24.01.2022 The Plank is a popular exercise in Pilates. Holding the plank position strengthens your core and gives your whole body a workout. This exercise tones your arms and legs, especially your shoulders, back, and abdominal muscles. However, you need to pay special attention to your body alignment when planking to prevent injury. You will need to ensure that your abdominal muscles are lifted, your spine is long and your neck is an elongated extension of your spine. Your shoulders sh...ould be relaxed with your scapula (shoulder blades) settled in the back, not popping up. Even though it might look like your legs aren’t doing anything, they are engaged in the movement and should be drawing in toward the mid-line of your body creating one long line from your ankles to your ears. 04.01.2022 The Standing Roll Down is a great exercise that you can practice any time, both to warm-up and cool-down. The rolling motion helps to improve blood circulation, strengthens your abdominal muscles and relieves back tension. The Roll Down creates space between your vertebrae, improves your posture as well as increasing mobility and articulation in your back, spine and neck, thereby restoring balance to your body. If your hamstrings are a bit tight, they will receive a good stre...tch during this exercise, however to receive the greatest benefit, roll down as slowly as possible. Keep your movement fluid and controlled, allowing your muscles to stretch evenly and your abdominal muscles to assist with controlling your movement. If you are feeling stressed, simply roll forward and let the weight of your arms and head relieve any tension, allowing it all to drop away from your body. 04.01.2022 The Half Roll Back exercise not only strengthens your core, but also helps to create healthy movement in your spine. Many core exercises do a great job on your abdominal muscles, however don't help create a healthy spine. This exercise, like many other pilates moves serves a dual purpose in working both abs and back. When you roll back, keeping your movement slow and controlled, your lower abs are pulled in tight. Your spine gets a chance to practice mobility at the same time, as each part of your vertebrae moves separately. Performing the Half Roll Back on a regular basis will give you a stronger core and healthier back. As you can see you can exercise from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection and a phone/tablet/laptop. Join me for tomorrow’s 6pm group class with equipment. We use a yoga mat, stretch band, Swiss ball and Pilates ring (optional).... Alternatively no equipment is needed for the classes on Saturday and Monday. See you online soon!
