22.01.2022 The title says it all!! Paradise Dam is "probably stable"..... PLEASE READ AND SHARE THIS SUMMARY from Bundaberg Fruit & Vegetable Growers:- Several of the worl...ds top experts in major water storage and dam projects presented evidence to the Commission of Inquiry into Paradise Dam on Tuesday. Global geotechnical expert, Dr Paul Rizzo, compacted concrete engineering specialist, Steve Tatro, and international authority on RCC dams, Dr Ernest Schrader, all questioned the validity of the testing processes on which Sunwater based its assessment of the stability of Paradise Dam. Steve Tatro questioned the shear testing process and said that multiple testing of the same core sample over a lengthy period and subsequent limited testing led him to question the assumptions behind the report stating the dams stability was at risk. Dr Rizzo said he also had strong concerns regarding using the core samples as a means for testing cohesion of the dam layers and for coming to the conclusion that the dam had stability issues. Dr Ernest Schrader said the results of the tests Sunwater relied on were "suspect". He said no dam of similar construction in the world had shown such low levels and "proper testing is needed" to draw such a conclusion. Dr Schrader said he had not seen the testing, but from photos he had viewed, the testing appeared to have been performed on core samples that had been taken apart and put back together. He said "it doesnt make sense". "You cant put much reliance" on some of the previous testing data included in the overall assessment of the dams status. Dr Schrader agreed the cores tested showed faults but said "thats not whats in the dam". Agreeing, Dr Rizzo said the existing data obtained by Sunwater over the past decade or so was "inadequate, misleading and insufficient to assess the integrity and safety of Paradise Dam." All three concluded their evidence saying more testing was required on the Paradise Dam to make a real evaluation of its stability with Dr Schrader saying "in my knowledge (the dam is) almost certainly stable". #saveparadise #paradisefeedsyou #farmjobsmatter

09.01.2022 The price of Paradise Paradise Dam is within weeks of being dismantled with the spill way being reduced by 5 meters and the dams capacity permanently reduce...d to 42% of its original design. Adept Economics have today released their report into the cost of inaction on Paradise Dam with an estimated $2.4 billion loss over the next 30 years. https://www.bundabergnow.com//2-4-billion-cost-to-economy/ While this figure is in itself staggering, it is also quite conservative with estimates as high as $8.4 billion being reported in the same report in lost production. It also doesnt factor in the loss of future opportunity and business confidence. The loss of 100,000 ML of water storage doesnt just hurt farmers. It affects the entire agriculture value chain and local community from agricultural service businesses to local retail shops, pubs, clubs and cafes. Taking away $1 of agricultural production can see $10 lost in the local community and economy it supports and which supports it. Bundaberg has a $4.3 billion economy heavily reliant on irrigated agriculture. The ag industry provides $1.1 billion in output and $400 million in direct industry value. Bundaberg now grows 25% of Australias produce growing a range of crops from macadamias and avocadoes to sweet potatoes, tomatoes, zucchinis, water melon, sugar cane, strawberries and citrus. Since the construction of Paradise Dam in 2005 there has been over $1 billion of private investment into the Bundaberg region not including the increased value of land. This investment has been in establishing high value tree crops, building state of the art packing sheds, investment in increased water efficiency projects, soil conservation and water storage systems. All of this investment would not have happened without the water security of Paradise Dam. There has been much noise made by the State Government that the 100,000ML that was released from Paradise was unallocated water. Its true that only 24,000ML out of the 124,000ML of medium priority and 2,850 ML of the 20,000ML high priority was purchased outright. But this is not an example of the lack of demand or value of the water but because of a number of economic and geographic factors. Firstly, Bundaberg receives a lot of rain. In the 12 years since Paradise was built 8 of those years have been above average and 2010 was the wettest on record. This is what makes Bundaberg such a great place to grow food - it is naturally irrigated from the sky. However, the availability of irrigation water to provide security during dry periods builds both industry and investment confidence. Secondly, the initial water pricing set by Sunwater (owned by the State Government) was too high and more focused on a return on investment than looking at the overall economic benefit to the economy. Thirdly, the temporary transfer market is very strong and reliable. Why buy a permenant allocation you may not use for $500 per ML when you can buy one for $30ML in a dry year when you need it. Fourthly, the water security based on the surplus water in Paradise has seen a massive conversion of lower yield crops like sugar to high yield tree crops like avocados and madacamias. Cane has a gross margin of around $1200 per hectare. Sweet potatoes and tomatoes range from around $2000 to $3000 per hectare. Macadamias punch out at around $6,900 per hectare. Avocados have been reported as high as $40,000 per hectare. The majority of tree crops take up to 7 years before their first yield and have heavy upfront establishment costs. The main water requirements arent until trees are fully mature. With the tap being turned off at Paradise, many of these high value projects will be left high and dry. The sad reality is that around 70 % of water users in the Paradise catchment use less than 500ML of water per year. These are your mum and dad, multi generational farmers not your large corporates with the big cheque books. With the reduced water availability will come a jump in the price of water - pushing many family farms further to the wall. For a region that was booming off the back of affordable and reliable water, everything has ground to a halt in anticipation of what the final fate of Paradise will be. It is reported that the costs to fix the dam could range from $50 million to $300 million. This is small fry compared to the cost blow out for the Cross River Rail which has gone from an original budget of $5.4 billion to $13 billion. Frustratingly, there is also $5 billion sitting in the Federal Northern Infrastructure fund which remains untouched because we have a State Government more interested in tearing down dams and regional communities than building new ones. The price of Paradise will ultimately be paid by the people of Bundaberg but the true cost and loss will be felt right across Queensland and Australia.

07.01.2022 Recently Sunfams Managing Director Ian Loeskow together with Lore Saupp-Saunders from Bayer Cropscience presented St Lukes Bundaberg with a cheque for $1000 as sponsorship for their Annual Ladies Afternoon Tea to help raise funds for breast cancer charities.

01.01.2022 "IF THEY STOPWE STOP" Local Irrigation Company Fears for Future Bundaberg region irrigation supply company, Sunfam, have stated the uncertaint...y about the future of Paradise Dam is having a direct impact on their business. We employ more than 50 local people said Sunfam Managing Director, Ian Loeskow and our business relies heavily on the farming industries in the Bundaberg region. In particular, orchards of Avocado & Macadamia trees which last up to 50 years and use highly efficient irrigation systems, are in jeopardy". "Weve already noticed some hesitation in planning future plantings of macadamias locally Mr Loeskow said which has a direct impact on our business because we supply & install the irrigation equipment for new plantings. According to Mr Loeskow, growers in other industries such as sugarcane have been postponing orders of new low-pressure irrigation equipment because of the uncertainty about the future of Paradise Dam. When it comes down to it, our livelihood is intricately linked with the futures of local farmers Mr Loeskow said if they stop, we stop
