24.01.2022 Join the Team!!! This November we are teaming up with ASeTTS to walk/ run/ celebrate and fundraise for Refugees!!! How it works:... Each team member will have their own profile page, any steps and fundraising will be added to the team’s overall goal! You can use any app to measure your steps etc. however the Strava App will be linked to the 2BK Website! It is an easy process; you can walk by yourself; with a friend; family member etc. All you have to do is track your steps using any app and make sure to record your step count on your profile! We ended up collecting more than 5 full bins of food and we’ve donated all our collections to the CARAD-Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees Inc food bank! We’d also like to give a special shoutout to Sanchita Gera who made a significant contribution to our efforts by organising her own neighbourhood food drive

The United Nations defines a stateless person as someone who is "not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law". Some stateless people are also refugees. 20.01.2022 Most of us struggled to get through isolation but we still had our mobile phones with us to connect to the external world. However, the government is trying to push a bill which will remove mobile phones from people living in refugee detention centres. 17.01.2022 Earlier today, it was revealed that Priya was discharged from hospital and will be returning to Christmas Island. Although doctors have stated that detention-related stress may have contributed to her symptoms, she is being returned to detention in Christmas Island. This is simply unjust and its important that we all continue to stand in solidarity and advocate for Priya and her family. Tomorrow, there is another calling event to ring our leaders and ask that Priya, Nades and their girls be allowed to return home to Biloela. There will be 2 sessions (11am AWST and 3pm AWST). Be sure to RSVP through the link on the event page to receive the Zoom link. Even if you can only join for 10 minutes, please join in! Every voice counts. Every call counts.

17.01.2022 Smartphone Donations We recently reported the positive news that the government's bill to ban mobile phones from detention centres was defeated. CARAD cont...inues to collect donated smart phones to distribute to people seeking asylum in immigration detention. Face-to-face visiting in detention centres has been suspended since March 2020 and there are no indications that visiting will reopen anytime soon, so staying connected virtually is more important than ever. If you have an unlocked, wiped, smartphone in working order please consider donating it to CARAD. We will get it in the hands of those who need it most. Please share with your network.

Recently, Priya has been flown to Fiona St...anley Hospital in Perth for urgent medical care. She has been separated from her husband and children. Imagine the fear, the anxiety of being unwell and in a foreign place all alone... 08.01.2022 We are relieved to share that as of yesterday, Huyen and her 2-year-old daughter were released out of Melbournes immigration detention. This feat could not have been possible without the help of your support and signatures. Although this does goes in saying that many other families in Christmas Island are still stuck in detention and remain most at risk to COVID-19. These families are left alone without the most basic provisions and medicine. 07.01.2022 CW: racism, xenophobia Recently it has come to our attention that our page has received a few racist & xenophobic comments, particularly towards people of refugee background living in our community and abroad. Students for Refugees UWA would like to reiterate that we will NOT tolerate any discrimination in our groups community and we want to affirm our anti-racist stance through replying with educational content in the hopes that people can learn to empathise with the exper...ience of others, particularly extending this empathy to people of refugee and asylum-seeking background. Our humanitarian values remain strong in underpinning our beliefs that everyone deserves a home, safety and to feel like they belong, no matter where you are born. This is not going to change based on a few comments that see otherwise. Please find attached some resources that may specifically assist CALD students and people living in our community that may find the ignorant and discriminatory comments of others as distressing. If you are an ally we would like you to know that your support counts and we hope you continue to advocate for the human rights of others. 06.01.2022 While communities of refugee and/or asylum seeker backgrounds are often generalised or referred to as one group in mainstream media, in reality these communities come from a variety of different national, ethnic and religious backgrounds According to the Refugee Council of Australia, the largest number of refugees living in Australia are from Syria (6.65 million), Afghanistan (2.68 million), South Sudan (2.29 million) and Myanmar (1.15 million). In this series, created in collaboration with the @UWA Ethnocultural department, we have tried to highlight and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural backgrounds of Australias refugee communities
