22.01.2022 Too often people with disabilities rights and choices are ignored or overlooked. Unsuitable and inappropriate supported accommodation options, such as group homes or aged care facilities are continually forced upon people. Michelle wanted the same rights she had before her stroke but she needed the support of an advocate to protect and defend these rights. #advocacymatters to Michelle ... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aVUFo2QcFVo

22.01.2022 It is now 745 days since the Senate urgently recommended a Royal Commission into the abuse of people with disabilities. On the 4th December the Senate supported a joint motion by Senator Rachel Siewert and Senator Jordon Steele-John calling on the government to reconsider its decision and commit to a Royal Commission.

17.01.2022 Historically peoples needs have been neglected or gone unmet due to systemic failure and shifting of responsibilities between government departments, particular Health and Disability Services. It seems even with the roll out of the NDIS issues still remain.

15.01.2022 Kevin Cocks, Queensland Anti-discrimination Commissioner has "launched a blistering attack on the Palaszczuk Government for running new trains that flout disabi...lity access laws. Commissioner Kevin Cocks has used a submission to the Australian Human Rights Commission to argue against the problematic new trains being used on the rail network. The Commission is looking at an application by the Government seeking a temporary exemption to laws setting out disability access standards for public transport. It argues the trains are urgently needed to meet the Commonwealth Games deadline. But Mr Cocks has sternly rebuked the Government for rolling out trains under the $4.4 billion program before fixing design flaws including aisles too narrow and toilets too small for passengers with disabilities to access. There are also ongoing concerns about boarding problems for disabled commuters. That the Queensland Government would in 2013 commission a fleet of trains that do not fully comply with the transport standards, and in other respects are likely to discriminate against people with disabilities, is reprehensible, Mr Cocks said in his submission to the Commission." Submissions to the Australian Human Rights Commission DDA exemption application can be accessed here: http://www.humanrights.gov.au//exemption-applications-unde Image description: A photo of a train pulling into a train station. The train has the destination "Roma Street" illuminated on the front. There are yellow tactile indicators along the platform.

14.01.2022 People with psychosocial disabilities are having significant difficulty accessing the NDIS. Latest figures show just 6.4% of NDIS participants have a primary psychosocial disability, less than half the expected number.

13.01.2022 #advocacymatters "Disability advocacy is so important because people with disabilities are some of the most marginalised people across the world. They need a voice."

10.01.2022 2017 was a dismal year for human rights in Australia, according to a report card which found the country significantly lagged behind in areas including disability rights, Indigenous rights and the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum. Australia rated poorly in the area of disability rights with a grade of D, with segregated education, substitute decision making and continued use of restraint and seclusion noted as particular areas of concerns.

Many thanks to Di. Please listen to this wonderful podcast and reflect on the many contributions of Di Toohey. https://www.sufy.org.au/sufy-news/di-podcast

08.01.2022 "We must now recognise that disability is not created as a result of various medical impairments but is in fact created by societys collective failure to adapt to and embrace and celebrate the varying levels of ability which we all have". Senator Jordon Steele-John in his maiden speech.

07.01.2022 #advocacymatters #standbyme The future of independent advocacy in state and territories remains uncertain placing vulnerable people at significant risk. Advocacy under the new NDIS regime is crucial because these independent voices act as intermediaries for disabled people yet the NDIS itself was never intended to fund such services. About $40 million in advocacy funding across states and territories will disappear by 2020.

07.01.2022 SUFY strongly supports the call for a Royal Commission into the abuse and neglect of people with a disability who reside in specialist Disability Accommodation. A Royal Commission will investigate and expose the incidents of abuse and neglect experienced by people with a disability along with the shameful system responses that have failed to respond appropriately to this ongoing violence. #disabilityabuse #advocacymatters... www.theguardian.com//disabled-mans-death-due-to-service-pr

07.01.2022 People with disabilities are often forced to live in group situations that are not appropriate. Lachlan like all other Queenslanders wanted to choose where he lived and who he lived with. He needed the support of an advocate to be heard. #AdvocacyMatters to Lachlan. www.youtube.com/watch?v=79WWz1ORbR4

01.01.2022 The NDIS will commence rolling out in the Brisbane region in the coming months. Many people have already received correspondence from the NDIA letting them know someone will be contacting them soon. You may now be asking yourself am I ready? How do I get prepared? What information do I need? As SUFY finds resources and information we think may be useful we will share them with you. If there is particular information you would like please let us know and we will endeavour to find it and share it. Below is some useful information on how you can spend your core support funds.
