23.01.2022 What do you feel when standing on the shoreline edge looking out into the horizon? Humans have the innate need for connection with life and lifes processes that stems from our species' immersion in the natural environment for the greater part of our history. In order to survive and thrive, our ancestors needed to be attuned to the local environment and cycles of the natural world. It is not surprising that the presence of water reduces stress, increases feelings of tranquility, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, as water is fundamental to our survival.

19.01.2022 Great news! We have finally received DA Approval for the Tathra Hotel new Performance and Events Space along with Reception and additional guest rooms. It is exciting to be moving forward with this project.

16.01.2022 When buildings need to be made of concrete this is a great idea.

13.01.2022 We have recently received building approval for this new home located in Newport. Ecological design features include capturing all water on site with a beautiful system of dry creek beds, waterfalls, natural ponds, water tanks and green roofs. Landscape Designer @phillip_johnson_landscapes has helped us with this important part of the design philosophy.

13.01.2022 Stage 2 Tathra Hotel Accommodation well under well underway. Thanks for the great photos Nathan and Chris Briggs

11.01.2022 From rainbows to sunflowers-maths and geometry is found everywhere in nature! Lots of inspiration to incorporate into biophilic design solutions!

10.01.2022 Biophilic design is the engagement of sensory variability, based on information richness which is in constant motion reflecting the time of day, month and year. Natures patterns teaches us that each part represents the whole. Complementary contrasts that are dynamic and balanced through hierarchy and scales. When we choose locally place based materials we have a geographical, historical, ecological and cultural connection to our immediate environment. Stimulating a spirit of place that is celebrated and experiential.

06.01.2022 Hemp is the best material on the planet. Fast growing, multifunctional and uses a lot less water than any other crop. People relate better to natural materials, it’s very healing. What is also inspiring with this building is the less is more philosophy- not overdoing it with layers of building materials. https://www.curbed.com//solar-powered-home-zero-carbon-hem

06.01.2022 Our team had a wonderful and inspiring day with Martin Freney learning and building with strawbale at Narara Eco village yesterday. Candy’s house was designed by Martin and the foreman, Sean Bozkenycz was doing a wonderful job (along with community and family support) in constructing this hugely energy efficient 7 star + home. The walls are a combination of rammed earth, earth ship (car tyres and earth), strawbale and cob. The design and materials used not only create and incredibly healthy building but help by significantly reducing landfill. Natural materials (except concrete which can be recycled) go back to the earth- contributing rather than contaminating it.

05.01.2022 View from our office this afternoon. A double rainbow. We are all surprised to learn rainbows are actually circles! So appropriate as geometry is found everywhere in nature... unfortunately it makes it difficult to find the pot of gold!

04.01.2022 Project Spotlight: Batlow Library Tender Submission. Our design aim for the new Batlow Library is to create ‘A central information hub in a park setting that all inclusively connects people to invigorate the town of Batlow’. In particular, we have drawn inspiration for our design by recognising the importance of the Apple to the town of Batlow.... By studying the apple, we are able to apply the principles of biomimicry to resolve our design. The building is able to be infused with this philosophy in space planning, building envelope and services. The symbolism of the apple will enhance the sense of place for the Library and the community. Biomimicry is a process of learning from nature to source, inspire and provide methodology in design. Opportunities in biomimicry come from understanding natures patterns and behaviors in specific climates and accessing what is relevant to the way we live and how can this be applied to engineering, architecture and design. Some design features include: Front desk being positioned at the core of the building in a circular shape. Wall composites to act like the skin of the apple, being water repellant, air tight and incredibly thermally efficient. Like the apple, buildings require regulated heating and cooling hours to perform desirably, a calculated building skin will assist in creating a thermally efficient building. The proposal includes a heat recovery ventilation system that supply’s and extracts air ensuring air circulation in an airtight environment without interfering with temperature losses. These features help to mimic the apples healthy internal environment.

03.01.2022 Tathra Theatre, a hub for creative performance and entertainment, bringing the local community at large together. The Tathra Theatre celebrates a thriving cultural destination and talented community, the intimate "black box" rests in the coastal landscape and will provide a space for community to facilitate creativity in the arts and performance. The proposal is currently undergoing the approval process, we're looking forward to the next steps!
