Her landscapes are born from a desire to feel connected to a place, and self. Her paintings are personal and reflective of her quirky yet confident and positive approach to life. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, Hilary migrated to Australia with her family at 6 years of age. She lives in the Blue Mountains and it has been her home for over 45 years. Considering herself as a late starter to painting, Hilary began her art practice after her two daughters were grown and independent. She first ventured into painting as a form of therapy, but soon discovered her thirst of learning and developed her own style. 12.01.2022 SPECIAL STOCKROOM RELEASE We are pleased to present Kate Broadfoot. Kate Broadfoot is a pleinair landscape painter working in oil and watercolour. Based in the Northern Illawarra of NSW, she draws inspiration from the diverse and spectacular region in her locality. Her subjects arise from everyday arrangements of poles, fences, streets, bushes and clusters of roofs. She seeks out and highlights the extraordinary in the scenes others might carelessly encounter in their daily r...outines. The process of painting pleinair is thoroughly engaging. Life passes by, people come and go, wildlife crosses my line of sight, cows gather to stare over fences, birds move closer and closer the longer I am absorbed. All of these moments add to the depth within the painting. The challenge of getting that scene onto a board is mentally all-consuming. This is my happy place, a passion I have had since high school days. Our vibrant and impulsive art teacher would pile the senior students into her family van and take us painting in locations such as a cow paddock at Jamberoo or the Port Kembla steelworks. Those early pleinaire experiences set me on a path for life, a love of painting from the actual location, with fresh bold brushwork and immediacy. "In March of 2020 I relocated from Sydney to Melbourne. I began painting this series as winter set in, as the number of Covid-19 cases in Melbourne began to climb and a longer, more restrictive lockdown was imposed. Plein-air and landscape painting had become unviable During my one hour of permitted daily exercise I would collect the flowers from around the neighbourhood. Artists often work in isolation, so I was grateful for the familiarity of my studio routine but more so for the subject matter. The luminescence and structural beauty of the magnolia flower provided a focus to counter the sense of dread and uncertainty.
