14.01.2022 Sun Engineering successfully fabricated four bridge sections weighing an average of 70 tons per unit for a project being delivered on the Gold Coast. The video below shows 1 of the 4 sections that are being manufactured at our Brisbane facility being rotated in order to facilitate fabrication and welding. A uniquely designed component was engineered to ensure the bridge sections did not get over stressed and pass its center of gravity whilst rotating. With 45 years’ experience in fabrication and installation within Australia and the Pacific it was satisfying to be able to complete a bridge fabricated in steel, that was cost effective to Queensland Main Roads and Gold Coast City Council requirements
11.01.2022 Last week the Government of PNG made some legislative Changes to the Mining and The Oil and Gas acts. It is my view that these changes, no doubt without intent...ion, put the future opportunities available to PNG citizens and ultimately living standards at risk . The PNG people and the Government benefits on the proceeds from the resource wealth that it has in the ground. It is not only the direct income, but the indirect income from payroll taxes and the employment opportunities the industry directly creates as well as the multiplier effect on the economy providing work to contracting and supply businesses, many of them local to PNG. PNG relies heavily on Investors to Invest in high risk exploration to find resources and to develop them . The changes to the act mean that after investing and being successful in finding a commercial resource, the Minister at a whim can refuse to grant a development license. It does not take much to see that these changes will have a dramatic and negative impact on exploration investment in PNG. We all understand that the Government wants a bigger share of the resource pie, but change needs to be worked carefully. The industry has accepted the need for terms that give a 50:50 or better profit split for the Government and negotiations should be moving to lock in such terms. Pushing things too far will however result in 50% of nothing! In fact it is worse than nothing, as the lost opportunity for employment and economic growth should also be considered if projects fail to get the go-ahead. As a SME in PNG both Sun and its employees need an economy to create jobs so we can employ people and so we can all pay taxes which helps PNG. We need the PNG Government to be making better decisions that will excite the economy, create jobs in PNG for PNG citizens and improve the standard of living in PNG for its people. The legislative changes made last week I believe will be a serious setback to investment in exploration and development of resources in PNG. The Government with the "Taking back PNG" slogan needs to make sure they are taking back something that is of value to its people, as it is strong economies that improves standards of living.
