22.01.2022 With all this wet weather we are seeing hoof abscesses every day! What is a HOOF ABSCESS?... It is an infection in the sensitive tissue of the hoof, which develops into a pocket of pus within the hoof capsule. Whilst the amount of pus is often quite small, the pressure build-up that it causes within the hoof capsule is extremely painful. Signs: Severe lameness Hoof wall may feel hot to touch. Generalised swelling at the pastern/fetlock Treatment: The aim is to locate the area of the abscess and open it up to drain. Poultice - the hoof should be poulticed to encourage thorough drainage through the hole. The poultice should be changed daily until it stops draining. Soaking the foot in an iodine/ betadine and Epsom salt bucket for 10-15 minutes should be done between poultice changes. Anti-inflammatories such as bute or meloxicam to reduce pain and inflammation. Antibiotics are not required for every case of hoof abscess. Tetanus coverage. Unfortunately not all hoof abscesses are straight forward and some can lead to some serious secondary complications or some may be stemming from a more serious underlying issue. Often xrays are the next diagnostic step if we are concerned about a more serious issue.
