08.01.2022 I often feel that the culture towards dogs that growl has changed, and not for the better. When I was younger I was told that if a dog growled at me, it was pr...obably my fault. Had I disturbed them whilst they were eating, tried to play with them whilst they were trying to sleep or even invaded their space by getting into their bed? I was always told that if a dog growled then leave them alone, they are telling you they are not happy. I'm often surprised that many people now believe that a growl needs to be punished. That a dog needs to understand they have done wrong. But is growling wrong? We have language, we are able to tell people when we are feeling uncomfortable, scared, frustrated, we can politely ask people to stop doing something we don't like. We are also not restricted in our movements, we don't wear leads or have doors we cannot open. We can walk away when we need to. Dogs have a language too but the subtleties of their language are often missed by us. Slight head turns, their body getting stiff, flicks of their tongue, showing a little white of their eye, maybe even a yawn or tension around a closed mouth. When these tiny little signals get missed, those polite little requests for space or asking for someone to stop doing something, those gentle reminders that they are in an uncomfortable, scary or overwhelming situation goes unheard. When their first form of communication is unheard they then start to ask in a different tone, one that may be listened to. A growl. If that's punished and their attempts to stop something are ignored they then need to start shouting, this often comes in the form of a snap, a lunge and even a bite. Can you imagine going through your life without ever loosing your temper? Without ever getting annoyed? How often do you get upset with a family member? Another driver? A frustrating cold caller? When you Start to think of it in this way, you Start to realise how tolerant and easy going dogs are. You are much more likely to be shouted at or harmed by another human than a dog. Even dog bites rarely need medical attention. This shows that most bites are just a warning. If a dog wants to cause damage they can. 99.9 % of the time they choose not to. They are just trying to communicate. This is not to say we shouldn't address these issues but to do so, we need to understand how to listen. The first day Toby arrived he lunged and snapped at me. He bit my brother, not badly but it was obviously a shock. Each time he behaved in this way with us, we apologised to him and stepped back. We had obviously done something that he felt uncomfortable or scared enough of to react in this way. He often didn't show the subtle signs, which made us feel that somewhere in his past his subtle signs had been ignored. There we're also issues with pain which make any being react quicker, with lower tolerance. Over time his reaction to things he didn't like lessened. Now he knows that just by licking his lips he can get us to stop doing something or give him space. He now loves affection from us, we get amazing cuddles. This all happened due to us listening to him. We also supported him with his pain issues. Many behaviour clinics will tell you that 80% of the dogs they work with that show these types of behaviours are in discomfort or pain. It can feel very personal when a dog behaves this way towards us but just think of how many times a loved one has snapped at you, got annoyed with you. It doesn't mean they don't love you, they are telling you that something is wrong. Why is our tolerace higher for other humans than it is for dogs? We surely should be the better behaved, with our complex cognitive capabilities? Yet humans become angry a lot more than dogs do. If you are struggling with any of these behaviours reach out to a science based, fear free behaviour practioner for support.
