21.01.2022 Hello all Today I just wanted to talk a bit about water changes. For many of us the idea of keeping fish is so exciting BUT the general maintenance, particularly water changes aren't very exciting at all, and is often left to the point of detriment for the tanks inhabitants.... In my experience this can often down to a lack of really understanding why we need to do maintenance to keep our watery friends happy and healthy. Check out the link below to find out why we need to do water changes and why they're so important. https://m.liveaquaria.com/article/181/?aid=181
19.01.2022 Hey all, Just a heads up there seems to be an issue with Facebook at the moment and my page isn't coming up in searches, hopefully that will be rectified soon. Also the website is still under construction, so bear with me it should be up and running properly soon
15.01.2022 Happy New Year all :) I'd like to introduce you to two new members of my watery family. Yesterday I picked up this dynamic duo (false percula clownfish & Royal dottyback)from a lovely guy 20 mins away. He had advertised his tank and fish which he's bought for his daughter who had now lost interest. Being who I am I wanted to make sure these little guys had the best opportunity to live a long and healthy life, and not end up in the same situation again, so I decided to take th...em on. After having a chat with the seller, I was really happy to see that he had done everything he could to keep his fish alive and well, but concerened that so much of the advice he was given by the business who sold the setup and fish to him was very vauge and misleading, thankfully though not to the detriment of the fish in this case. The seller also noted that the fish were really shy, and after asking a few more questions found that lots of fingers had been poking and tapping on the glass (which is crazy stressful for fish). After transporting everything home, cleaning out the filter media (which was absolutely full of decaying food) setting up the correct lighting, I tested the water parameters to make sure the water chemistry was ok or manageable at the very least for the fish (which to my joy it was bang on!), and then offered some food, which they took heartily. The next stage for the guys will be an upgrade into a bigger tank, with the addition of a clean up crew (to deal with leftover food particles and waste) and a more natural aqauscape with plenty of places to hide and feel safe. I will be updating the page as we go along so don’t forget to like and follow, and if you’re thinking about starting your own saltwater aquarium, I strongly recommend booking in a consultation to make sure you have all the information you need before you start for a flourishing and happy aquarium, and to save yourself anguish, stress and ALOT $$$ on trial and error (BEFORE AND AFTER PICS IN COMMENTS BELOW)

07.01.2022 ***Essential Basics #1 : The Nitrogen Cycle*** (What is it? How does it work? Why do we need it?) ... WHAT IS IT? The Nitrogen cycle is where nitrogenous compounds are continually breaking down to form ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Ammonia and Nitrite are very toxic to fish and are the killers in an uncycled tank. Nitrates are the least toxic of the three but having it is high levels is also never a good idea. HOW DOES IT WORK? The nitrogen cycle works by using special beneficial bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) to break down ammonia into nitrite then into nitrate which is removed via plants and/or regular weekly water changes, making the aquarium water suitable for fish and other living organisms to live. WHY DOES MY TANK NEED TO CYCLE? To be put plainly, your tank needs to be cycled in order to create and establish enough of the beneficial bacteria to breakdown the metabolic waste (fish poop, food etc.) from your intended aquarium inhabitants, and breakdown the toxic ammonia and nitrites as quickly as they are produced. (I have included a diagram to make it more clear) So now that we have an understanding of the cycle and why we need it, you may ask, "well how long does this take?". Typically for your tank to complete a cycle will be anywhere from 6-8 weeks (not a few days!) , which gives it enough time to build up the beneficial bacteria colonies. If you don’t give the aquarium this time then any fish you do put in will almost certainly die after having suffered terribly in toxic ammonia laden water. HOW DOES IT START? you can start the nitrogen cycle very easily. Once you've setup and filled your aquarium, just add a small amount of fish food to the water and let it breakdown, this will provide the first amount of ammonia, then add a bottle of bacteria (I recommend Dr. Tim's "One and Only") and the cycle will begin. In order to track the cycling process (an ongoing maintenance) you must have a good water testing kit. I reccomend API Master Freshwater Test Kit for freshwater, or the Salifert tests (will have to buy individually) or Red Sea Marine Care kit for saltwater. Test your water every few days checking your pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. Once your ammonia and nitrite are 0ppm (parts per million) but your nitrates are between 2-5ppm then you're ready to go! If you're a first time aquarist, or have been out of the hobby a while and don't want to waste time on trial and error, contact me today to book a consultation and get you on the path of success!
03.01.2022 I had the privilege of working with a new client this past week who was distraught that she had already lost fish, and was worried she would lose all of them. After having a consultation , it was clear that she was given either no or very little advice/help from the local fish store where she bought her fish and aquarium from. Her fish were suffering from ammonia burn (which you can see is particularly bad in the Betta, having very inflammed gills) not eating, and deteriorat...ing rapidly. Thankfully it was easily remedied with a treatment plan, and a few pieces of essential equipment, particularly a water testing kit (which no aquarist should be without). This not only saved the lives of her fish, but also much much more in $$$ and emotional trauma. Her fish are now happy healthy, and eating like pigs If you're new to aqautics or struggling with some issues with your fish/invertebrates or plants (freshwater & saltwater), don't waste time with trial and error, contact me today to book a consultation, and I can help you achieve a healthy flourishing aquarium.
