17.01.2022 2020 Umpire of the Year - Jessica Lee Preparing for an intake of new umpires each year is always daunting. It was decided that as a club we ask our more experienced umpires to mentor the preliminary umpires in the early stages of the season and work with them on game days to give them the confidence they need. ... SUFNC is forever grateful that Jess took on this mentor role. She worked with 6 new prelim umpires, firstly attending afternoon sessions with them where she could explain the practicalities of umpiring during training sessions of club teams, and then she would follow up with them one on one during Saturday Games. With the limited season, it was always going to be tough ask, but she worked with each new umpire and we had 3 out of 6 progress to the next level. The club ran out of time, otherwise we were on track for the other umpires to move up as well. St George Association were very impressed with our initiative and more importantly, each umpire was so pleased to have Jess as their mentor, so friendly and encouraging. Thank you Jess for being a wonderful role model and our umpire of the year

11.01.2022 Watching Jemma Mi Mi, the only Indigenous player playing at Suncorp level, on the sideline and not get any game time during Indigenous Round was nothing short o...f disappointing and heartbreaking. We are very lucky at Sparks to share the court with 4 Aboriginal sisters Courtney, Daisy ,Beryl and Opens coach Ali. On Wednesday night, we wanted to show our support and solidarity to our sisters in our club, Jemma Mi Mi, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples all over to say that we hear you, we stand with you, we are always beside you, and will always support you. We wanted to make a statement and highlight that there are barriers, lack of pathways and support systems, and inequalities, that are currently being faced by Indigenous netball players in Australia and that it’s not ok. There needs to be a positive change and restructure within Netball Australia and this begins by listening to and understanding Indigenous voices. 06.01.2022 2020 Coaching Encouragement Award - Antonia Naccarella This is awarded to a coach in their early years of coaching who has shown dedication, commitment and passion for their volunteer role. They have worked with the Coaching Coordinator, the team manager and their fellow club coaches to assist and support the club and have also focused on their own development and improvement of skills to improve their performance as a coach.... Antonia has coached for a number of years and this year took on the role on her own. She is highly dedicated and well-planned in her training, and even though some days she was presented with the challenges of dealing with normal 9 year olds she always remained calm and positive. It was always going to be a challenging season with the consolidation of grades as a result of COVID but Antonia turned these challenges into opportunities for the girls to learn and develop. She managed to engage them and keep them interested through the whole season, and even when the scoreline didn’t go their way they still came to the courts every week ready and excited to play thanks to Antonia’s encouragement. SUFNC is super proud of you Antonia
06.01.2022 2020 Coach of the year - Les Rolls This year we experienced lots of new emotions, our coach of the year Les, used 2020 to lead his team through with encouragement and respect. ... In the words of his team, Les is a positive and focused coach who always did his best for the team as a whole. Making sure everyone in the team used their voice during their post game analysis and asking the team what they could work on whilst making it fun along the way. Each training session and game was about making sure the team set goals & challenges and then how to meet them. Allowing each member of the team to develop into different positions with advice on how best to tackle the game. It was very evident to the parents and SUFNC committee that you held a fantastic morale within the team, with the girls arriving early to training, doing prompt warmups before the game as well as playing each week in the spirit of togetherness. It was a wonderful thing to see every girl happy and absolutely trying their best. You led the team to an undefeated premiership and Grand Final win that the girls and their families will never forget. Direct player quote This season introduced me to my favourite team and my favourite coach! SUFNC thanks you Les, congratulations
