16.01.2022 To the 18 year old kid I stopped on the highway, You’re welcome. I’d like to believe that you were minutes away from creating an unspeakable Christmas tragedy w...hen I stopped you. If not only killing yourself, you were well on your way to killing some innocent person who was minding their own business doing nothing else wrong but being in front of you. You said you didn’t realise how fast you were going. That’s a lie. You may not realise when you’re doing 60 in a 50 but you are fully aware of every kilometre per hour at 160. You realise it with every bump you hit. You realise it as you pass cars so fast the wind moves your car. You realise it every time you drift over the line and when you move the wheel the car reacts a lot quicker than you’re used to. You absolutely realised it. You were scared when I stopped you. You were visibly shaking and breathing hard. Unfortunately, you were scared one minute too late and for the wrong reason. You should have been scared that you were trying to kill yourself. I know you’re invincible. I know that you can’t even fathom your own death. I can tell you dozens of stories of dead and broken 18 year old bodies that I’ve pulled from cars. Broken bodies that I’ve found in front yards after crashes. Unrecognisable bodies. They thought they were invincible too. They weren’t. They were gone so they missed the part where I had to tell their parents that they were dead. Part of your soul disappears every time you have to tell parents that their kid is dead. I don’t KNOW your parents, but I know them. I know that when you leave every day they say Be careful. Drive safe. Those aren’t just words. That is the very last act of them pleading with you to come home safe. When they get a knock on the door, it’s not Good afternoon ma’am. Your 18 year old son just had a massive heart attack. It’s Can we sit down? Your son has been involved in a very serious crash. I’m so sorry. He’s died. When you leave the house they know that, far and away, the best chance you have of dying that day is in that car. Sometimes you’re the innocent person hit by someone with no regard for anyone else and sometimes you’re the one with no regard for anyone else. Today you were the latter. You seemed like a really nice kid who made a bad decision. I don’t feel bad about this ticket at all. In fact, I’m proud of it. I hope you’re paying it off for months and with every payment you think about how it wasn’t worth it. I hope you slow down. I hope that when your mum tells you to drive safe you make a promise to her, and yourself, that you will. I hope you can envision me sitting in your kitchen telling your screaming mother that you have been killed. Slow down. Please. You are not invincible. I promise.

07.01.2022 Did you know that as a driver, there are certain road rules that apply when driving past a horse rider? Its important to know that you must stop at the side ...of the road and turn off your motor if a horse rider signals that their horse is jumpy or agitated. You must not move the vehicle until the noise of the motor, or the movement of the vehicle, wont aggravate the horse. Profeta, Emergency Room Physician, St. Vincent Hospital of Indianapolis ...It kind of keeps me human. You see, Im about to change their lives; your mom and dad, that is. In about five minutes, they will never be the same, they will never be happy again. Right now, to be honest, youre just a nameless dead body that feels like a wet bag of newspapers that we have been pounding on, sticking IV lines and tubes and needles in, trying desperately to save you. Theres no motion, no life, nothing to tell me you once had dreams or aspirations. I owe it to them to learn just a bit about you before I go in. Because right now . . . all I am is mad at you, for what you did to yourself and what you are about to do to them. I know nothing about you. I owe it to your mom to peek inside of your once-living world. Maybe you were texting instead of watching the road, or you were drunk when you should have Ubered. Perhaps you snorted heroin or Xanax for the first time or a line of coke, tried meth or popped a Vicodin at the campus party and did a couple shots. Maybe you just rode your bike without a helmet or didnt heed your parents warning when they asked you not to hang out with that friend, or to be more cautious when coming to a four-way stop. Maybe you just gave up. Maybe it was just your time, but chances are . . . it wasnt. So I pick up your faded picture of your drivers license and click on my iPhone, flip to Facebook and search your name. Chances are well have one mutual friend somewhere. I know a lot of people. I see you wearing the same necklace and earrings that now sit in a specimen cup on the counter, the same ball cap or jacket that has been split open with trauma scissors and pulled under the backboard, the lining stained with blood. Looks like you were wearing it to the U2 concert. I heard it was great. I see your smile, how it should be, the color of eyes when they are filled with life, your time on the beach, blowing out candles, Christmas at Grandmas; oh you have a Maltese, too. I see that. I see you standing with your mom and dad in front of the sign to your college. Good, Ill know exactly who they are when I walk into the room. It makes it that much easier for me, one less question I need to ask. Youre kind of lucky that you dont have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if shes trying to protect herself from unseen blows. I check your Facebook page before I tell them youre dead because it reminds me that I am talking about a person, someone they love; it quiets the voice in my head that is screaming at you right now shouting: How could you do this to them, to people you are supposed to love! For the love of God, put down your phone, slow down, come to a complete stop, wear your seatbelt, go the speed limit, and drive like your life depends on it. Because it does. And if thats not enough, drive like other peoples lives depend on it...because it does. Dont ruin your familys or our holiday season...
