17.01.2022 In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) summer is the time for heart energy, it represents the outward expression of energy, expansiveness, movement and activity. It is the most yang of seasons and is ruled by fire, life and our energy at its peak. In TCM summer relates to the heart (Yin) and the small intestine the (Yang).... The heart pumps the blood and the small intestine separates the pure from impure foods in our digestion but also from our relationships and consciousness. Colour - Red Emotion - Joy Sound - Laughter Taste - Bitter Direction - North So how does this affect us and what can we do? Summer is a great time to heal past hurts and fill the heart with joy and happiness. Mental acuity is associated with the heart therefor memory, thought processes and emotional wellbeing also can be affected. When the heart is balanced the mind is calm, we sleep well and wake rested, plus we laugh with ease. When the heart is unbalanced we lack joy which can manifest in depression or have excess joy leading to mania or manic episodes. Nervousness, insomnia, heartburn and confusion plus red complexion, poor memory and speech problems all indicate in TCM that the heart energy is out of balance. Exercise is so important and good cardio workouts matter, but we also need rest and down times to keep the balance. Lots of extra water is needed in these months. Foods for summer are more cooling so for those who have a weak digestion please go easy on these and the best tip is to not eat them cold from the fridge, leave them on the bench to drop to room temperature or add in the bitter greens to the salads for more heat. Apricot, Watermelon, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Lemons, Sprouts, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Corn, White Mushroom, Seaweed, Mint, Dill, Duck and Fish. Plus your bitter greens like Spinach and Kale. 15.01.2022 Why we get Sciatica when Pregnant I have two main things to say about sciatica and pregnancy. 1. If you get sciatica regularly, then please get help before you're thinking of getting pregnant, as pregnancy may stir the sciatica up.... 2. Sciatica in pregnant women usually happens because there is more prolactin in the body and this hormone is what helps open our ligaments and muscles to allow the baby to be birthed. So it's a natural state but because it does make us over flexi the muscles can stretch too far and then tighten back around our sciatic nerve causing us pain and discomfort. From a Chinese Medicine perspective its because of the extra heat in your system from being pregnant and this heat will try to escape out the gallbladder meridian that runs through the side of your body making the muscles tighter. It's real easy to over stretch, so watch that you don't go too deep at yoga, push that gentle walk to a longer gait or over do physical things. Lifting heavy objects, toddlers on your hip and even standing or sitting for long periods of time can cause this. Things you can do are rolling regularly on a roller through your hip area, lower back and ITB, it's the big tendon running down the outside of your leg from your knee to your ankle. You don't need to go heavy with this either just apply gentle pressure regularly as force usually won't help. Massaging this area plus taking magnesium and placing heat packs on your hips will all help to unwind those tight muscles, this will encourage blood and oxygen into the muscles. Drink around approx 1 1/2 liters of water a day preferably before 3pm so you wont be up all night visiting the toilet. Healthy happy pregnancy. Tabitha

Because you've arrived at a place where there's nothing to prove, where you're finally enough, where there's nothing more for anyone else that you really have to achieve. And now, what now?... Well now you start to do you, you start on the journey to find who you're really here to be. Brad

11.01.2022 So since the weather has sprung into Spring we have been noticing lots of random body aches, sprains and sciatic pain in the clinic. These body symptoms have literally come out of nowhere, with no real explanation of why they have occurred. Well Chinese Medicine has the answer; you see through Winter the bodies Qi (chi) has gone deep into the organs and the muscles have slightly contracted, due to the cold. We haven't been sweating as much so even our pores have been less act...ive. You may have noticed if you work out or do that exercise thing that your body needs to warm up a bit longer before you feel agile and flexible. Even simple things like getting out of bed in the morning or out of a chair or the car, can make you feel that you are stiffer then you remember. Well this is your bodies response to Winter and now its waking up. So then along comes Spring with its flash of heat and wind then back to cold and our body keeps flipping from warm to cold. Our muscles expand and contract with this temperature change and as they try to adjust this is when we can crick our back or neck, ending up with these weird aches and strains from not really doing anything. What you can do; Move slowly, allow your body time to warm up, make time to stretch the muscles before you bounce out of bed, even bending or reaching for things needs to be slow as your muscles are still coming out of hibernation.. Drink at least 1.5 litres of water before 3pm, sipping helps the water stops to the toilet. Include a good supplement of magnesium to your day as this helps the muscles to relax plus add in foods that are high in Mg+ ; dark chocolate (it must be over 70% cocoa though), avocado, nuts, legumes and tofu to name a few. Start to increase your exercise cardio slowly giving the muscles time to wake up. Keep that jacket and scarf handy for when the weather changes and enclosed shoes help to keep the body warm plus these will all support your immune system. Here comes the heat so enjoy this last bit of cooler weather. Tabitha

I know the journey of falling pregnant for some women can be filled with challenges and from my 20 years of practice in this field I clearly see how Traditional Chinese Medicine fits in with this process. I love helping women prepare for pregnancy and when pregnant to support and maintain their health all the way through their pregnancy, then most importantly of all beyond c...hildbirth. Through my own journey of having had three pregnancies and births, I know how essential acupuncture and herbal support was. It helped by supporting me to maintain a healthy body and spirit to cope with all the changes that pregnancy and child birth gave me. I see this weekly in the clinic that when the body is balanced and the mind is calm then things fall into place and our health flourishes. Because she needs to feel your strength, your power, that she can trust you, that you’ll stay when things get hard. And when I help a man to understand what’s calling, they find their deep desire to crack open her heart.... Ultimately, she needs to know that you are willing and able to penetrate her heart.

06.01.2022 It's been pretty windy on the Gold Coast so I thought there was no better time to let you know about the perils of wind. Just when you thought that the cold and flu season was over the wind appears. Wind is associated with Spring and the liver. Wind brings change but also can bring with it some dreaded bugs. It is seen as the spearhead of all pathogens as it drives those viruses past your immune system and deeper in. So here's some things that you can do. Avoid the wind, when... you can. Be aware of the effects it can have and watch out if you notice that it is aggravating you, at that point do your best to cover up. A cold wind will tend to effect the back of your neck so if you are noticing a draft in that area throw a scarf around your neck. Warm winds tend to effect the face and clog up those sinuses, so get out of it if you notice yourself being effected and possibly can. If it got you and you begin to notice that you are coming down with something, then hit some herbs early. We recommend our Cold and Flu formula which has a wind clearing ingredient, but you may have your favourite, whatever it is hit it as early as possible. You can also boost your immune system with herbs, astragalus being one of my favourites, and do all those things that give your liver a rest, you know all those things that your liver doesn't like. So there it is. Wind is a part of Spring, now hopefully you can escape this active season without any of those unneeded lurgies.

05.01.2022 It seems like that time of the year is already here, everything feels a little high paced and the diary is booking up. So the best thing you can do is to take a restful attitude amongst the busy and enhance that energy we call Yin, within our daily lives. So Yin is all about nurturing and holding the peace within our heart, it's the energy of no rush allowing ease and grace to filtrate our lives. Now don't get me wrong Yin energy is not about doing nothing, if anything it's t...he energy that will get things done in a real no bothersome way, things just get done with a no stress attitude when your Yin leads. It's a certain intent that is needed to cultivate this Yin energy, to keep it working for us and we do this by sinking deep into that part of us that knows when we must pull back and rest. It's that part of us that knows when we are pushing and need to slow down. When we do this the Yin backs us and allows that Yang (adrenaline energy) to take a back seat, giving us energy that is more grounded and will last longer and not drain us. So breathe and stop every time you feel the rush and sink back into that nurturing you, centre then move forward in a more relaxed Yin way. Things will get done but your energy will remain. Try it out, and don't get hypnotized by the rush of this time of year. Best, Tabitha

05.01.2022 Back Pain in Pregnancy Back pain in pregnancy. Of course the most obvious reasons for the back pain is the natural structural changes that your body is going through, but there's another reason too, and if you want to get to the root of the problem then here is where you start. Back pain in pregnancy is often related to kidney function. This doesn't mean that you have any kind of kidney disease or anything like that. Rather, there's an energetic kidney depletion due to the b...aby drawing it's nourishment from you. This results in the lower back not being supported as much as it normally would be. It's natural for this depletion to occur, but in our modern world it's often difficult to get the rest that you really need to rebuild your kidney strength. Your body is often trying to get you to slow down, rest in this specific condition is the best medicine, but also difficult to achieve. Your back pain will often be in conjunction with this fatigue and other kidney signs like fluid retention, especially to the ankles. Depleted kidney energy results in the body fluids not getting processed throughout the body the way they normally would resulting in this pooling. So while it's essential that we treat the lower back area the kidneys also require support and why you'll often see us adding points to the ankle area. The ankles contains some powerful kidney supporting points that we want to take full advantage of. We want to treat the localized area of pain, but also get to the cause, because that's how we get the best results. It's what makes acupuncture such a powerful tool, it treats the root of the problem as well as how it manifests. The 3 best things you can do for lower back pain when your pregnant is: Acupuncture, of course. It's highly effective at treating lower back pain and is completely safe in pregnancy when treatment is done by a qualified experienced practitioner. Good diet. By keeping up good nourishment you build your kidney energy. Rest, when you can. Because it's probably exactly what you need and kidney energy increases well with rest. 03.01.2022 Within my years of treating pregnant women in our clinic and including my own three births I have seen that labour can start subtly usually before week 40. The body starts to prep us by giving us little braxton hicks at night or through the day. There can be random stages where mini contractions last for 20 minutes with each contraction coming in regular time intervals only to stop abruptly leaving us in a state of, "oh I thought we were go". This can happen at any time from ...38 weeks on, sometimes earlier... But every woman is different and some can get no pre-trials but glides easily into active labour when the baby is ready. It's just how your body is made up and how it will respond can be so different to anyone else or previous births, so be gentle on yourself and know that your body knows what it is doing. It's always tricky the first time around as you have nothing to compare it to except maybe your mum or sisters births and this can be so different to what you will experience. Seek guidance from health professionals but also know your inner intuition and gut feeling is very dependable if we listen. Happy slow stages to labour gets you to the finish line, try to enjoy every twinge and false contraction knowing that this is all loading your system with oxytocin which will soften and help efface your cervix to get labour going. Really the women's body is a masterpiece and often our thoughts and emotions just need to get out of the way and let her play her biggest symphony yet. Best, Tabitha
