20.01.2022 Blind cactus (Opuntia rufida) was recently reported and surrendered to biosecurity officers by a resident in Townsville. Blind cactus is illegal to keep, sell,... give away or release into the environment. If allowed to spread, it has the potential to spread over considerable areas of Queensland. The glochids (hair-like short prickles on the pad) of blind cactus may blind cattle and if humans come into contact with the glochids, it can have health impacts.
