24.01.2022 The Energy Efficiency Council released a report yesterday that listed Australia as the least energy efficient out of the top 25 energy-consuming developed countries. Buildings are a huge part of this - around 40% of all energy used and carbon emitted. As a practice we adopt passive environmental strategies wherever possible in our architecture. This includes the orientation of the building, deep overhangs and screens for shading, insulation far beyond the Australian requirements, cross ventilation rather than air conditioning, and rainwater collection and usage for flushing toilets and the garden. Because the most energy efficient approach is not to need it in the first place. #platformhouse

We thought wed share an extract from the interview here: ***** How would you describe your ethos?... Architecture can be very complex it draws on so many facets of our lives; cultural, financial, chronological, and so on. Negotiating these factors is a necessity of any project and it is easy to let these complexities manifest themselves in a design. However, one definition of good design is the finding of elegant solutions to complex problems. We see our approach as searching for this path. We often try to focus on more intangible aspects of the design the quality of light, an emotional response to a space as being the drivers of the architectural experience. When you begin a new project, what do you always set out to achieve? Architecture is in a sense an art form, but one heavily rooted in society and dependent on clients. Were always conscious of our responsibilities in this area, but successful projects rely very much on the relationship between the client and ourselves. We may arrive at an unexpected outcome, it is very much a journey we take with our clients, informed by their personalities. As architects, we have a strong sense of the public realm. The contribution that our architecture can make to the city or society is something we also take very seriously. How do you combine excellent craft and innovation? These two ideas may initially seem antithetical craft is based on knowledge accumulated through experience, and innovation is based on curiosity and experimentation. We are very careful to balance our position in regard to these two forces. Both have potential benefits, but without each other can lead to banality. 15.01.2022 The ideal museum visit. Earlier this year, we were invited by @diller_scofidio_renfro and @woodsbagot to form a team for the new #powerhousemuseum competition for Parramatta. Our proposal focused on the museum as urban catalyst for the rapidly developing city, and as a generator of cultural energy - embracing indigenous values and community dialogue. Thanks to the wonderful team, and congratulations to shortlisted entrants - were very interested to see the final outcome.

15.01.2022 At a recent @brickworksbp event, discussion turned to some of the qualities of brick as a construction material, from its modularity and authenticity to its amazing versatility. Recycled blue-black brick was key to the design of #llewellynhouse for a number of reasons. Recycled bricks require less energy than firing new bricks, and come with a patina of former life that was perfect for the project. The double-brick cavity is exposed internally, giving a raw honesty to the ...construction, and its modularity allows windows reveals and storage nooks to inhabit the depth of these walls, giving weight and body to the building. Donating where we could to aid organisations, sheltering those we know who have been directly affected, the devastating effect this has had on so many lives is painfully clear. What is also clear is the need for a political system that recognises the existential threat that climate change poses, and to take action on it now.... We cannot just take this as the new normal.
