Assessing and ticking off the following areas along the way: 1 Ankle Range of Motion - Do you have enough movement at that joint to run? 2 Calf strength - Can you successfully perform the required amount of single leg heel raises? 3 Do you have adequate Glute strength and stability through your hip complex? 4 Can you control your core? All of these things can be assessed easily, programming implemented to improve it and then your running load can be increased safely.
