25.01.2022 I write Business Plans regularly for my Business owner clients. This short video sums up what you need to include. Do you have a Business Plan?

24.01.2022 A Portfolio worklife - part of the future of work

24.01.2022 A Strategic Plan is vital - now more than ever As COVID restrictions end, many businesses need a new strategic approach, even a new business model. A good plan helps define what you do and how you do it, who your clients are and why people should buy from you. So, do YOU need a Business Plan? The only person who doesn’t need a Business Plan is somebody not in business!... After years of helping business people develop workable plans, I believe there are three major sections 1. Company overview: Description of the current reality Snapshot of products and services Mission and Core Values Your overall strategy One-year goals and objectives The second section is marketing: Your current and potential clients An overview of your competitors SWOT analysis Your competitive edge Your marketing approach and a list of marketing activities for the next 12 months The third section is financials including cash flow forecasts, balance sheet and profit and loss. Let me help you write your business plan. Why? I ask heaps of questions so you get clearer I write 10+ plans a year and have done for years I am good at it! You’ll end up with a better, more workable plan. In a nutshell, Business Planning works #strategicplan #busiessplanning

23.01.2022 Great video on the power of mindfulness and meditation - great skill to develop for success in anything

23.01.2022 We are all cognitively biased. If you're not sure what this means, watch this video! Even if you think you don't have any bias - you do!

23.01.2022 The two core benefits of workplace coaching. 1. Raising awareness which is the result of focused mindfulness and clarity. Awareness of what? Raising self-awareness because you can only control or change things that you’re aware of. Plus, awareness of your environment so you know what is happening around you. 2. Coaching is the only job that has as its number one product, getting people to take personal responsibility! Taking responsibility for your thoughts and actions is crucial for high performance. When you take responsibility for your thoughts and actions, your commitment to them rises and so does your performance. This is vastly different to when you are ordered to take responsibility. When you’re told to be responsible, you are not likely to be as committed and if things go wrong, you’re far more likely to blame others.

23.01.2022 The mental war we all battle Whatever the future holds, the biggest battle in any crisis is the mental war we wage internally. It’s not easy to stay positive when there’s so much doom and gloom but if you can think clearly and strategize well, you will make better decisions, identify and make the most of great opportunities along the way. The current COVID 19 crisis has rocked businesses all over the world. All the stories of uncertainty, closed businesses and empty shelves ...have scared people and made them anxious. Worry is a normal, even healthy, response to crisis. However, spending too much time dwelling on the negative is detrimental. It leads to inaction. It leads to hoping things will get better but not doing much! Hope is NOT a strategy. Smart business people know that now is not the time to bury your head in the sand! Instead: Focus on opportunities rather setbacks Focus on what you can control and take small steps forward Define the principles, business model and strategies for the future Develop a strategic plan focused on creating opportunities rather than just surviving If you want help: Staying focused and positive Navigating the unchartered waters you find yourself in Developing a strategic plan including a Plan B None of us can do this alone. I can help. Now is the time to get a Coach. Now is the time to act! #covidanxiety #keepingpositive #focusonwhatyoucancontrol

22.01.2022 The 3 R's we need to live by atm and into the future We are living in a period of high anxiety and turbulence. The world as we knew it is no more. We grew up learning the three ‘R’s’ reading writing arithmetic. There’s a need for a new set of the three ‘R’s responsibility, resilience, resourcefulness! The combination of these is the intelligence that will help us survive and thrive. The First R Responsibility... It’s not what happens to you - it’s what you do about it. Responsibility is often misunderstood. Responsibility is realising that you give meaning to any event. The event doesn’t do anything to you the way you respond is a choice. In other words, situations are neutral. How you view them and how you react is your responsibility. This includes CoVID 19 we’re all responsible for how we react. In the final analysis, there is no one to blame. Situations are neutral. How you view them and how you react is your responsibility. Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you react! The Second R Resilience Life can be difficult. Resilience is your ability to bounce back from hard times and maintain a sense of hopefulness about your future - even in the face of adversity. It means being flexible and trying different approaches to maximise opportunities even after emotionally painful experiences. Everyone gets knocked down. The key to a great life is finding the strength to bounce back. Life can knock you down but it’s up to you if you allow it to knock you out The Third ‘R’ Resourcefulness Your life is the product of your decisions, beliefs, attitudes and actions. To change your results, you need change your decisions, beliefs, attitudes and actions. Resourcefulness means making small improvements every day. The Japanese refer to it as Kaizen constant and never-ending improvement. Being resourceful means taking a systematic and collaborative approach to problem solving. It is developing the ability to use whatever resources you need to resolve the issue at hand. The resourceful person takes a good hard look at themselves and searches for ways they can improve. Being resourceful means making constant small improvements in your business and your life and ensures that you grow stronger and more capable.

22.01.2022 Who knows if the old normal will ever come back. Remember when life was simpler and more certain? It’s up to each of us to create our own new normal. For many of us, the future looks different to what we had in mind just a few months ago. How things have changed! Dealing with unexpected change, not having a clear sense of your future or not feeling in control, all cause stress and tension. It doesn’t have to be like that. Whether you own or manage a business, are an emplo...yee (and perhaps unsure how secure your job is), or you are currently unemployed, as your Coach, I can help you: Maintain positivity and improve confidence Deal with change more effectively Gain clarity of direction and set goals Improve your ability to think and plan strategically Build on strengths and develop weaknesses There’s never been a more important time to invest in yourself. 18.01.2022 Appreciate what you have There’s a lot of focus atm on what’s not working and spreading fear and uncertainty. Instead encourage team members to focus on the positives by getting your people to think about these 4 questions: 1. If you could keep three things in this organisation that gives life to it even as we move in new, challenging and changing times what are those three strengths that you would most want us to keep or build on 2. What is an example of something we di...d in our organisation that became a source of innovation and success for us, rather than simply an added cost 3. What are you grateful for in our company? 4. What is it that our clients and the current social environment are asking us to become 5. What is a small change that could have a big impact in this organisation? Where you place your focus expands so place your focus on some positives instead of constantly ruminating on current challenges. #begrateful #appreciate #whereyouplaceyourfocusexpands

18.01.2022 Is fear the biggest pandemic? Anxiety, fear and uncertainty are strong emotions and natural responses to things that we don’t understand especially if they threaten our safety and health. Covid has produced a lot of fear. This is made worse by the press constantly focusing on new cases, fatality numbers and an uncertain future. There’s an old saying where you place your focus, expands. The more you focus on the uncontrollables the more fear you feel. Focus instead on ...what you can control and the ultimate thing you can control is your attitude. Fear is contagious. It’s spreads like wild fire. Seeing people panic buying makes you want to do the same. Hearing people constantly talk about how scared they are, makes you think you must be scared too Fear is perplexing. It can make you freeze and render you powerless. Or it can motivate you and propel you to act. Fear is misunderstood. We all feel fear on a regular, yet it’s one of the most misunderstood emotions. Fear immobilises. People often freeze when scared which can lead to more fear. The antidote to fear is courage. I predict the fear pandemic will outlast Covid. It’s up to each of us to take responsibility for where we place our focus. Mentally rehearse a positive future and place your focus on it.

What do they really feel about working in your business How engaged are they? How satisfied are they? How motivated are they and what motivates them? What is the culture like (from their perspective)? Do they get enough of the right feedback? In their opinion, what should the company Stop, Start and Continue doing Are staff happy? This and more is covered in the Employee Culture survey we’ve recently revamped. 15.01.2022 3 reasons to use a Coach 1 To brainstorm and generate ideas. The cliche "two heads are better than one" is very true 2 To be accountable. The path to failure is paved with good intentions. A Coach is your accountability partner 3 To assess possibilities and problems and define next steps

12.01.2022 Business isn’t going well. Life's a struggle. I don’t know how I can keep going. This is what a client said to me this week. Here’s 4 things I said to him.... 1 Discipline your inner critic. Would you talk to someone else like you talk to yourself? Probably not! Practice positive self-talk and boost your positive self-regard. As Nelson Mandela said, Our problem is not that we are powerless. But deep down inside we are powerful beyond measure. 2 Practice living by the 3 R’s Responsibility, Resourcefulness and Resilience. Take responsibility for the decisions you make and actions you take (stop blaming others). Resourcefulness means making small improvements every day Understand that everyone experiences dark times. Being Resilient is finding the strength to bounce back. 3 Understand the Law of Sowing and Reaping. It’s simple. If you plant carrots, you reap carrots not zucchinis! When you sow positive thoughts and actions you reap positive results. When you sow negative thoughts and actions you’ll reap negative results. To change results, change your thinking and actions! 4 Develop courage. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to act in the presence of fear. We then worked out a plan for him to implement the above in his life and business. #change

11.01.2022 Successful people recognise there's 2 types of obstacles - internal and external. By far the biggest are internal obstacles. Always remember that success is 80% psychological, 20% skill!

11.01.2022 I am looking for 3 people over 50 who want to or have to relaunch their life. Maybe you’re 50+ and been made redundant and can’t land a job. Maybe you’re recently divorced. 11.01.2022 In business and life we always face two types of obstacles - internal and external. Sometimes you can't do much about external obstacles, but you can always change your internal reality - even if it's not easy!

11.01.2022 I've put in a proposal to write a Business Plan and conduct staff training for a start up micro brewery. Really hoping to get the job because of the market research (i.e. drinking beer!) I'll need to do :) Doing a Business Plan is a great way to assess the viability of an idea before sinking big money into it. It is also an essential tool for an existing Business

11.01.2022 We’ve all heard it before work on your business, not just in your business. The reality is most owners or managers are so pre-occupied with the day-to-day stuff they fail to pay attention to the big picture! The best way to focus on the big picture is to prepare an operational business plan. This gets you out of the daily to-do list and helps you focus on the future and this has never been more important. In my work as a Coach/Consultant I’ve found many managers have tr...ouble with business planning. What’s needed is a business planning process that is simple, clear and effective. One that defines where you are now; clarifies where you want to go and outlines how you’re going to get there. This is where I come in. I can lead you through the process. I will help you be honest about where you are; help you get clear on where you want to go (and this might be different after the year we’ve all had!) and help you clarify the goals and strategies to achieve your goal. I will also help you monitor and review your progress. I have led many clients comment about how much more effective it is having an objective sounding board to help them write their plan. If you’re ready to clarify your big picture, determine your goals and strategies and move more quickly towards success, contact me today.

10.01.2022 Made redundant at 62 I met a woman recently at a country market who was offering to clean your prescription or sunglasses to demonstrate how effective her new product was. At 62 she was made redundant so had to reinvent herself as a business owner! She wears glasses and was always frustrated by how ineffective glass cleaning products were. Her solution? Invent a product that really works and sell it at every opportunity she gets! A 57-year-old client was running an online... business importing exclusive clothing from France. He’d been running this successfully for several years until one day, out of the blue with absolutely no warning, he received an email informing him that he no longer had the Aussie licence to sell the brand. His business ended then and there. He had no choice but to reinvent himself. People can struggle to rebuild their life at any age but when you’re over 50, there’s extra challenges. Whether by choice or by circumstance changing career or in fact, changing your life can feel daunting when you’ve had decades doing one thing and have a strong sense of yourself as I am this sort of person. Of course, it’s also hard for other people to see you doing something else. It’s a baby boomer’s nightmare! It seems just yesterday you were 30 or 40 something and moving upwards and now you’re 50+ and moving out (or being shoved out!). You might be 50+ but it’s not too late to have another career or another life. It’s not too late to start a new business (Colonel Sanders was 65 when he started selling his chicken). It’s not too late to find a new relationship. It’s not too late to make a significant change or change behaviour and habits. I am not saying it’s easy but it’s not too late! The average life expectancy in Australia is around 82. Let’s say you’re 52 now that’s 30 years. That’s a 30 year relationship. 30 years doing things you love to do. 30 years living in a different place. It’s not too late to enjoy many of the things that makes life worth living. It’s not too late to develop new behaviours and habits. People tend to over-estimate what they can do in a short time like 6 months and under-estimate what they can do over a longer period (like 30 years). It is only too late if you don’t start! The BIG question is what are you going to do differently? This where My Relaunch at 50+ Coaching program can help. http://successknowhow.com.au/coaching

10.01.2022 Jack Welch said this about 25 years ago and it's still true today.

10.01.2022 Are you willing to fund your dream? Are you willing to make a huge leap towards your potential? Happiness is what you feel when, every day, you're moving towards your potential - your dream! Whether you need a life plan or Business Plan or both, I can help move towards your dream. Stop waiting! Contact me today for an initial session that costs you nothing.

09.01.2022 I’m sick of the news! Every time I listen to the news I get: More fear and negativity... More of what is NOT working Stats on how terrible things are I’m sick of it! For my own mental health, I have stopped watching, reading or listening to the news. (Keep reading to see what I do instead). I believe where you place your focus expands! The almost total focus on problems and catastrophe is not good for me and it might now be good for you either! It makes you ruminate on what is NOT working and skews your perception. There’s a focus on things that are out of your control and that leads to feeling powerlessness and catastrophic fantasising. Self-care is knowing when to step away from the news. I have developed 7 daily questions that help me focus more on the positive. Try them, they might work for you. 1. What is one of my strengths or talents and how can I use it today? 2. What is one thing I am grateful for? 3. Who do I love? What is something I can do to show that love today? 4. What is one thing I enjoy about my work? 5. What is a problem that I am grateful I don’t have? 6. What’s something kind I can do for someone today? 7. What gets me excited? Can I do that today (or plan to)? # #mindset #focusonthepositive #positivemindset #happiness

09.01.2022 It really is NEVER too late to start again!

09.01.2022 Negative and toxic people bring you down and ruin your (or week or month or year!). Avoid giving them power and be around them as little as possible

09.01.2022 Here's an article on Employee Engagement that I just published on Linkedin

09.01.2022 Usually people focus on the skills and habits you need to develop to become successful but what about the things you need to stop doing or avoid? Worth the 5 minutes it'll take you to read this.

09.01.2022 Great Ted talk on Incivility and how being respectful of others is good for business. Well worth watching!

09.01.2022 Great video explaining how powerful our subconscious programming is in affecting our behaviour and creating the results we have in our life.

09.01.2022 Sometimes business owners ask me if it is really that important to have written vision, mission and values statements. In many companies, it seems to just be a plaque on the wall with little or no value. Here is why I think it is critical that every business (even small businesses) should have a clear, written vision, mission statements. 1 They determine the Company’s direction Smart business owners use these statements to remind their teams why their company exists because t...his is what makes the company successful. 2 They make decision making easier Clear vision, mission and values set important boundaries which enable business owners to delegate both responsibility and authority. Vision, Mission and Values are to the company what a compass is to an explorer, a map to a tourist, a rudder to a ship. 3 They lead to increased effectiveness. When a new employee is hired, it’s critical that the new hire know what the company does and where the company is going. These statements form the basis for alignment not only with the owner, but the entire team and organization. 4 They help productive change happen Many people are resistant to change. However, when the Vision, Mission and Values are clear, team members are more likely to see the value of the change and how it helps the organization accomplish the mission. 5 They help shape strategy. Instead of looking at what’s new or what competitors are doing and trying to copy them, wise business owners create the most effective strategies possible to accomplish the mission their company is set out to accomplish. And specifically your mission statement .. When you have a clear, written statement of mission you will know exactly what to measure and how to measure it. As Robert Haas, Chairman and CEO Levi Strauss said: We’ve learned that the soft stuff and the hard stuff are becoming increasingly intertwined. A company’s values what it stands for, what its people believe in are crucial to its competitive success. Indeed values drive the business.

09.01.2022 I have said many times to Coaching clients that the ideal situation is to do what Steve Jobs says in the below quote - do work that you love to do. Is it always possible? Yes, it's ideal to get paid for doing work you love (like I do) but I have found over 30 years of Coaching a few tens of thousands of people, that sometimes for certain periods in life, you have to do what you have to do to earn a living. The important thing if that is the case, is to make sure you are doing... what you love to do in some aspect of your life and continue to explore ways of getting paid to do it! What do you think?

09.01.2022 Beware your inner critic Would you talk to a friend like you talk to yourself in the privacy of your own mind? Probably not!... While your inner critic can be useful in helping understand things you want to improve, for most people it is far too strong! If your inner monologue repeats, I hate these events, as you walk you into a networking event, you probably won't appear approachable. If you’re thinking, I’m never going to get this job, in an interview, you'll struggle to present yourself in a confident manner. Often, those negative predictions can quickly turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Everyone has an inner critic but don't let it be in charge! How? 1. Give the inner critic a name such as Critical Nancy or my scumbag voice 2. Increase your self-awareness so you can identify when scumbag voice is nagging you 3. Stop ruminating. Critical Nancy loves to go over negative things again and again 4. Treat yourself like a good friend what would you say to a friend experiencing self-doubt? 5. Examine the evidence your inner critic tends to say you’re always like this or that. No one is always anything. 6. Thank your inner critic for sharing and make a choice as to what YOU want to do. 7. Get a coach so you don't self sabotage #beyourbest #innercritic

08.01.2022 Rethink success Years ago, Psychologist Ken Dychtwald asked people to chart the highs and lows of life. They drew a line across the centre. Above the line were periods when they enjoyed; below were times when life didn’t’ measure up. Many had lived vast periods below the line. Eg, Herb, 81, said there were great moments, but overall his life had been disappointing. He hadn’t loved his job. His long marriage was OK but he’d let his true love get away. His life had been w...asted and it was too late to do anything about it. The participants’ peak moments clustered around three types of successrich personal relationships, personal growth, and activities that transcended self-indulgences and made them feel their lives had meaning. NOW is the time to rethink success. Many have become so focused on getting more stuff that they’ve lost sight of what really matters. As Abraham Maslow said, it’s no good climbing the Corporate ladder only to discover it is leaning against someone else’s wall. I suggest we rethink success. Maybe it’s about personal growth, loving relationships, genuine happiness, purpose in work and a contribution to the greater good.

07.01.2022 Leading employees in times of crisis The current situation is the biggest disruption that most people have experienced. As many have said it’s unprecedented. A key aspect is uncertainty. People are anxious and scared and need reassurance. More than ever people need leadership. Without it, they're lost in a maze.... So how do you lead in times like these? Here’s 6 tips. 1. Promote a culture of resilience. The road ahead isn’t clear. Like any crisis, the current situation is an ever changing, developing, dynamic phenomenon. 2. Avoid charged emotional statements. Review information from a variety of reliable medical and economic sources. Deliver your message in a calm manner. 3. Work together with your leadership team (and/or Coach) to develop your business continuity plan. 4. Build community within your company by clearly communicating your plan and listening to feedback and suggestions. Clear communication is key what do you want and what do you expect from your people? 5. Be more flexible than ever. Now is not the time to be stuck in old rules. For instance, working from home and flexible work hours are the new norm at least for now. 6. Regularly check in with people do they need support? 07.01.2022 Yesterday I published my latest newsletter - Can Meditation Help a Business owners anxiety. It is a 3 minute read - might be worth it :) http://successknowhow.com.au/can-meditation-help-a-business

07.01.2022 As you might recall for the past 3 years I have been focused on building my motorcycle airbag business. I have just sold the business! As a result, I am reinvigorating my Coaching and Training business, Success KnowHow, which has basically been dormant during the recent past. My two major areas of Coaching are:... 1. Coaching for Business Owners 2. Executive Coaching Each Coaching assignment is tailored to the client but in a nutshell, it is designed to inspire and equip individuals, teams and organisations to show up more frequently as the best versions of themselves. Typically, I work with Business Owners when they want to: Grow the business Stop being a slave to the business There’s specific issues to deal with or opportunities to maximise Executive Coaching is aimed at leaders - GM’s, Managers or potential leaders who need to: Develop their leadership potential Successfully understand and lead change Develop greater empathy and emotional intelligence to boost their ability to build positive relationships Can I ask a favour do you know someone who either owns a business or that is in a leadership role that I can have a chat to? Location doesn't matter because Coaching can be effectively done on the phone or Skype. As you know, personal recommendation goes a long way and I’d greatly appreciate your help. Thanks.

05.01.2022 It’s February!! How’s the New Year Resolutions Have you achieved what you wanted or maybe you’ve given up? Most people have good intentions but get busy and their motivation fizzles! To achieve your goals, remember how a garden grows... You must first prepare the garden and pull out any weeds. Then cultivate the soil, plant the seeds and water so the seeds can flourish. If you don’t set clear goals that excite you, it’s no better than tossing seeds in an untended garden. But planting the seeds is only the first step - you need to keep a check on the garden to ensure the growing seeds continue to grow. Likewise, setting a clear goal is only the first step. To achieve your goal, you must take consistent action over time, make corrections, be persistent and keep going! And that’s much easier with a Coach by your side. I can help you achieve your goals faster and more smoothly than you can on your own. Remember Coaching can be done via phone or Skype so distance is no problem

05.01.2022 I've said for years that resilience is a key factor in becoming successful. This is worth watching

05.01.2022 Is self discipline the master key to success? We live in a 'microwave-quick-fix-I-want-it-instantly-otherwise-I-will-be-miserable' society. We want things NOW! The truth is that to get anything worthwhile requires self-discipline and that means delaying instant gratification. Ever tried to lose weight? It takes self-discipline. It means putting aside short term gratification (eating the cake) for long term benefit. It also involves sacrifice.... Without self-discipline there'd be: No Olympic Gold medalists No successful business people No great artists No great concert pianists. Anyone who has accomplished anything of any worth has developed self-discipline and made sacrifices Many great (fill in the blank artists, athletes, business people, etc) didn’t start off great. I know myself I didn’t start of as a great Coach and presenter but after 16,000 hours over 30 years in front of tens of thousands of people, most people tell me I’m pretty good! But it’s taken time a lot of work and discipline. Sadly, many people are not willing to the hard yards, get distracted and complain. So, what do you really want? What do you have to sacrifice to get it? To change your life - start now. Give me a call and discover how Coaching can help. #selfdiscipline #coaching

01.01.2022 The old ways of running a workplace -- annual reviews, forced rankings, outdated competencies -- don't get the intended results. Leaders must find new ways of building an exceptional workplace. New ways of getting people engaged. Engaged employees are those that feel connected to their company and work with passion. According to one worldwide study of 90,000 people, only 21% of people were fully engaged with their work. Alarmingly, 40% were disengaged. Companies with low...-level employee engagement had a 33% decline in income. When people feel happy, engaged and purposeful at work they tend to be more productive and positive than those that aren’t. This is where Coaching helps. Coaching is an effective way of increasing engagement. A skilled Coach rarely provides or prescribes solutions. Rather, they provide a fresh mind, an outsider who is not entrenched in the organisation and who can offer a fresh perspective that focuses on future possibilities, not past mistakes. Coaching helps unlock a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. A good Coach recognises that internal obstacles are often more daunting than external ones. No matter what size business you’re in, Coaching can help. If you want to learn how Coaching can help your Company, contact me now.
