled a ‘bad kid’ and left in the ‘naughty corner’. It is time for evidence based practice, and that includes synthetic phonics! There is no excuse for children spending seven years in full-time education without learning to read. Every state and territory education minister must make a pledge to provide the keys to literacy to every child before they leave primary school.

02.01.2022 With Anita’s help, our son’s reading has made an exceptional improvement. She is engaging, enthusiastic and creative in her teaching - we are excited to continue with her again this year

01.01.2022 I am thrilled to share with you a work sample from one of my students. This is a boy who has struggled with learning difficulties throughout his schooling life and has struggled greatly with his self-belief. He needed a new approach. In just one term, he has improved dramatically on a synthetic phonics program, loaded with fabulous resources from SPELD. One of the booklets we have been working through ended with the opportunity to write a cinquain poem. When I told him what ...we were going to do, he had a momentary panic. We worked through that with some assurances and he gave it a go. He came up with some very creative word options for his poem, some of which didn't make it to the final draft, but were still impressive in themselves. He was so proud of his final product! Most heartening was his comment today. When I congratulated him on how fast he had worked through the session's activities, he said, "That's because I'm smart now." There is no music more beautiful to a teacher's ears, than to hear a child express belief in themselves! See more
