24.01.2022 Here is my report of this incredible event. The Big Picture Fest At first I have to say I'm quite new to the world of muralists and I had no idea what I entered... when I sent my application to The Big Picture Fest. The Big Picture Fest already existed for a while in other cities, but for Newcastle it was the first time. What I write down below is my experience as a newbie, although my very first experience was the large mural I did in Maitland. Apparently this first one helped my application through and the BPF team trusted me to create a mural on King street. I was happy with any wall I could get, but this specific wall had some huge pros and cons. The wall had a narrow footpath around it, so we needed a lot of volunteers managing the public to get safely walking between us and the busy traffic. The wall itself was not in the best condition. It had a lot of chipped paint that had to be removed before I could start anyway. There were a few outdated signs of previous tenants that spoiled the canvas. And also ... it was a brick wall. Brick walls are not the most popular walls for muralists, because filling in the joints of the bricks with paint takes a lot more time and they are undermining the flow and straight lines of a sketch. But there were pros too. The location was superb. King Street - Union Street intersection is a busy location where thousands of cars passing by, so I quickly ignored the cons and tried to make it work on this specific location. Another very lucky thing was the shade. This was a southern wall. Like you may have noticed in my usual artworks; I like to work with a limited color palette within one artwork. One of the color combinations on my wish list I once wanted to use was olive green and apple green. These two distinguished colors sort of 'fighting' each other in attention and I knew the apple green would really pop out if I could use it on an olive green background. My main intention of my public artworks is only to get a smile or to get a moment of recognition. I don't expect anything else of people driving by, busy with their own lives. So, my apple green trees are flowing their souls around in the air only wanting to encourage you to ... unwind, after a busy day at work. Let your hair loose and let it all go for a while. Be the apple green crazy one and make an impression at that intersection of your life. The owners of the building decided they wanted the olive green color on the side of Union Street too, so in a couple of weeks I will finish some details on the left side of King street and one ribbon might get blown around the corner. Know that I'm almost levitating of pure pride by getting the responsibility to enliven this wonderful city with a bit of my art. Thank you so much team of The Big Picture Fest. 19.01.2022 Thanks Morpeth! It was a wonderful week. So many people have stopped to say hi and gave us compliments. I've come to love Morpeth! I could sit on your streets for another week to go on with more and more decorations, but today I had to clean up my brushes and make room, because tomorrow (Friday) the 6 weeks program of street activation (live music, markets, shows) starts. I'll be there, this time in a dress

12.01.2022 'The protected one' 25 x 25 cm. Oil on canvas Protected against what? Against staring eyes or against bird poo?... And what exactly is protected? Is it beauty that needs to be protected? Or the health? In some countries a protection in itself is a comfortable way to not get sunburned. A way to stay unnoticed in the masse or to show the rest of us that you are part of a specific group. Also the protection is believed as conserving the beauty of the wearer and therefor symbolically decorated with beautifying elements. In any case, it won't fully protect from the bigger disasters in life, like bush fires or diseases.

11.01.2022 'What we learnt and what we are learning' In Newcastle when making the mural on King Street, we learnt that we definitely needed a spray gun if we wanted to go on on this specific path of art. Two years ago in Maitland, I created the 'hairy' trees and didn't need to blend colors. Because I simply added more dark hairs (brush strokes) on the shadow-side. For the design in Newcastle I expected I could blend the colors just like I do on a canvas in my studio ... a spray gun didn...'t even cross my mind. But boy I was wrong! Blending colors on large surfaces is hard if you only use a brush. And in hot weather it is impossible. The result in the end was fine, but it could have been done so much more efficient. And a license to operate a boom lift ... that's a serious thing for a muralist too. For the design of the rugs I'm doing in Morpeth I learnt a few other aspects of public art. They are called 'Time' and 'Asphalt'. In case I get another offer to paint a 'flooral' in the future I really need 30% more time for a project than the actual painting time I have in mind. Because rain can spoil a whole day. I should have known that, because the mural in Maitland was done in October too with a lot of rainy days. Why did I forget that? Another time gobbler is the constant question of what I'm doing. It eats up 10% of the working time. Standing on a scaffold we were a target for conversation only for the most bold passers-by. But sitting on my bum in the middle of the street, I can't escape the questions. Furthermore there is the beast of 'unexpected errors'. For example; a spray gun that decided to have an off day today ... The surface is something I need to consider in my planning. The rug I painted in front of my studio, was done on concrete. If I had counted the painting hours it took (what I didn't), it could be done in less than 2 days. But Berkley and Green Street in Morpeth have a layer of asphalt. And there is asphalt ... and coarse asphalt. Coarse asphalt is horrible to paint on! A spray gun helps, but only for the straight designs like the federation style tiles. I didn't make templates for the flowery decorations with curly lines en small details ... I haven't even started to paint them on this asphalt yet. One advantage of coarse asphalt; it gives a beautiful carpet-like texture. Day 5. Two days to go ... My Maitland Maitland City Council

08.01.2022 This photo is too good not to be shared. My Lincoln and Steve Kilbey.

02.01.2022 At the heart of the Space Junk! movie is an old Lincoln Continental owned by Studio Amsterdam - Patricia Van Lubeck and Frank Winnips. Director Julien Poulson s...potted the car parked around the back of the Studio Amsterdam art gallery in Maitland, promptly fell in love, and asked Frank and Patricia if it could play a leading role in his film. A fuel pump, much swearing and quite a bit of tinkering later, the Lincoln was ready to take to the streets for its starring role. Thanks to Daniel Rogers and the good people at Newcastle Commercial Vehicles and Hunter LDV for helping get this magnificent old lady back on the road! Here's a shot cinematographer Mark Roy and Julien set up in front of the Heddon Greta Drive In screen last night at sunset- the actor is Steve Kilbey from The Church. #spacejunkmovie #studioamsterdam #mymaitland See more
