01.01.2022 There are subtle and not so subtle things that indicate a person is struggling with their mental health. As a psychologist, we often look out for recent changes like job loss, relationship breakdown, financial trouble, grief, having a baby, changing schools, moving house... With your friends (kids, colleagues, parents...) however you may just notice they are cancelling plans more often, not responding to texts, seeming tired, missing deadlines, or seeming more disconnected or... withdrawn than usual. We may feel hesitant to ask if someone is doing okay- as this insinuates you’ve noticed a change in them. In my experience however, both personal and professional, no one has ever been offended by the question! Asking if someone is okay does not infer judgment- it infers you care enough to perceive subtle changes in their life, you’re brave enough to verbalize it, and you value your friends enough not to run the risk of missing something crucial. I think this message is more important in 2020 than ever before. #ruok #ruokeveryday #mentalhealth #suicideprevention See more
01.01.2022 As we gear up for #ruok day this week- one way to support those around you is to challenge the stigma around help seeking. We see coaches to improve fitness, mentors to progress our careers, and tutors to improve academic performance. Talking to a therapist is just the same- a way to seek improvement and support #stopthestigma #ruokday #mentalhealthmatters #psychologist #therapy
