12.01.2022 It's Australia's Nile River - life giving, tempestuous, quick to flood and ending in an almighty delta. The Burdekin River is Australia's largest river by disch...arge volume, and that's exactly how it felt as we criss-crossed it numerous times along its 200+ kilometres. That's not how Ludwig Leichhardt and his party encountered it though in May 1845, when they became the first Europeans to explore the its headwaters. He wrote:"we discovered an extensive valley with large lagoons and lakes, and a most luxuriant vegetation, bounded by blue distant ranges, and forming the most picturesque landscape we had yet met with. A chain of lagoons connected by a reedy brook followed the outlines of the table land, along the foot of its steep slopes." Today the area is known as Valley of Lagoons, and it's where the Burdekin rises. A camping reserve (temporally closed) on Reedybrook Station is accessible even by 2WD after travelling 50kms along a gravel road off the Gregory Highway, north of Charters Towers. Fletcher Creek, with a popular free camp by the same name only 40kms north of Charters Towers, runs into the Burdekin. For many travellers these days, this is the closest they see to where the river rises. We next encountered the Burdekin where the Fanning River runs into it, at the Bivouac Junction Holiday Park - a bush camp / station stay blend with amenities where you can camp right on the river. Then east to the 'heart' of this beast at Burdekin Falls Dam, a jaw-dropping engineering feat that holds back four times the amount of water held in Sydney Harbour. Then the river tumbles down towards the coast. If you take the unsealed Ayr-Ravenswood Rd to the Bruce Highway then you'll shadow the Burdekin for the last 25kms of your journey - through cattle country, mangoes and finally sugar cane. At Home Hill another spectacular piece of engineering is evident. At 1,103m, the Burdekin Bridge is one of the longest multi-span structures in Australia, taking 10 years to construct. It's then only another 15 kms further east to Groper Creek. Here the Burdekin performs her last, and possibly most impressive, trick - spreading out into dozens of rivulets to form a delta of national wetland significance. Mangroves, salt marshes and sedge swamps spread for kilometres in each direction, creating one of the richest estuarine environments in Australia. No CPs or major camps in this delta area, and that's a good thing! #greynomadawards #greynomads #ontheroad #regionaltourism #regionalaustralia #seeaustraliafirst #vanlife #camper #motorhoming #caravanning #pubstay #countrypub #farmstay #caravanpark #stationstay #awards #tourism #AOA21 #aussieadventures #exploreaustralia #vanlife #travellingaustralia #seeaustralia
