23.01.2022 Herero Tribe ~ inhabitants much of Namibia, in Southern Africa. This indigenous tribe recognised by their traditional Victorian-Era style of dress. In 1892 German colonists entered Namibia. By 1904 - they declared it German Southwest Africa. The Herero and Namaqua genocidal massacre was the first genocide of the 20th century. Between 1904 and 1908 more than 80% of the Herero population and 50% population were slaughtered, killed by German soldiers.... During this colonial period, the main Herero cultural groups in central Namibia were heavily influenced by western culture. There is still a large majority of Herero peoples (spread in many areas) who maintain isolated as pastoral nomads. The Herero peoples were initially forced to dress and assimilate to German traditions, the colonisers of the land - with the clothing being a symbol of oppression, genocide and slavery. Overtime, the Herero peoples transformed this once dictatorial cultural attire into a new sacred tradition, wearing and making the dresses and adornments themselves ~ for the whole community. Colourful and patterned fabrics were used and it soon became a position of pride, respect and honour to their own peoples.
