23.01.2022 This NAIDOC Week, we've extended the theme "Always Was, Always Will Be" to feature just some of our wonderful staff, who #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander person in their role here at St Vincent's. To start us off, meet Duran, the first Aboriginal Counsellor here at St Vincent's Alcohol & Drug Service. *********... I’m a proud Ngiyampaa man. Ngiyampaa are one of three Tribal groups that are the traditional owners of Lake Mungo, the site where the first human remains in Australia were discovered. I #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal Counsellor based in the Stimulant Treatment Program (STP) and The Gorman Unit Detox at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. I joined St Vincent’s in 2017 in the newly established role in STP and the Gorman Unit. My role is to provide Counselling support for Aboriginal people who are seeking assistance to better manage or overcome their substance use issues. While working at St Vincents I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to co-create an Aboriginal Men's Smart recovery group with the hopes of being able to actively engage the local community to assist more people with their recovery journeys. The thing I enjoy most about my role is the ability to help people. Helping people is my passion and to be able to help people every day is a dream come true".

23.01.2022 We're taking further steps to reduce our carbon footprint and improve our contribution to environmental sustainability with the introduction of hybrid vehicles to our fleet. Steven Carr, Director of Corporate Services has proudly welcomed four new Toyota Corolla Hybrids to the St Vincent’s fleet. "Fuel use is around 50% less and emissions are lower for these hybrid cars than the conventional fleet vehicles. Shorter distance inner city driving that many of our community, mental health nurses and allied health staff do is really the sweet spot for these cars. Staff are really enjoying them and it is better for the environment a triple bottom line win", he said.

22.01.2022 Today we’re celebrating International Pathology Day and acknowledging the role pathology plays in protecting the health, wellbeing and safety of all of us. We're particularly proud of our very own Sydpath Pathology team who work as a connected network across the state, providing specialised pathology expertise and local care to help support all of our communities. They work around the clock in our labs, clinics and offices carrying out clinical and scientific investigations.... They are the people safeguarding and transporting precious samples and delivering the answers that matter so together our healthcare teams can improve and save peoples’ lives. We think they're amazing! #IPD2020 #thepowerofpathology

20.01.2022 We are deeply saddened to share that our dear Sr Sesarina Bau rsc, has passed away. Sr Ses served our health service, both here in Darlinghurst and at St Joseph's in Auburn, from 1970 until her retirement in 2018. She made a deep impression on the lives of so many people, most recently the patients and families that come into our care in ICU where she spent most of her time. Her care, support and love is the stuff of legends. ... She is part of our history, our story and helped shape who we are as an organisation today. She will always be with us. May she rest in peace.

20.01.2022 Thanks to the collective efforts of NSW residents, we're able to relax our restrictions to visiting hours a little. Commencing today, patients are now able to see two visitors between 10am - 12 noon and 5pm - 7pm each day. All patients, students, visitors and staff are still required to present for standard screening and registration processes upon entry to our facilities.... Thank you to all of our community members who have been understanding and respectful of our restrictions to date, knowing that the health and safety of our staff, visitors and the broader community is always our number one priority.

Justin #alwayswasalwayswillbe the first Aboriginal Transport Officer at St Vincent's, here's his story. ***** "I’m a proud Bidjigal/Gadigal man from the La Perouse community. I #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal staff member to work in the Transport Department of St Vincents Public Hospital.... I joined St Vincents in 2015 as a driver, transporting patients to other hospitals, appointments and private homes. This role has given me opportunities to travel all over NSW where I have had the pleasure of getting to know our patients during our travels together. During my time in St Vincent's, I have taken up professional development opportunities available to me to upskill and recently I was asked to take on the role of acting Manager of the Transport Department. The highlights of my role include working in a team that makes me feel welcomed and offers me a sense of belonging. I feel respected and acknowledged as an Aboriginal staff member and that we all respect each other’s cultures and background. I am learning more and more each year and I have made many friends along the way and know that we are all coming together for the one purpose. I have come to respect and appreciate the organisation that I work for, it has given me a job that I have grown into and knowing that they are committed to improving health outcomes and creating employment pathways for my mob".

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Prof Lesley Campbell, who has been announced the 2020 recipient of the Australian Diabetes Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Over the last 12 months, around 990,000 ampoules, and 1.2 million needle caps have been used across our campus. So this month, we were excited to see our first pickup of recycled products. Shout-out to staff member Rodrigo, who has been hard at work coordinating this process over the last few months. We are thrilled to be the first NSW hospital recycling needle-caps and one of a few hospitals in the state recycling ampoules.
