25.01.2022 Dear Parents and Carers The first newsletter of the new year has been emailed to you all. I extend to you my very best wishes for a happy and particularly healthy 2021. We are well and truly back in business with the first day milestones, first lessons and first assemblies behind us. Each of these experiences have been an opportunity for us to be welcoming to our new students and teachers. It is always a delight to see the excitement and enthusiasm of the Year 7 students as... they take their first steps of their secondary educational journey. The focus value of the year is Generosity of Spirit, and we are particularly looking at this value in the context of our learning culture. What does generosity of spirit look like as a learning trait? What does it look like as a professional trait in our teachers and leaders of the College? I believe it will enrich our classroom and staffroom culture and continue to provide a point of differentiation between St Vincent's College and other fine schools. Our iconic 'Vinnies spirit' is at its core an expression of generosity of spirit, and as learners, teachers and leaders we are committing this year to generously create and respond to opportunities to learn and grow. We have introduced the philosophy behind this approach to our students and I am very confident that they will embrace and live out this value throughout the year. There is cautious optimism that we will have a year free of most of the restrictions in place to mitigate the impact of COVID. There are, however, some very important protocols still in place: - Mandatory use of face masks while using public transport. - Staying home if unwell. - Testing at first and mildest symptoms. - Very good hand and cough hygiene. I ask that we work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the entire St Vincent's community. I look forward to sharing the year ahead with you. Anne Fry Principal

25.01.2022 Year 10 Philosopher, taking the lead. This week in Ethics and Philosophy Club Mia, from Year 10 took the lead igniting thoughtful discussion throughout the group about the Purpose of Philosophy and the role it plays in our lives. Club members deliberated, questioned, agreed, disagreed and requestioned life all in one lunchtime. Year 11 Physics students construct several series and parallel circuits to verify Kirchoffs laws. These laws describe the movement and changing ener...gy of electrons in circuits. They also use mathematical manipulation of Ohms law to predict the changes in current, voltage and electrical resistance in these different types of circuits. #VinniesGirlsCanDoAnything #EveryLessonEveryDay #HSCSTEMinists #EthicsAndPhilosophy #CircuitsAreFun #MathsAndScienceAreFun

18.01.2022 Congratulations Safiya Jadwat - Top Place Winner in Woollahra Council Short Film Competition! We extended our congratulations to our Year 12 Visual Arts student Safiya Jadwat, who entered the Woollahra Council Youth Photographic Award and Short Film Prize competition this year. Safiyas impressive film was recently awarded Top Prize in the Senior category, for her film submission titled "Beauty in the Destruction". The competition is a high school competition and is both high...ly competitive and prestigious. Safiyas submitted piece is beautifully filmed and is conceptually captivating. The films premise centres around the destruction of the 2019/2020 devastating bushfires and communicates ideas about environmental issues and the effects of climate change on our oceans, landscape and life. Mr Shawn Seet judged the film submissions this year. When announcing Safiya as this years winner he stated in his speech: Safiyas film is beautifully executed, edited and filmed, I found it strongly giving and it really stayed with me Part of Safiyas statement contextualises her ideas about her film: In my work each scene represents an aspect of our beautiful yet damaged landscape. It challenges the audience to focus on the consequences humans have had on the fragility of our environment, where the effect of our actions can have an everlasting impact... 15.01.2022 Today we remember the Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop RSJ. Our first saint but not our last. Mary Mackillop began the Josephites in response to the dreadful need of the poor children of the colony, to an education. She believed education was key to ending the cycle of poverty. We know thats still true. She had great friends who joined her in this uncomfortable, exhausting work. Like our own five Sisters of Charity who started a school and hospital here on this sight, Ma...ry Mackillop is another example of a courageous woman of action. "Let us try to keep God with us by charity of thought, word and act." Saint Mary MacKillop, Pray for us. #CourageousWomenOfAction

15.01.2022 Welcome to the 2021 Academic Year as we celebrate our Value - Spirit of Generosity! 14.01.2022 Term 2 - That's A Wrap! While the start of Term 2 saw us uncertain of the 'new normal' to come, the students and staff of Vinnies have adapted to the changes incredibly well and on this chilly, but blue sky last day of Term 2 we celebrated in true Vinnies style. In the morning students and staff gathered in the Caritas Christi courtyard for our environmental (paper free) Beanie and Blanket Liturgy, dressed up in a variety of PJs, Onesies, coats and of course Beanies and blank...ets for #snugasabuginarugday. On "Snug-as-a-Bug-in-a-Rug" day, we focus our consciousness around environmental issues and reflect on the homeless, who are particularly vulnerable in the winter months. At the end of the Liturgy those present gave up their warm blankets as donations to the homeless and less fortunate of the Wayside Chapel and St Canice's Parish. At recess and lunch our hands and tummies were warmed by hot chocolate and donuts, thanks to the wonderful LRC ladies, Mrs Kenderes, student volunteers and of course, Ken! Sport and Health Captain Domi Mitchell gathered a couple of her fellow Soccer compatriots for a photo to celebrate today's announcement that Australia and New Zealand have been granted the honour of hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023. The girls are so excited for the world stage of their sport to come to home turf in the near future. At the end of Lunch we farewelled Ms Jacqueline Robins who is returning to Wales, Mrs Priscilla Laliotis who is commencing maternity leave, Ms Karen McConnochie who has been replacing Ms Helen Marshall, and Ms Catherine Davis who has covered various classes throughout the semester. We wish each the very best for the next stage of their professional and personal lives. WOW what a Term! We are proud of the resilience and adaptability shown by our Vinnies community throughout this time. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to welcoming you back rested and ready for Term 3. #VinniesSpirit #VinniesSpiritInAction #CourageousWomenOfAction #AsOne FIFAWWC

13.01.2022 It's Flashback Friday! Today we take a look back at the Science activities of Year 11 Biology students from 1991. The students took field trips to Lizard Island Research Station, located at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef, 270 km north of Cairns in Queensland. The students studied the local environment and ecosystem and went snorkelling. That's a pretty impressive field trip! We thought this flashback aligned very well with the focus topic of this years' Science We...ek 'Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans'. Plans for activities this week were limited to Foxford style Tutor quizzes but stay tuned for all the practical Science Week activities next week! #CourageousWomenOfAction #VinniesSpirit #ScienceWeek2020 #DeepBlue

11.01.2022 Today we would be celebrating St Vincents Day. This year we spent the day in our classrooms, in a celebration of learning. In this year of Service of the Poor, its a good opportunity to learn about our patron saint who was renowned for his compassion, humility, and generosity. Vincent de Paul was a French Catholic priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor back in the early 1600s. His parents were farmers, and he loved literature, but his chores at home involved car...ing for the family oxen. To pay for his education at the Seminary, his parents sold the oxen. Initially, it seems that he was keen to spend his time as a priest in leisurely pursuits but seeing and experiencing the hardships of the poor in his hometown changed him. He felt he had to do something. In 1617, Vincent contacted the Daughters of Charity. They introduced him to poor families whom he wanted to help. Vincent brought them food and comfort. He organised the wealthy women of Paris to collect funds for missionary projects. He founded hospitals and gathered relief funds for the victims of war and to ransom 1,200 galley slaves from North Africa. At one stage he was appointed chaplain to the galleys, where he tried to care for galley slaves - the men who rowed ships around the known world. He had a team of priests working with him. They focused on caring for people in smaller towns and villages, where help was scarce. Vincent is surprising for his time, as he focused on the abilities of women to serve the poor, to bring relief and to be women of compassionate action. They were a way to gain the trust of the vulnerable so that he could do real work. In 1628 the great pandemic of the bubonic plague hit Paris. A million French people died between 1628 and 1631. Vincent was at the coal face, risking his own life to bring some comfort to the extraordinary suffering of plague victims. His experiences of hardship taught him to be sensitive to the needs of others. Vincent is the patron of all works of charity. Spirit of Healing, We pray in thanksgiving for our health workers and all those on the frontline in our fight against the 2020 pandemic. We remember especially the doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers at St Vincents Hospital. We give thanks for their generosity, care, energy and desire to use their talents in research and healing, to bring comfort to patients, families and our whole Community. In the name of Jesus, the healer; In the spirit of St Vincent de Paul; May God continue to bless your work. Amen #VinniesSpiritInAction #VinniesSpirit #ServiceOfThePoor

The College Foundation has a Scholarship and Bursary Fund that has always been there when times of drought, recession or personal economic disruption have impacted on College families. It was there before, and it will remain there, ready to assist families who might be blind-sided by calamitous events that they could not foresee. 06.01.2022 Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Venerable Mary Aikenhead, foundress of the Sisters of Charity. From the book Voices of God. A reflection on the legacy of Mother Mary Aikenhead: "When I had the opportunity to walk in Mary Aikenheads footsteps on a pilgrimage to Ireland, I felt a new appreciation of the gift of her faith. I understood for the first time the depth of sacrifice and courage shown by Mary Aikenhead and Alicia Walsh, as well as all of the Sisters of Charity w...ho followed them. They chose a life in the front-line against the ravages of poverty, diseases, starvation, homelessness, desperation and ignorance. Their world was neither safe nor sanitised; instead, it was capricious." Let us pray for each other and be reminded of Marys own words: "We try our best to show our love by our deeds. May our good God direct and strengthen you in all to His greater glory." Lord of new beginnings, Guide us this term as we return to familiar ways and people. Bless our friendships, rekindled. Bless our learning, renewed. Bless our minds, recharged. Bless our hearts redirected to love as Christ loves us. Amen. Venerable Mary Aikenhead, pray for us. St Ignatius, pray for us. St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, pray for us St Vincent de Paul, pray for us. #SVCPottsPoint #SistersOfCharity #MaryAikenheadMinistries #MaryAikenheadEducation #VinniesSpirit #CourageousWomenOfAction

06.01.2022 We Made It Through 2020! Our year literally ended with a "BANG" as we attempted to set a world record for the number of people in a continuous linked chain pulling a 'Christmas cracker'. While not up there with world records held for strength or speed, it did bring festive cheer to our final assembly. A big thank you to all staff and students for their wholehearted participation. We will submit our effort to the Guinness Book of Records with hope that if not a world record, w...e might establish an Australian record! Our end of term assembly was a colourful spectacle with a strong colour palette of yellow/gold. A fundraiser was held yesterday to raise greatly needed funds for research into Ewing's Sarcoma - a rare cancer that affects 0.6/1,000,000 people. Less than one in a million! One of our outstanding Year 10 students, Mika Singh, is that 0.6 in a million, and our support for her yesterday was overwhelming. Well over $1,000 was raised and if you are looking for a great cause to make a donation to in lieu of a Christmas gift for the person who already has everything, please consider this cause. As it is such a rare cancer it gets little of the research money made available by the big pharmaceutical companies as they know there will never be a big demand. 06.01.2022 Catalyst of the Week - Sir David Attenborough. Broadcaster and Natural Historian. "There are some four million different kinds of animals and plants in the world. Four million different solutions to the problems of staying alive.... Through telling the world about extraordinary creatures, showing them in their own habitat, he moved a generation to respect biodiversity, and want to save it. Sir David has the gift of being able to see food as a source of energy, not a pleasure - he is able to eat anything that won’t poison him or bite him back. What have you seen today that was so amazingly beautiful, that it blew your mind? #CatalystForChangeAndJustice #CatalystForChange #CatalystForJustice #VinniesSpirit #VinniesSpiritInAction

"I am so delighted to present to you the highlights of the 2020 HSC results that we received today. We are so very happy that the hard work of our HSC class and their teachers has been richly rewarded by a wonderful set of results. I want to acknowledge that some of the happiest celebrations of the day have not been captured in this publication. Those experiences and celebrations have come from the joy and sense of achievement experienced by students who have exceeded their own expectations in ways not measured by data. It comes from knowing they did their best in a truly challenging year. We are so very proud of all our staff and students. Merry Christmas to all." 01.01.2022 Remembrance Day - 75th Anniversary of the End of WWII. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent across the Western Front. It was the end of World War I. Now, there was the aftermath; broken bodies, broken cities, broken hearts and broken lives to deal with. 'Some wounds can't be seen.' Today’s commemoration was broadcast to students and staff in their classrooms as the Year 11 students gathered on the Garcia lawn to reflect on the sacrifices of... service men and women across the decades. The reason for gathering there was to also unveil a memorial to the Ex-students of our College and their family members who served in the conflicts of World War I, World War 2, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, and later operations in the Gulf, Rwanda, Somalia, Iraq, Timor Leste and Afghanistan, as well as the many other peacekeeping operations. This memorial reminds us of the ideals of peace and justice, that our community is willing to fight for. It was unveiled by Gemma Thompson (Ex-Students Union) and blessed by Sr Anne Taylor rsc. The St Vincent's College Memorial was created from stone work that was salvaged from the conservation of the Mary Aikenhead Building (Victoria Street) in 2020. Built in the 1880s the building and its many Gothic sandstone features would have been visible to the young men and women leaving on troop ships from the Naval Base at Garden Island. As they sailed away towards battle fields in Europe, the Middle East and Asia we hope they took with them consolation from the enduring strength of this cross that stood in a silent testimony of their bravery. We were grateful for the video message sent by Commodore Malcolm Wise, a current Vinnies Dad, who shared his experience of being in the Navy since he was 17 years old; the sacrifices made by service men and women and their families. At 11:11am one minute of silence was observed, followed by The Last Post and The Rouse, played by Year 9 student, Freya McGrath. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them." Lest We Forget.
