25.01.2022 Mel is a Clinical Nurse Educator in our level 3 theatres, looking after patients on the day that they arrive for surgery. She has an infectious smile, with a deep understanding of the importance of delivering true holistic care. Mel’s beautiful approach to care is summed up here `a helping hand, a kind word and a smile can offer comfort and make a difference in someone’s life’. Mel shares why she choose to become a nurse, what inspires her everyday and the challenges s...he has faced and overcome. Why did you choose to become Nurse? Growing up I have seen and known life to be at times difficult and challenging. I have also discovered that a helping hand, a kind word and a smile can offer comfort and make a difference in someone’s life. I have always been drawn to caring for others and felt that a career in nursing was for me. Nursing is all about the patient/person. I have been turning up to work at SVPHS since 1990 always with a smile and a hope that not only am I making a difference in our patients care but I am also mindful of caring and supporting my colleagues too. What inspires you everyday in your job? I have always been supported and respected by my colleagues and that is why I feel I am able to commit to doing my best every day. I have had the pleasure of working alongside several phenomenal nurses who have inspired me over the years. They have been my mentors and I will forever be grateful to them. What are the challenges you have faced in your time as a nurse and how have you overcome these? I have experienced many challenges in my nursing career although I had never envisaged that I would be nursing during a pandemic and witnessing an unprecedented strain on our health system. Life is different and strange, we are all wearing masks. I am not able to give someone a warm reassuring hug and must social distance to ensure a safe workplace. People are worried and anxious about whether they have Covid-19 and our patients are vulnerable. What I tell myself is that this will pass and we must remain optimistic and know that we will get through this difficult and challenging time. It is important to check in on one another and ask the question; How are you feeling?. It is crucial that we manage our patients care, our own health as well as care for our mental well-being. We must stay strong and be safe.
