Next time you're out have a look at the faces of the people around you, have a look at their body language and see if you can guess what states they are living in. 17.01.2022 FIBRE: ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH? Do you get enough fibre? The odds are pretty good that you dont get the recommended daily amount since only five percent of adul...ts consume adequate dietary fibre. The Institute of Medicine recommends at least 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men every day, but according to a large national health survey, the average adult consumes just 16 grams of fibre daily. This means that most of us are missing out on the health benefits from fibre including support for heart health, digestive health, and weight management. One reason our average daily fibre intake remains so low is that many healthful foods have much less fibre than you might expect. For example, a medium apple (including skin) and an ounce of almonds (approximately 23) only provides about 3 grams, while a slice of whole grain bread typically contains about 2 grams of fibre. Considering these numbers, its easy to see why so many people fall short of getting an adequate amount of fibre every day. If you are ready to add the benefits of more fibre to your diet, these three tips can help you get started. 1. BUILD UP GRADUALLY Any time you make a major change to your diet your body will need some time to adjust and improvements to your diet are no exception. Increasing fibre is best done gradually since a sudden and drastic change is likely to lead to gastrointestinal upset. Consider this: If your daily fibre intake has only been about 16 grams per day, you might need to double your fibre intake to reach a level that is considered adequate. For most people, a sudden doubling of fibre intake is likely to cause uncomfortable digestive upsets such as intestinal gas, cramping, or diarrhea. Instead of shocking your digestive system with a sudden jump in fibre, try a moderate increase of three or four grams per day over the course of several weeks. One approach may be to add one serving of fibre-rich foods (think plant-based food) every day for a week and increase to two servings every day the following week, and so on. We have a range of great tasting supplemental sources of fibre snacks which may be more convenient for you. Please PM me if you would like some further details on those. Your best choice is a slow, gradual increase over time to help your system adapt and avoid any uncomfortable symptoms. 2. BALANCE FIBRE WITH WATER Hydration levels and digestive comfort are closely related since the large intestine plays an important role in maintaining the bodys water balance. On a day when you dont drink as much water as your body needs, the large intestine will compensate by absorbing more water than usual from the materials entering the large intestine. The end result can be excessively hard, dry stools, often leading to constipation. One of the benefits of getting an adequate amount of dietary fibre is to increase both the volume and moisture content of the material in the large intestine. This is beneficial because it supports the bodys ability to efficiently eliminate waste and promote regularity. However, increasing dietary fibre can only support regularity if you are well hydrated, so it is important to balance any increase in dietary fibre with proper hydration. 3. VARIETY IS KEY There are a many different types of dietary fibre and each type has unique benefits. Some types of fibre can dissolve and thicken when mixed with water. This is a property that helps you to feel satisfied for a longer period after a meal. Oats, for example, are a rich source of beta-glucan, a type of fibre that helps keep your appetite in check and can have benefits for heart health. Other types of fibre are called prebiotics and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. One of the most consumed prebiotic fibres is inulin, from the chicory root. You can maximize the benefits for your body by choosing a variety of fibre-rich foods. BENEFITS OF BUMPING UP YOUR FIBRE Almost everyone can benefit from getting more fibre. Fibre-rich foods support both healthy intestinal function and overall health in many ways. Some types of fibre promote regularity, while others have benefits ranging from supporting a healthy heart to encouraging the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria. Because most people have a dietary fibre intake that is far below the recommended level, the smartest strategy is to add fibre gradually rather than jumping straight to the recommended level all at once. By keeping these tips in mind, you can receive maximum benefits from getting the right amount of fibre for your body every day.

16.01.2022 TRANS FATS TO BLAME FOR HALF A MILLION PREMATURE DEATHS GLOBALLY EACH YEAR Every year, around 500,000 people die prematurely from cardiovascular disease thought to be caused by trans fats. Such is the risk associated with man-made trans fats that the World Health Organisation is now calling for all countries to impose a ban on it. Trans fats are a form of unsaturated fat that you can find naturally in particular meat and dairy products. While consuming these products with low... levels of trans fats is not terribly harmful when consumed in moderation, it’s the man-made version with the addition of hydrogen which is the cause for concern. These trans fats are a cheaper alternative to healthier fats, they clog your arteries, and are found in shortenings, margarine, and similar products. They also remain prevalent in foods such as pizza, baking, and deep-fried goods. In 2004, Denmark became the first country to impose a ban on the use of trans fats, before the United States and countries in both North America and Europe followed their lead. However, Australia, South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa are yet to follow suit, even after several years of research shows trans fats put consumers at risk of coronary disease and heart attacks. With coronary disease on the rise, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is now stepping up their game, joining with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation to launch ‘Replace’ a guide to replacing trans fats, phasing it out and banning it entirely by 2023. It is believed that if they can get all countries to ban its use, it could save more than 10 million lives. According to the CEO and president of Resolve to Save Lives, Dr. Tom Frieden, trans fats are a toxic chemical that’s no longer necessary. There’s no reason people around the world should continue to be exposed Given that chronic disease is now becoming a leading killer, ahead of infectious diseases, there’s every reason to begin phasing out this toxic and harmful fat that causes a significant amount of harm. Ban trans fats from your diet. Check labels and ensure they are not present in the products you purchase remember, there are no trans fats in fresh fruit or vegetables so eat more of those!! How to reduce or eliminate your trans fats intake: * Opt for fresh fruit & vegetables, yoghurt, and clean low-fat dairy products * Check ingredient lists for hydrogenated oils / trans fats * Make healthier food choices by removing cakes, biscuits, takeaway foods and pastry from your diet * Use olive oil instead of butter or margarine * Remove skin and fat from meat and chicken * Avoid processed meat such as salami and sausages

15.01.2022 DON'T LET POST-WORKOUT SNACKS SABOTAGE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS Have you ever had a great workout, only to overcompensate and eat more calories than you burned with your post-workout snack? Next time, making your snack choice prior to your workout may help stave off those unwanted calories. We know that eating after a workout allows the body to refuel and recover, but what you eat is just as crucial as when you eat. If your ultimate goal is weight loss, know that your post-work...out food choices can either help or hinder you in pursuit of that goal. What Science Says About Post-Workout Snacking There are some individuals who eat more after exercise, compensating for the fact that they burned calories during their workout. Researchers have concluded that 77 percent of college students show compensatory eating behaviours, defined as an increase in food intake following physical activity or exercise. These eating behaviours are barriers to weight loss, particularly if you’re taking in more calories than were expended during exercise. In a new study, researchers were interested in the timing of food choice and if it had an impact on the healthfulness of the foods consumed after exercise. The study randomly assigned 256 college students to make a post-workout snack choice either prior to or immediately following their workout. Participants could choose from an apple, a brownie, or neither. When given the choice prior to their workout, participants were 33.5 percent more likely to choose the apple. After the workout, participants were 39 percent more likely to choose the brownie. The results led researchers to believe that behaviour modification may be a key factor in achieving weight loss goals through exercise. Since diet choices play such a large role, making food decisions before workouts could weaken the impulse to choose unhealthy snacks. Changing Your Post-Workout Snacks to Maximize Weight Loss Long-term studies have shown that there are those who eat less or make healthier choices after exercise, possibly because they put in the work and want to get the most out of it. Successful weight loss is often accompanied by a decrease in disinhibition and hunger scores and an increase in restraint. If you find yourself struggling with food choices after a workout, try planning your post-workout snack before your workout even begins. Snacks or small meals containing protein will help refuel working muscles and support muscle protein synthesis, while carbohydrates will help replenish glycogen stores. Choosing foods that aid in muscle recovery can help ensure you get back into the gym sooner and stay on track with weight loss goals.

05.01.2022 MEASURE IT! IF you are super-focused and want to consistently achieve body-composition improvements, the DEXA scan is your most accurate method of determining y...our lean muscle mass and body fat percentage. Not only does it provide you with accurate numbers, it also shows a graphic of exactly where the body fat is sitting on your body. The more scans you have, the more you have to compare your progress. I've set my goal for this year to gain 4 to 6kgs of lean muscle and achieve a lower body fat percentage than last year. This scan is my true measure of EXACTLY how much muscle I'm gaining and how my body fat levels are tracking throughout the year. My new strength program for the year commences 1 February. My next scan will be in the next 8 to 12 weeks to check my progress. The other key measuring tool I use is photos. I take these weekly and send them through to my Coach for feedback. We check what is working, make any modifications necessary and keep working. Guess what I don't use when checking my progress....... The scales! I only weigh myself prior to getting the DEXA scan as it is one of the metrics used in the calibration process. Otherwise, they're not important to me. Bottom line.... when you're hungry for something you've never achieved before, you MUST measure your progress consistently! The Soul Society creator Luke McLeod was on Luke Cook's www.cuppaoflife.com during the ...week and he was talking all things about his meditation business and his experience in the Bacherlorette with Sophie Monk. Sounds like my worst nightmare being on a realtiy TV show like that, but Luke said he enjoyed stepping outside his comfort zone to challenge himself. I asked Luke whether he had the opportunity to do any meditation with Sophie. He said no, but he did say it was such a stressful and intense atmosphere around the show that all the guys were completely stressed out and he did some meditation sessions with them Who would have thought!
