21.01.2022 Tradies Tea Break (aka Cam) this painting has a really special story behind it. Cam was purchased by the Brown family as a yearling and is now 7 years old. From the very beginning, he was Stephen Brown Jnrs favourite horse, just a sweetheart. There are many photos of the two of them together. Last year Stephen had a nasty fall which sadly saw the end of his riding career. He was in a coma for a few weeks, and when he eventually started slowly waking up, the family would... bring photos and videos of Cam to cheer him up. These would be sure to put a smile on his face! He even had a photo of Cam pinned up on his hospital wall (next to the family!) and would ALWAYS ask how he was going. Cam has been Stephens healing horse and now gets many cuddles in the paddock. Tradies Tea Break won two races (from twelve starts), and both times Stephen rode him. One of those wins is pictured here. 04.01.2022 Mick and Jelts Express This is a story of Mick Whittle, a legend of South Australian racing. I had the pleasure of painting this piece for his daughter, as a memory of her late father. Mick had a unbelievable passion for his horses - they came before everything. He considered himself a good horseman before a good trainer but his ability to read his horses was what made him a great trainer. He loved supporting the country tracks by taking his truck load of horses to tracks e...verywhere across the country. Mick trained a winner on every single track in South Australia and won just about every country cup you could win. He loved supporting young apprentices, even I had the pleasure of riding a couple of winners for him at Kangaroo Island. The reference photo for this painting shows a rare occasion he was riding with his son and daughter Scott and Lisa. Rare because he had spent some time in a wheelchair due to a horse falling on him and found it difficult to ride after that. In the words of his daughter Chelsea, he was brilliant and one of a kind. A true horseman that wanted everyone to know that about him. My memories of working with Mick are exactly that. Thank you Chelsea for asking me to paint his portrait.
