25.01.2022 Nala donates her blood to save Sammi the 4 week old pup! Poor little Sammi a 4 week old Staffy pup came into our hospital this week after her owners noticed she was very flat and lost interest in feeding from her mum. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with a horrible Hookworm infestation which was making her extremely sick and anaemic. ... Sammi's only hope was to receive a blood transfusion ASAP! Thankfully Nurse Katie's brave dog Nala came to the rescue and donated her blood to help save little Sammi's life. Dr Marianne stayed behind to monitor little Sammi over a painstaking 5 hour period on Tuesday night to ensure she did not have a reaction to the transfusion. Thankfully it all went perfectly, and by the next morning little Sammi was gobbling down her meals and ready to go back home to her mum and fur siblings.

24.01.2022 Our team go above and beyond for every animal, even our wildlife brought in with injuries. This poor Galah was brought in by a member of the community when it was found with an injured wing. It was x-rayed and found to have a broken wing! Dr Marianne decided to operate to ensure the bird had a chance at survival and being placed back in the wild.... During the delicate surgery, Dr Marianne placed an intramedullary pin in the fractured bone within the right wing, which holds the fractured bone together so it can heal correctly, meaning the galah should be able to once again fly. For the next few weeks the bird will stay with a wildlife carer to monitor the fracture and ensure it heals correctly, before it is released again. Great work Dr Marianne, the wildlife of Bundy are thankful for your dedication

24.01.2022 It’s all about getting in and having a go this Motivational Monday!!

22.01.2022 SNAKE WARNING - BUNDABERG We can't stress enough how important it is currently to be vigilant when it comes to snakes and your fur babies! We have seen so many cases over the past few weeks, and today we sadly lost a beloved clients pet who was found with an Eastern Brown snake near by. ... Signs to look out for in your pet: - Paralysis - Lethargy - Pale Gums - Active Bleeding - Drooling - Shaking or Twitching - Vomiting - Dilated Pupils - Loss of Bladder Control What to do if you suspect your pet has been bitten: - Pick your pet up and get them in the car ASAP - Call us on your way in so we can prepare necessary anti-venom testing - Do not try to identify the type of snake or approach it, we have testing for this - Even if your pet appears fine, bring them in for testing as some snake bites can cause an increase in activity and make you think your pet is fine, but time is vital in survival rates and it is not worth the risk! How to keep your pet safe from snakes: - Keep your yard clean and tidy - Keep grass mowed and short - Dispose of grass clippings immediately - Avoid walking your pet in long grassy areas or bushland - Keep shrubbery to a minimum in your yard Please help us get this important information out into our community by SHARING our post, so we can try and keep the fur babies of Bundaberg safe!

18.01.2022 The face of regret... Franklin the Border Collie pup got into his mums toothpaste of all things last night, she noticed he had strangely minty breath and realised what he had done! Unfortunately for Franklin, toothpaste contains Xylitol, an artificial sweetener which is extremely toxic to dogs!!... He came in to see our afterhours vet Dr Marianne who induced vomiting to remove the toothpaste from Frankie's system to ensure it could not make him ill. He was certainly feeling sorry for himself and second guessing his life choices, but at least he got cuddles from one of his favourite vets! If your dog gets into toothpaste, ice creams, chewing gum or other artificially sweetened products that contain Xylitol please contact us immediately as these can prove deadly to your pet.

18.01.2022 It's not everyday our vets get to operate on a pet that's older than they are! Dr Marianne recently met our friend Basil the Galah who unfortunately had a rather large growth that needed to be removed. Basil is a 30 year old bird, and his owners have had him for his whole life, so they were very nervous for his big surgery.... Thankfully for everyone, the surgery went perfectly and Basil has since recovered and has a new lease on life with his large lump removed. He was a pleasure to have as a patient and we look forward to caring for him!

13.01.2022 We hate to brag... but we do have the cutest patients in the whole world

12.01.2022 Zeus the 8 year old jungle python came to visit Dr Mike today after his family noticed he had gone off his food and more recently had developed some skin growth over his eyes! Zeus was a gentle boy while Dr Mike examined him and removed some of the crusty dry skin from around his eyes, as well treating a small abscess that was found in his mouth. Dr Mike started him on a course of antibiotics and an appetite stimulant as well as instructing his family to give him regular warm... baths to help his skin shed! We will see him again next week to check in and hopefully after the medications and regular baths Zeus will be feeling like his old self!

04.01.2022 Warning: graphic images below! Slaty the Slaty-headed Parakeet had a nasty altercation with one of her feathered siblings, resulting in a pretty gruesome situation where her lower beak had been ripped from her face and left hanging. Dr Marianne operated on Slaty, removing the lower part of the beak that was mostly detached, cleaning the wound and giving her some supportive care such as antibiotics, pain relief and fluid therapy. ... Most people are unaware, but birds beaks can actually grow back, much like a fingernail would. Due to the severity of Slatys wound though it is not likely her lower beak will regrow. Thankfully she should be able to carry on and live a fairly normal life, even without the lower half of her beak! She has gone home to her loving family with some ongoing medication to help her heal and we will see her again soon for her progress exam where she should be feeling much better.

02.01.2022 Does anyone know what this little critter could be ?? Dr Abby discovered this little parasite during a routine health check and vaccination on a pair of kitty cats yesterday. She found some ear dirt and took a swab to look at under the microscope which is where she discovered... EAR MITES!... These gross little parasites live in your pets ears and also other skin surfaces and crawl around *shutters* breeding and multiplying and leading to nasty infections and serious damage. Although it looks large under the microscope, these mites are actually about the size of a pinhead fully grown, so almost impossible to see to the naked eye. Signs of ear mites in your pet include: - Inflammation of the outter ear - Holding their ears flat against their head - Scratching at their ears - Shaking their head - A dark, goey discharge in their ears or a foul smell If your pet shows any of these signs, please bring them in so we can take an ear swab and rule out ear mites!

01.01.2022 The faces of regret... Poor Matilda and Cadbury are our THIRD case of Rat Bait Ingestion this week alone!! Their owner put rat bait out last night only to discover this morning that it was gone!! ... Some cheeky dog had ingested it all and we had no way of knowing if it was Matilda, Cadbury or both of them... so we had to induce vomiting and start them on a three week course of the antidote. We will monitor them closely and perform some blood tests in a few weeks time to ensure their are no long-term effects of the toxic ingestion. Most of the time symptoms of rat bait poisoning are hard to notice until serious damage is done, which is why we encourage you to bring your pet in ASAP if you even suspect they have ingested rat bait. With recent ingestions, we can induce immediate vomiting and decontaminate the stomach avoiding a need for ongoing treatment and greatly improving survival rates. Symptoms of rat bait poisoning to look out for include: - bleeding - weakness - low temperature - pale gums - bloody urine and/or stool If your pet has ingested rat bait and its already been absorbed, we will then need to begin a longer treatment with the antidote and depending on the severity, hospitalisation can be required. It's important to place rat baits in areas your pet cannot get to, and be mindful that if the bait successfully kills the rat, it still poses a risk to your pet if they then ingest the toxic dead rat themselves! Always air on the side of caution with any suspected toxic ingestions and call us for advice on 4151 3550. It could save your furry families life!

01.01.2022 The face you make when Dr Abby tells you that you need more eye ointment Big girl Daisy (weighing in at an impressive 85kgs!!) has an irritated lump on her eye lid that's been giving her some grief. Due to the presence of inflammatory cells in the lump we are going to try some medicated anti inflammatory eye ointment in hopes we can avoid surgery!... Daisy isn't a fan of the ointment but she is such a good girl we know she wont make life too difficult for her paw-rents while they give it to her. Wish her luck...
