Im always struck when people say that they were born to dance. Because for me, drawing, painting & writing were my main childhood talents. Dance came much later. I wouldve been equally as happy doing any of those things. It didnt have to be dance necessarily. It wasn't til my early 20's that the dancer in me became fully alive. I became obsessed with dancing. I performed at all the cultural & community events. But I couldnt imagine making money from it. I finished uni & started working in customer service. I was so conflicted, because I was obsessed with being an artist & yet saw no future in it. Then I read The Alchemist, which talks about finding your own personal legend. It made me ask- what do I really want to do? I applied for Modern Contemporary Dance at Deakin Uni & went to the audition, aged 24. I felt like the oldest person there. Most were teenagers, wearing tutus, doing the splits, looking like they had danced their whole life. I felt so out of place. It took all my strength not to run out the door. Only the top 2% get accepted. Somehow, I got in! (Josh went on to work internationally & live in Pakistan for 10 yrs. Her experiences since then are too many to include here - read the full blog to find out!) Coming back after all these years & doing Bollywood again, it's been a real identity shift. In the beginning, I didnt want to own up to it. I felt like I was more sophisticated than that. But now Ive fallen in love with Bollywood in a new way. Ive realised that it's much more than just a flimsy, glamorous thing. It really is a portal of joy. Through Bollywood dance, we give ourselves permission to be silly, to be child-like, to have a laugh, & not take ourselves so seriously. I started Bharatanatyam at age 10. But I found the teaching too slow, so I joined Bollywood instead. It was a very small dance school, so I got lots of individual attention. I was naturally good at it & from the age of 13, my teacher encouraged me to start teaching. I’ve got an independent mindset. When I was in grade 5, there was a small shop near my house that sold a special type of Imli (tamarind) that wasn’t available elsewhere. I used to buy it & then sell it for 5 rupees more! Since grade 10, I've been financially independent. I’ve seen my father struggle all his life to make sure we were financially secure. He worked overtime, sometimes till 3am. It’s inspired me to find my own way to earn, rather than burdening him. After uni, I got a job in IT, but there was a 6-month gap before I could start. I decided to train full-time as a dance instructor at Cult @becurefit. I trained for 10 hrs/day for 2 months. They also tell you to keep smiling during class. I used to wonder, but it really does work. Smiling is contagious. It spreads happiness & positivity. I’ve been here exactly one year, studying for my Masters. Of course I wanted to be independent, so in my first week I started working as a kitchenhand. During this year, I’ve done a number of jobs: railway customer service, Coles, UberEats, hospitality & Studio J. During the initial days of COVID, I was without a job for 3 months. That was tough. But I really believe in the law of attraction & manifesting what you want. I applied to Coles eighty-four times & was rejected. But I didn’t give up. Then one day, I got the job. When I have to study, I just do it. I love being busy. It’s great to keep your mind & body active. There is no time to attract any negative thoughts. It’s a beautiful life. My mantra is always: Eat well, sleep well, drink lots of water, keep smiling. No matter what, just dance it out. And always give your 200%.

11.01.2022 It's a weird feeling, seeing our once packed & bustling studio now massively reduced in numbers. Students haven't been rushing back to grab their in-studio spots, and there's no event bookings (this time last year we performed at 40 Diwali events in 14 days). There's a lot of nervousness about public indoor spaces, some students have written off 2020 completely, and others are no longer working in the CBD. We get it. A very wise person @joshinderkaurchaggar said to me recent...ly - "you have to treat this like a new business. Start all over again. You've done it before, you'll do it again." And another wise man @gerardhpigg said "when we first opened, even two students in a class was awesome." Lucky I'm surrounded by so many wise people Today, we celebrate not just our re-opening, but new beginnings. This video was our first ever promo video, shot in late 2016. 10.01.2022 A message from Jaya, our founder: Dear Studio J family, Except for a brief 2 week stint in May, I haven't seen you since March. In all likelihood, reunions will have to wait til later this year, or possibly even next year. We're determined to see this out but the extended lockdown is threatening the viability of our entire dance industry.... Studio J has not received any government support because we're deemed a 'non-employing business' (like most artists, our teachers are all freelancers). This is despite that fact that I continue to pay my teachers, most of whom have been with me since we opened 4 years ago. However, this message isn't about politics or even business. It's about asking for help. If you can support us, please do. Enrol for an online course, buy a tutorial or purchase a gift voucher for yourself or a friend to redeem anytime in 2021. These things have much more than just a financial implication. It motivates us to keep going. It gives hope that people do still want to dance. And that yes, someone genuinely must love what we do.
